I like to look for reasons for stats. That requires looking at competition. Here's a look at their schedule so far. Sat, Aug 30 vs Morgan State W 31-28 1-0 (0-0) Sat, Sept 6 @ Florida L 65-0 1-1 (0-0) Sat, Sept 13 @ Old Dominion L 17-3 1-2 (0-0) Sat, Sept 20 @ #11 Michigan State L 73-14 1-3 (0-0) So they beat Morgan State (2-3) and played Florida (2-1), ODU (3-2), and Michigan State (3-1). There is only one cross over, where a team they played faced a team we played. That is Morgan State vs. Howard. Sat, Sept 20 vs Howard* W 38-35 2-2 (1-0) So EMU struggled to knock off a team that struggled to knock of a team that we beat 41-0. That coupled with the fact that the stats in EMU's lone win look like this.... 50% 3rd down efficiency 3.3 yards per pass (5.2 per completion) 5.2 yards per carry (concerning, but this is a against a defense that gave up 35 points to Howard). I'm still concerned, mostly because we haven't shaken that "let down" mentality just yet. But for this not to be a butt kicking would mean we have not progressed as far as we all think we have. Akron 34 EMU 6 EMU was one dimensional in their win. We will likely be able to force them to be one dimensional also. Akron ends up with at least one defensive touchdown.
-
Do we? Because I recall 4 drops that killed drives against Penn State and at least 3 that killed drives against Marshall. Pohl has thrown two int's in three games. One bounced off the receiver, and the other was a desperation throw into the endzone to try and get a touchdown trailing by 28 points. Receivers other than D'orazio (sp) need to step it up.

Correct, there would be no contract between Akron University and the MAC nor would there be one between Akron University and ESPN. There is no such entity as Akron University.
-
The main reason the FCS schools are improving is because there is no waiting period for a player to transfer from FBS to FCS. So instead of a highly touted recruit who gets bumped at Alabama going to FIU, he would go to Sam Houston and be able to keep playing. That's it, it comes down to the transfer rule. Do I sit out a year and play at FIU or Akron (some still do but that is part of the secondary recruiting market) or do I go to a competitive team where I can play immediately.

I think we will have success this year, but I think Balsy was referring to "major success". Like beating most of our OOC opponents. Like a double digit win season. Sure we have that chance this year, and it would be great, split the OOC sweep the MAC, but realistically I am looking for a 8-4/7-5 season and a chance to play for a Conference Championship this year. But next year is looking like the "history making" season.

Don't let us get to you Mr. Thomas. The internet is full of people who love to criticize but likely hate their yearly reviews in their own jobs. With that said, Alexander Graham Bell has this amazing invention that would allow you to converse with people you would normally have had to ride hours to see. Check into that.

Yes, it is, especially since we constantly have nobodies come in to play. And that was my main point. You have a us, who have been bad since the stadium was built, and then throw in a crap team on Thursday night, what do you expect? Basketball draws numbers for big games Ohio, Can't, VCU, those were sell out crowds. People want to be entertained, and until we consistently win and make it known that a Zips football game is the place to be regardless of opponent, attendance is going to be pretty bad. People are still leery of this team too, 5 of 6, 4 wins in a row, but against who and when, the end of the season against 1 team, that had something to play for. I'm not happy that I go to the stadium and see all the bleachers empty in the upper deck, but this team has to earn the crowd by winning more.
-
So you are mad that a team that is 9-43 in the last 4 season drew under 10,000 for a Thursday night game against a nobody school. The team is still perceived a loser. It takes time, if the Marshall game has the same pathetic attendance then I would complain, but Bowden isn't going anywhere because only 9000 people showed up for a but kicking of the esteemed Howard University.

Yeah, because Michigan isn't important or similar to a bowl game. Nobody is paying that for 10-0 OSU vs 1-9 Indiana or more realistically 7-3 OSU vs 3-7 Illinois.
-
Um, no. The answer to your question is no. People show up for OSU games because they are there to party and assume a win is inevitable. This goes for all schools so I'm not picking on a single fan base. People like "undefeated". 8-4 teams right now easily becomes 6-6 or worse yet 5-7 because of playing only the P5 schools. People aren't going to pay or show up in droves for that. People are only going to spend $150 for crap seats if its for something meaningful (IE Bowl, playoff game)

They can't lower the percentage, .25% is lowest increase that is allowed by law.
-
Specifically for an arena? No, but I receive donation requests at least once a quarter, from the business school, college of arts and sciences, athletic department and the UA general fund.
-
If there were other options please elaborate on them. Because if there had been other options they would have done them already. The JAR is a joke, the U can't afford to sell more bonds for athletics when they have major academic facility requirements, the city can't afford anything and the companies we have certainly aren't stepping up with any major funding, not after FirstEnergy contributed $100 million to Cleveland Browns Stadium.

So for the record, proposal is for the same tax, the lie of a cap on the tax (10 years, we all know what happens in 10 years, and then 10 years after that, renewal, renewal, renewal), and then the community receives less because you will have to spend money on campaigns for the renewal. So taxes still go up, which is funny because the Coalition was against the TAX. Absolute garbage. Versus proposal one, permanent increase, 20 years of $7 million toward an arena that would attract shows here that are currently held outside the county, and a new revenue stream to sheriff's department that has out of date gear, jail, understaffed etc. So if you were so against the tax, you should still be against the tax because it's a tax. Absolutely stupid, stupid, stupid.
-
Well, I won't vote for that now.

