  1. Dillard is 6'5". Why would you not consider him to be a big receiver?
  2. Anyone know if this actually started? The first round was supposed to be complete in January. I did notice in the head coaches bracket they didn't have enough head coaches and filled the bracket out with a few others so Can't State Coach Rob Senderoff takes on Antonio Gates in the first round. That's nice, at least Can't State will get to the second round of one tournament his year.
  3. I know this has been mentioned buried in some other threads, but I really thought it deserved its own thread, especially after his production over the last couple of games (his knee was obviously an issue and his 3 pt percentage over the last two games is 70%). He actually sits at 1,077 career points so it did happen a number of games ago, so I went and dug into his career stats to discover something pretty important about him. He was THE man at UMBC (he sort of had to be since they weren't very good), but he was used to playing double the minutes and getting double the points, rebounds, etc. so more minutes from him I am sure would up his production. He had to know, however, coming into Dambrot's system that it wasn't a star system, so obviously winning means a whole lot more to him than individual stats. I feel the same way about Brian Walsh. As much as I want the team to reach the NCAA's I really want it for these two unselfish players for whom it is their last shot. Go Zips!
  4. Caught this on the Bobkitten's board: Ohio 5-0 Akron 5-0 WMU 3-2 (losses to Ohio, Akron) Toledo 2-3 (losses to Ohio, Akron, WMU) NIU 2-3 (losses to Ohio, Akron, WMU) Can't 2-3 Miami 2-3 BGSU 2-3 CMU 2-3 EMU 2-3 Buffalo 2-3 Ball St 1-4 Too bad Ball State didn't beat WMU, would have been fun to have the rest of the conference all be 2-3. I don't think NIU is any good, but it is interesting that the other teams in the MAC may cannibalize each other. It might not be East domination again because even though the East is 10-4 against the West, Akron and OU have 7 of those victories, so the rest of the East is 3-4 against the West. I could see a final standing looking something like: Akron 14-2 OU 14-2 WMU 11-5 Can't 10-6 Toledo 8-8 CMU 7-9 EMU 7-9 BGSU 6-10 Miami 6-10 Buffalo 5-11 NIU 4-12 Ball St 4-12
  5. Anyone who doesn't think Melo is a D-1 player should go review the Penn State game, but both he and Kretzer are freshman, we've almost gotten spoiled with who can step in and play right away as freshman but think of how inconsistent Tree was just a year ago, it'll come for both of them. But we need to win a championship THIS year so a little less playing time for both is probably not bad with the way the upperclassman are playing. Walsh at the point is an intriguing idea, wasn't that how McNees ended up at the point, he was shooting guard but we had a desperate need for a point and he more than filled the bill even though it was not his natural position. Hey, he's on the bench, are we sure he's used all of his eligibility?
  6. If there is one West team I'd have rather drawn at home, it is Toledo. They have nothing to lose.
  7. I can see the logic in it, but if the MAC wants to encourage better OOC schedules maybe RPI or Kenpom rankings could be the final tiebreaker instead of a coin flip since everything else would be even. Since you are trying to pick the best team maybe use that since it takes into account both record and SOS. The in conference games will come out to be almost exactly even so that might be a small way to encourage better scheduling.
  8. I'm hoping even more that DP got out.
  9. My understanding is they will be accounted for in the tiebreaker evaluation (like in the case I stated above) but will not be included in the seeding which means for this year, the #5 seed will get a bye into the second round against the winner of #8 and #9. Wherever Toledo would fall, everyone else will just move up one seed line.
