  1. Heard through the grapevine that the team had a scrimmage this morning for the juniors and all their parents. Anybody get a chance to go and can tell us how the team looked?
  2. Inside info is hearing it from somebody within the University. Not from some other fan who heard it from someone else who heard it from someone else. There's a big difference between giving inside info and spreading rumors. This was spreading a rumor.
  3. Those of you who are paying to watch the game, let the rest of us know who are listening to a crappy radio signal whats going on and what it looks like. This is the place to discuss the game. LET'S GO ZIPS!!!!
  4. Are you f*cking kidding me? First off, Mount Union is D3, not 1-AA. Any D3 school would get absolutely ass raped by any D1, 1-AA, or D2 school. If Akron played Mount Union, first of all, it would be unsafe for the Mount Union players because it's an entirely different kind of player and skill level. Secondly, it'd be 56-0 or worse by halftime. 1-AA schools can sometimes compete with a 1-A school. But Mount Union would not come close to Ashland, much less Akron.
  5. According to CFN.com, Akron ranks 36th in the nation when combining football and men's basketball power. To me, considering those are the only two sports that really matter, that means we now have the 36th best athletic program in the nation. Not bad considering where we've come from...not bad at all.http://www.collegefootballnews.com/2006/Co...ops_Helmets.htm
  6. Being that the four senior o lineman are Donaldson, Wills, Alleman, and Crouch, and that Wills and Donaldson live for football, and Alleman and Crouch want to play at the next level, I really can't see any of those guys even considering quitting. Where in the world did you hear that??
  7. It's Dana Chambers from YSU. I know I jumped the gun on the LB's coach, but Mark Criner really was the man before Minnesota came in a took him out from under us.
  8. Look for news soon about our 4th opponent. Here's a little hint for the zips nation only.... don't get too excited
  9. Athletes who don't put any effort into their grades in high school with coaches, counselors, and mommy and daddy holding their hands sure as heck aren't going to do it in college when they're on their own and hundreds of girls are trying to get in their jocks. If we're going to take chances on props, we should do it on the guys who have the grades but not the test scores, and certainly not the other way around.
  10. Word is right now he's stuggling with his weight and mobility. Sitting out a year from football did not help. If Dan Bailey and the strength staff can get him to drop about 40 lbs (he's about 360 right now) and gain some strength he could be one heck of a pickup.
  11. A word on the D-line:Robinson is a transfer, not a prop, and will be participating in spring practice.Out of everyone else, Kevin Garner is the only one still in school and "with" the team. Terry failed out, Marshall is gone, Hight is gone. Nate Robinson will be a huge addition but we are not going to have the deep D-line we thought we would. These are the dangers of bringing in Props. Garner always had the grades, he just couldn't get the test scores, so he wasn't really a risk. The other three should've never been brought in in the first place.
  12. Just to clear something up that 80 year old man you saw in the stands isn't just some fan or booster they gave a ring. That's Jim Jones, a man who has devoted his life to Zips football and basketball academics and who keeps the players eligible through countless hours of tutoring. He's been like a father to a lot of Zips players and is probably more responsible for this championship than some of the coaches because he's the reason a lot of these guys are even able to stay in school. I think if anyone deserves a ring it's him.
  13. What Kadar said.
  14. The football team will also be presented with their MAC Championship rings at halftime of this game. That'll be a nice kick in the teeth for the Can't fans who manage to get in .
  15. If you ever come across any of those crazy Memphis fans again online or in person, ask them if they have that same piss attitude when it comes to their in state giant Tennessee. I can tell you this: they don't. I talked to a few of them at the bars in Detroit and was surprised to learn that they steal kids from Tennessee and the other surrounding SEC schools all the time. That showed on the field in Detroit. They are the same size school as Akron and deal with the exact same problems, yet they are doing it. Especially with our new facilities, campus looking great, and a new stadium on the way, we can steal recruits from OSU. But as long as kids know even the fans of the program think small time, they aren't going to come here. We as fans need to start expecting a lot more because we now have the potential to be a lot more.
  16. Oh my dear God. PLEASE SOMEBODY GO POST THAT ON BBS!!It's one thing for a coach to say that you want your program to have the success of another program. This....this....I'm speechless. HOW F'N PATHETIC DEAN..er....Martin...or yea....whatever your name is.
