Nope. I like the type of student-athlete the MAC typically attracts. If I really liked the "Oden/Durant-type" I wouldn't spend the time I do on this board supporting the Zips. Would the Zips staff take an "Oden/Durant-type?" I don't see that question ever being a realistic one. It will never happen at UA. If they want to recruit that type of player, then they'll prove it one day by leaving Akron and moving on to one of the NCAA/NBA developmental schools/programs. It would be a lot easier (to root for a "machine")...that's for sure. But it isn't what I personally prefer.Well Cap, I don't know if you are giving a BS answer to cover up the hippocrasy or if you are being honest. However, knowing what I know of you I will assume you are being honest. I don't know how many Zips fans will admittedly agree with you, but that doesn't matter.I don't believe getting 1-2 players of that caliber turns you into a "machine". However, the money and exposure would be nice.I will admit, I admire your integrity. You are a better person than I am.

Personally, although you seem to know me better than myself, I would not have taken Oden. The one, one-and-done situation I liked was Larry Hughes. He could have jumped straight to the NBA, but he wanted to stay at home for a year and play in front of his family. And to help the Bilikins' program. That was classy.Say LeBron James wanted to help KD out, and wanted to play basketball in his home town with his high school friends for a year. I would have accepted that. Helping out a mentor from his youth, helping out his hometown program, turning down the NBA to do so (like Hughes, he had the option of turning pro or going to college)...that would have been borderline "noble." To me this is different than the OSU/Oden relationship, where Oden was specifically recruited from out-of-state to be a "student" for 1/2 a year. Getting into a recruiting war over 1-and-done players is a crime. It has nothing to do with collegiate athletics and all to do with money.OSU made millions of dollars from Oden and all it cost them was two quarters worth of out-of-state tuition scholarship money. It was a great business decision. But Oden was a sham student athlete. Given the choice...give me the Cedrick Middleton's of the world any day of the week.So Captain, let me get this straight. Being the great big Zips fan that you are, you wouldn't want to take Oden and that "millions of dollars" he could generate for the UA program for 1 year. You don't want a "sham" of a student that is only there to make the program money. I wonder if our AD and coaches would agree with you.In a nutshell, that is what you just implied. Please tell me I am misinterpreting your explanation. I know you are pretty good with words and will find a way to get out of that, but that is what you implied.Too bad we can't get a show of hands from posters here. I think the majority, except gmann and skip and a few others would say, "YES, GIVE US A BIG NAME PLAYER THAT WILL ONLY BE HERE FOR A YEAR, BUT WILL PUT US ON THE MAP AND EARN MILLIONS OF DOLLARS FOR OUR UNIVERSITY"I would vote yes to that every day of the week. I guess I am just crazy that way.

They do need the money. If they are going to recruit kids like Ted Ginn J., who are closer to being retarded than normal, then they need $52,000 a year tutors to help them.Yet amazingly, he qualified to play. Something most of JD's recruits can't say. The tutoring starts after they qualify, not before....I know, I know, they pay someone to take the tests for them so they qualify, Does it make some of you feel better about UA by bashing others? I really don't get it.

Absolutely true. This is Business 101 people. Teams that make all the money get to spend more money....The teams that are on national TV every week with huge audiences watching them and sell out 100,000 seat stadiums every week have just a tad bit more money to spend than teams that even the locals don't watch and can't put more than 15,000 butts in the seats consistently.I agree, it isn't fair and it makes an uneven playing field. However, college sports is a business. That is how business works. As for Oden, that is ridiculous. You guys would have taken him for 1 year and you know it. Don't even try to deny it.There will be much more of this 1 year crap knowing that the straight to the NBA from high school option is no longer available.

Skip-Zip, I do believe that Toledo sometimes comes up as a potential target for Conference USA. I'm not sure how serious this ever gets, but I've seen it on more than one occasion. The "market size" and "growth potential" reasons the Big East added Cincy and USF are the same reasons why the MAC added Buffalo over some football programs that were obviously farther along at the time of this expansion. We may be getting pretty close to witnessing the wisdom of this move very soon. 'eguins will be shaking on his iceberg over that Sorry, but I disagree that OSU and UM affect UA getting attention.Ohio is a large state. There is room for multiple large programs.Michigan State still draws huge in Michigan. There is Pitt and Penn State in PennsylvaniaIndiana has Multiple big programsIllinois has multiple big program.I won't mention Texas, Florida and California because they are bigger states. If Akron became a "CONSTANT" winner, they would draw. Look at how many people drove to the MCB. There were more Akron fans there than at home games. People will go see a winner. This same old 500 or below and losing to teams UA should beat, won't draw what is needed. We have a large base to work with. Akron just needs to win "CONSISTENTLY" and everything else will fall into place.

The 3-3-5 is like any other defense in football. If you have the talent to play it you can be very good at it. If you don't have the talent, it will look like crap. The 3-3-5 depends on the d-line neutralizing the o-line so the linebackers can make more plays. Just like the 3-4Unfortunately we don't have an overly strong, not to mention deep, d-line. Therefore, our linebackers can't do their job. Also the linebackers we do have aren't very fast. Next year having Bain and Sewell back along with Pendleton and some of these freshman a little more experienced, the defense should look better. Of course, all but 1 guy in the secondary will be gone so that will hurt. The problem Akron has with the 3-3-5 is the same problem the Browns have with the 3-4. That is the d-line.The Browns don't have any quality d-lineman. Their NT is 145 years old and the rest of the guys were low picks or undrafted.IF Akron can get some quality d-lineman along with some quicker lb's, the 3-3-5 will work.

