Any competent leadership could have seen this coming 20 years ago. Yet, continuously the incompetent BoT put President after President in charge of the University who were nothing more than overpaid resume building jumpers who needed to fund their vacation yachts.

Yup. It would require anyone who works at Akron to give a damn, and not just see the institution as a resume builder for something else. Unfortunately all the people who gave a damn were cut probably a decade ago when Scarborough was here.

Does it actually benefit the alumni and general community around Akron? I wouldn't trust any financial analysis that said it did further than I could wipe my own ass with it. The only ones it truly benefits is administrators to pad their resumes, and people with coaching/sports-fitness degrees because it keeps a lot of them employed. If it comes down to cutting teachers/professors or cutting coaches/sport-fitness folks ... the choice should be pretty clar.

That would certainly be welcomed news, but 16 years too late. Football should have been de-emphasized when you had a dilapidating stadium.

Which is political decisions that should be solved through competent state legislation. Essentially the State institutions were thrown bootstraps and a Laissez-faire, Ayn Rand free market competition, instead of coherent planning strategy by competent management who gives a damn about it.

But it's important to point out the bad decisions that created it, the decision making process that made it, the philosophy that made it, and call it out. It's important to make sure to properly assign the blame or why it exists as bad as it does and not shitf the blame to things that didn't cause it.

No, it's an institution of Higher Learning, not a Business. And treating educational institutions as if they are businesses is what has led to their decline. I mean, we can equate athletics to this. The amount of debt accepted by the U to expand athletics when you couldn't ever actually be competitive in it (football) is one of the biggest blunders in the history of the University. But it's fine, we'll just continually cut the people who do the real work of the University (educating students) and balancing the budgets on their backs, so administrators can make absurd salaries padding their resumes so they can move onto something more lucrative somewhere else and fund their yachts. It's sick, and the fact that you can even attempt to defend it is sick.

Jesus we've already gone over this ad nauseum at this point. Akron Football COSTS the most amount of money, so all of it's revenue offsets its own cost AT BEST. No, Akron Football DOES NOT fund everything else. Student Fees does. You could cut the Football Program tomorrow, lose the money games, and be better off financially. This is just a stone-cold fact.

I mean it is obviously true, because despite having talent to compete with peers you still can't put it all together. That therefore makes it "sorry".

Just scrap the Football program all together. Why even bother wasting the money anymore.

Because it's Ohio State? That's like comparing apples and granite. It's not even close to comparable. And any incompetent BoT is going to be dismissed instantly. OSU alumni wouldn't stand for the level of incompetence seen by Akron's BoT. That's a good question...but I bet that's also somehow magically the AAUP's fault.

That doesn't mean they should get a free pass. Their incompetence (bred from their status of being politically appointed by equally incompetent clowns) is really why UA is in the state it's in. They're the ones who have greenlit every leadership decision, project, program, initiative and major hire at UA. And people want to blame the professors...it's unbelievably stupid.

Who said anything about elected Trustees? Have them nominated, vetted and approved by people of the University Community; not political hack appointments.