  17. I actually took a couple of buddies and went. It was great. Montana didn't talk about blood pressure hardly at all LOL, it was basically a recap of his career from his perspective talking about such things as his time in high school, his experiences at Notre Dame, his thoughts on Charlie Weis, Bill Walsh, some funny stories about a few of his teammates like Dwight Clark and Jerry Rice, some Super Bowl stories, and his thoughts on Charlie Frye, who was in attendance and introduced him. He then took questions from the audience which was great. Kudos to whoever brought him to the University.
  18. Well obviously it didn't give them much exposure because neither I nor about 99.9 percent of anybody else had a damn clue about any of those teams. I can tell you who the national powers in hockey and wrestling are though. And our softball and volleyball teams have thousands of fans??? I've been to softball games. I was there with a few parents. I have walked through the jar during a volleyball match. There were maybe 10 people in the stands. Give me a break . And I'm not the one that brought up cutting those sports either. You were. I just say don't add any other useless sports to appease that pos Title IX which has been amended. And also, not saying this to be offensive, but rifle is not a sport. It's a skill, but definately does not take "athletic" talent. Riflers are not athletes. Any competition in which men and women can compete is not an "athletic" competition. Genetics can tell you that. Rifle should be dropped from the athletic department and the budget and get funding from another department of the school. Also, there is absolutely no reason why anyone on the rifle team should have a scholarship. What a waste of school money!!! first things first...hockey and wrestling? i couldn't name the top 10 in either. my point is that each sport has its own following and fan base. there are thousands of people that follow softball and volleyball, know who's the favorite to win the next ncaa championship, who made the olympic team etc. i wasn't saying specifically that akron's teams have thousands of fans, i'm saying that just because you don't follow a sport doesn't mean others don't too. you can't group everyone together just for that reason. now for the second topic...well you're wrong. if you want more information on why shooting is a sport look in some of the other rifle threads. rifle informationthere's plenty of information there, and if you don't want to look at it that's fine too. if you ever want to come down to one of our practices to see exactly what we do, you're more than welcome to. i'll even let you shoot my gun one more thing, as far as who deserves what for scholarship money, well athletes work for the money they get. playing their sport is their job, and they can put in just as many hours as the "regular student" flipping burgers. on top of that, athletes are expected to do well in the classroom, and are often held to a higher standard. You don't have to lecture me about the hours athletes put in since I am a former athlete. And as for rifle, I know exactly what you do, and it has nothing at all to do with athletic ability. I'm not trying to be mean, but most the riflers aren't exactly in what I'd call great athletic shape. Athletics must require some type of motion. In rifle the point is actually to have as little motion as possible. Again, I know it requires a skill, but it riflers are not "athletes" and should not be in the athletic department. As for the scholarship situation, most UA athletes play without scholarships or a very small amount of money (mostly men because of the crap that is Title IX). It would be great if all athletes could have scholarships, but since they don't, none of the women's athletics teams should give out scholarships. The can keep the teams, just don't waste the money on scholarships. The only sports that the players truely should have scholarships are football and men's basketball and perhaps soccer because those are the only sports that benefit the university. Sure, they might lose money some years, but the University could never find a cheaper national advertisement for the University. Football and men's basketball play on national tv multiple times a year. Football was the ONLY game on in the entire nation for the MCB. If basketball makes the NCAA tourney, that will be huge. Soccer got mentioned along with football on ESPN's top 10 for putting Akron "on top of the world of collegiate sports" for a week. The athletes in these sports do a TON for the school. The deserve to be repaid. The rest of the athletes, if they want to play for the love of the sport, fine, but if more than half the guys on the men's track team who bust their asses year round can't even get ANY financial aid, there's no reason in hell why some girl rifler should be on a full ride.
  19. This explains it: He bolted for the Big 10http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/foot....assistants.ap/
  20. Wow, throw a tomato on my face . I was told with absolute certainty that it was Mark Criner from MTSU. Something must've fallen through with him because this game from an EXTREMELY reliable source.
  21. Well obviously it didn't give them much exposure because neither I nor about 99.9 percent of anybody else had a damn clue about any of those teams. 22. No, I can be be all inclusive and general, because theres an obvious difference in sports that can get 15,000 people to follow them 3 hours away and sports that can't get 5 people outside there parents to even show up for any event in a year. There are sports that matter, and there are sports that are just there for PC. My point is, we have enough sports that are only there for PC (ie, most women's sports) so why add more? Why not add some sports that might actually garner us some national attention (ie ice hockey or wrestling).
  23. That'd be great. Actually, you don't have to cut them, just don't waste school money in scholarships on sports nobody gives a shit about.
  24. I think I partied there once. Split level apartment right?