$49,750 for the initial study on rehab to the arena. 20% of the master plan budget dedicated researching locations and traffic flow around campus. 10% of the master plan follow up. And I believe 10% of the Infocision Stadium study was in regards to creating designs for a domed stadium and creating a Carrier Dome situation. So yes, a grand total of $375,000 has been spent studying these ideas. There are classrooms around the arena and under it. Lab space exists, like Zach said, in the empty space after the bleachers are put away. Physical education uses this space. What you suggest still would cost millions, and you don't spend millions on something if it isn't going to be the final solution. What you suggest is far from a final solution and it does not take into account other glaring issues with the arena.
-
Yes, they spent about $375,000 on a three year feasibility study. Nothing has been released from that study, but I'd assume it was fairly costly to do anything. Lowering seats or removing the track (to improve sight-lines) presents the issue of losing functionality in the building (labs, class rooms, additional practice space) along with having to find a way to re-route the flow of fans. Capacity expansion requires major structural changes as the four main supports are in the corners of the actual arena, a whole new roof system would have to be installed. Neither of these things get at what the real problem to the fan experience is, which is congestion around the ticket lines, lack of restrooms, concessions, and team shops and difficulty getting from your seat to whatever does exist.

No hockey, but it does host UIFL which is Arena Football. And it has been mentioned that the proposed Akron Arena would have the floor space for hockey just that it would not include the infrastructure for the rink (chillers).
-
I'm very disappointed that you missed the 5 year anniversary of that post.

And it's about size of venue & cost, Blossom is a Summer Concert Venue, Wolstein Center seats 13,610, Q is used for very major groups. Youngstown seats 5900. The 8500 - 9000 that is mentioned for the Akron venue fills a void that exists for midsize venues. Also, this hasn't stopped Dayton from being successful with two venues. it is only 10 miles farther from Cinci than Akron is from Cleveland and 50 miles closer to Columbus. But the Nutter Center seems to have no problem with getting events. Also, seems to be a lot of talk about floor size, if you look at the way the Nutter Center is set up, it can host Monster Truck shows, circus, concerts, etc no problem. It does not have a dedicated ice maker but has hosted Hockey, and is primarily a basketball only facility. It also seats about 3000 more than what the Akron arena would.

Just on the "sale" factor alone, Green, the most populace of the 3 suburbs you mention relies on the Sheriff's department for patrol support. So most of that town, despite the lean toward conservative values, would likely be for supporting the tax. Along with Green, Coventry, Northfield, and Twinsburg also rely on the Sheriff for patrol services. About 58,000 people a little over 10% of the population and likely 25,000 voters. I don't know why there is even an argument at this point, until the campaigning starts, and unless there is a major opponent of the sales tax, while possible is unlikely, I don't see people not approving this. I've heard the argument of losing sales, but surrounding counties have not had a problem with that despite much higher sales tax. I've heard that it hurts the poor/lower class more, which is a fallacy. People take care of needs first, that would be food, food is not taxed in Ohio. A sales tax really only hurts big ticket items, which the lower class isn't going to buy anyway, cars, homes, luxury items. It averages to $59 a person, but the load of the tax goes to the largest consumers. So the impact to the lower class is even less then the $59 per person, while likely creating job opportunities for them at restaurants and stores that may spring up. (not the fake economic driver that people talk about, but there is off shoot job creation that occurs from these projects) Additionally, the number of unions and organizations that will sign on to support this will sway the vote a bit.

Just for clarification here, I'm saying the NFL is creating a fake "social moment" not movement. I'm part of that generation that doesn't care, love is love. It just feels to me like the NFL is taking advantage of a moment it never intended to have. I'm not saying the NFL is forcing people to buy anything, I'm saying they are forcing this moment, with a low caliber athlete. I couldn't care less, he's a player, I think he got disrespected in the draft (should have been 4-5th round pic), I just think the NFL's response is completely fake, and exploitative.
-
I guess, my response, is that it's the concept of a fake "social moment". Realistically a 7th round pick has about a 15% chance of making a team. yet he has the number 2 selling jersey in the NFL right now. No other late round picks even have their jersey's featured, they have to be special ordered. He still is what he is, the first NFL player, brave enough, to be honest about his preferences. The league needs to let this thing happen naturally. It's not like the 40's where there was an actual ban of a specific type of people. They are forcing it so they can say "well that's over with". And yes people emphasize their stories, but that is what we all do, look at resumes, or college applications. If people did as many amazing things as they say on those things then there wouldn't be hunger or poverty in the world.
-
And that is the most interesting part to me. Good Business. So my thought is that there is no way he doesn't make the 53 man roster. Regardless of the Rams needs, he will be on the roster when the season starts. The NFL will not want this to "fail", not for the cultural reasons, like they should, but simply for the ability to market the product to another group, who quite frankly was already watching anyway.
-
So just wanted to see if anyone else find this as interesting as I do... 7th round pick (a little late based on his predicted draft stock 5th or 6th) because of being a tweener. His jersey is available for sale on the Rams Team shop, front and center, the position normally reserved for your first round selection. I am unable to find any other late round jerseys available, for instance Pierre Desir (which is much better story overall). So is this exploiting the moment?