  10. This is from the Mens Basketball Championship page that was updated Feb 2012, so assuming they use the same procedures this year the tie is first resolved head to head and then by going down the standings with the next highest rated team so for example say Akron and Ohio finish 14-2 with one loss againt each other and Akron loses to Toledo and OU to Can't. If Can't Finishes third at 11-5 and Toledo fourth at 10-6 Akron would get the higher seed based on the better record against the higher finisher (Akron 2-0 against Can't with OU being 1-1). If Akron and OU both finished 15-1 with the loss against each other it would come down to a coin flip for the tournament seeding but I suspect they would just issue a co-championship for the regular season. Long way to go before we start worrying about that. Men’s Basketball Tie-Breaker & Tournament Seeding Procedures TIE-BREAKER PROCEDURE A. Head-to-head competition B. Division Record (10 games) (For the purpose of determining the Divisional Champion ONLY) C. Winning percentage* vs. ranked conference teams (top to bottom, regardless of division, vs. common opponents regardless of the number of times played) D. Coin flip *Winning percentage is used instead of record because of situations where teams do not play each other the same number of times. Therefore, a team that is 1-0 (1.000) would win the tiebreaker over a team that is 1-1 (.500). For multiple team ties: 1. Total won-lost record of games played among the tied teams 2. Two-team tie-breaker procedure goes into effect (refer to A). NOTE: Once a three-team tie has been reduced to two teams, the two-team tiebreaker will go into effect. TOURNAMENT SEEDING – MEN Seeding for the men’s tournament will be based on overall conference record. Teams will be seeding 1 through 12. Teams seeded 1 and 2, shall earn preliminary (first and second round) and quarterfinal round byes and advance to the semi-final round; teams seeded 3 and 4, shall earn first and second round byes and advance to the quarterfinal round. Teams seeded 5-12 will participate in the first round games on their respective campuses.
  11. Probably a humblebrag since he now leads the MAC Pic'em, nice job. There is an Akron fan nicknamed Microwave330 who started one game set late and is a perfect 18-0.
  12. Zeke 17 points and 11 rebounds (8 offensive) and 4 blocks (all time leader in the MAC now), Treadwell 15 points and 17! rebounds (7 offensive) and welcome back Chauncey Gilliam (I know he had about 1 minuteagainst Ball State) with a nice 11 point game.
  13. Not thre greatest game I've ever seen the Zips play but have to give them credit for gutting out a tough comeback win. 9 straight wins.
  14. That ought to be a flagrant foul on Holt dragging Zeke down! Edit: Oh, and it was.
  15. I bet the St Joes- Penn fans are bitching that this game is going long.
  16. Why the hell was Kretzer in and shooting threes? I think his three percentage is at about 10% over the last month.
  17. How many of us were going NOOOOO when Kretzer took the three? Whew! Back in the lead!
  18. Abreu just having a miserable game but Treadwell is playing out of his mind. Two straight great offensive plays finishing with a nice dunk. Zips back to within 4.
  19. Abreu 0-6, team 1-7 on FT and 1-10 on threes and giving up a ton of offensive rebounds. Not too hard to see being down 10 at the half. Can't went on a 16-2 run to end the half.
  20. I think some of you may have missed my point, I only brought up basketball because we were discussing it (football is even more of a money drain), my original point was that university sports seem to be cited as a draw and as quality of life factor for students. It's completely subjective to how those things affect student life but what is not is how much is taken out of student fees to support those activities when again it might serve 5% of the student population for millions of dollars, whereas club activities serve a much smaller segment of the population for a miniscule amount. All sports drain the budget, some much more than others. My comment was aimed at all collegiate athletic activities, wondering what the real ROI is for the students who are all "investors" in those activities. That was what I meant about re-evaluation.
  21. One of the little discussed by-products of all of the conference movement is the demise of the WAC in football. This was their last season and here was a pretty good article on their final season. Lots of references to the MAC.
  22. Absolutely true - now compare their budgets.
  23. And the other way to look at this is that the cost of college sports is often cited to be worth it for the "quality of life" for the students. If the size of the student population being served is only 5% or so even at some of the biggest basketball schools in the country, maybe that should be re-examined too.
  24. Well I think Charlie was playing on those teams.
  25. First I want to commend you on the correct way to pick a nickname for an out of state Zip. And VCU does have a bit more talent, I think partially fueled by the final four run that makes potential recruits think "VCU?" Oh, yeah. Plus they have a coach with a great pedigree.