Right on.When I first visited this site there was about 4 posters.

A stat I heard this weekend was that 56% of the picks in the NFL draft's first two rounds this year were less than "3-stars" out of high school. Take it for what it's worth.I wouldn't doubt that at all. Stars mean nothing. Look at the offers a kid has. If he has offers from all of the big major schools, he is probably a player.Their are countless players that were unheralded that were #1 draft picks.Part of being a great coach is finding the diamonds in the rough.I could give you quite a few examples of 1 school, but I would get bashed for it so I won't bother.

If the Zips have another losing season, should JD be fired?
Buckzip replied to InTheZone's topic in Akron Zips Football
No, Let him at least work through hi contract before making that decision. -
Thanks, I appreciate it.

Way back in October of 2006. What was NCSU record last year????Just because a team is in a BCS conference doesn't make them a good team...
-
Same as Mark Jackson last year. Once they get the grades and the big schools will take them Akron is forgotten.
-
How is Bardo looking? Has he improved his offense? Also, what about Darryl Roberts?
-
Love the loyalties these guys show.
-
Lee, chill out dude.....Such is the life of a mid-major..

I think having a week off to rest up and get healthy, combined with working on some weaknesses is the best thing going. The Can't starters had a bye week last week so maybe they are refreshed and that is the reason they are favorites.

I would agree with your last paragraph, although I don't think I'm ready, as of now, to call for JD's head. HE is the head coach, and as such needs to hire the right people to lead this team. The 3rd and 2 that we didn't make was one BIG coaching mistake. When a couple of half-drunk 40 somethings sitting a few rows below the coaches box can see what the opposing coaches are doing and our coaches in the box can't, something's wrong. We ran right up the gut into a blitz. Why? Because we were trying to run the clock out. Temple knew that and played their defense accordingly. But our coaches obviously were either too stubborn or too smug to change.I never called for JD's or any other coaches head. I said things need to change. That could mean players, philosophy or any number of things. I personally don't feel a coaching change will help. We need stability in this program. There have been quite a few highly regarded coaches that started out having ot rough and then righted the ship.I just thought that be year 4 we would be farther along than we are....

Point proven, Thank you, See part of your problem, and you certainly have a problem, is that you can't tell the difference between people being critical fans and people giving up and not being fans. Those of us that are upset are fans that care. The people that have the problem are the people that are gone because the team is playing poorly. Guess what, even fans of winning teams complain about the team. It's part of sports. You attack because you have no other way to express yourself. If you read my posts, you will see I never called out any coach. I never mentioned Moorheads name. I said Brookhart is responsible. Am I wrong?????????????????????????You are a disgrace to this board and to Zip fans....You are a complete and utter tool. You should go take a football 101 class, because you don't get it..MAC football. Give me a break. This is college football. We are young on the o-line. So are many other teams too.is Akron the only school that graduates players?Sorry to hurt your feelings Mrs. Brookhart.Big10 wannabe. (LOL). You show your jealousy all the time. Throw out the OSU card, because that is all you have. Once again having to bring them up. I certainly never mentioned them.Since you are so obsessed with OSU maybe you should start cheering them on. Like I said what a tool.....................................Go away little man. You are a complete and utter disgrace.................................I am through stooping to your level. You are a waste of my time and of cyberspace...Good day Mrs Brookhart.Reply all you want and call me all the names you want. After all, I know that is all you have. You have no facts, and you can't discuss anything logically. All you do is attack. This board was so much better before you jumped on the bandwagon.I am finished with you..... Cry, cry, cry...................
-
That's about the response I would expect from you.Making excuses. The king of excuses calling someone else an excuse maker. What a tool.....
-
Almost beat is the greatest excuse in the history of sports. We lost to so and so who almost beat so and so who almost beat so and so, etc.... :mad_flame:Not calling for JD's head. However, this has gone on long enough. Things need to change. He is the coach. He recruits the players, he hires the coaches, he is the HEAD COACH. Everything falls on him. This is his team and his staff. Being close to a win isn't a win.
-
Bingo.....If you don't think this team is great, you are a Buttmonkey. If people don't want to discuss the bad along with the good, then stay away. You are too big of a homer. When the team starts going 9-3, 8-4 and beating teams they should beat on a regular basis, then you can get upset when fans come out of the woodwork to complain. However, to get upset with fans because they are they are sick of the same old BS year after year is crazy.Upsets happen. However, this is ridiculous. We lose games every year that we should win. When have we beaten anyone that we were large underdogs to? I think Marshall was the last time....Pretty sad. IMHO

Actually some of us donate quite a bit to our Alma Mater. However, when writing that check it seems difficult at times writing the check knowing that there are people on a web site calling you out and saying you are no fan.Refusing to admit that most of what you have said for the past 3 years is true. Instead they just want to wear blinders and ignore everything.Ah, nice excuse. Except that anyone who donates doesn't care what the opinion of someone they don't know happens to be.That's about the response I expected. However, you are wrong. Let's see I donate to a school, however, the people fromt hat school say I am no fan and call me names.Right, I am sure noone would care.

If he is class of 09, he is only a junior. We will have to wait.

You guys are a joke. You hype and hype a guy and then when he doesn't commit, all of a sudden he is "not that good anyways". Good luck at MSU, Johnny. Way to take advantage of the exposure of playing in a BCS Conference.Since when are people skills required to play football?? Actually Mrs. Adams. It's not that he isn't any good. it's that he isn't as good as he thinks he is. Actually he is a good football player.
