I'm not trying to insult anyone. You obviously feel the way I do that it's important to promote the program and University. I was just trying to point out the necessity of doing so. If you feel frustrated with word of mouth advertising, and you see how difficult it is to get even one extra person to come with you to a game. How do you think it feels to have to get 8700 additional season ticket sales? (We traditionally have had between 1200 and 2000 season tickets). That was the main goal, they increased it by 100% to this point. I'm not trying to defend them either. It was barely publicized that there was an open house during the spring game. They have yet to have a well publicized open house for the general public. I have heard no plans of an opening celebration for the stadium (which it better have). The commercials in January were horrible, and I haven't seen any since February. I've seen a few below the fold ads in the sports page and maybe one full page ad. That was only for the Beacon, what about the Suburbanite, Westside Leader, Repository, Plain Dealer? Where is the cooperation with the Alumni association? I've gotten at least three request for money from the Department of Development (every alumni get's those) where is the piggy back insert about the new stadium and the low cost of season tickets?Where is the inter-department cooperation? What has the Department of Institutional Marketing done in regards to the stadium? All I was saying is everyone should be doing all they can.

Um, No, the marketing department gets paid to market athletics. They should be held at a much higher standard.Um, yes they do get paid (and some are just grad assistants that get paid very little) and they have a very small budget to work with, so how "out of the box" can a small budgeted group of 10 actually be?My point was, if you as a fan, student, and alumnus aren't promoting the team and the experience then you're no better then the Ohio.com haters. You'll complain about the situation but you won't do anything to help."But it's not our responsibility G-Mann"I'm afraid that it is my friends.
-
That sounds rather defeatist. Should we not hold ourselves to the same standard we hold the marketing department? It's just as important that the Alumni promote the school as it is 10 people in the marketing department.

If you really want to help out the marketing department...1. Get your friends to come to games2. Get your coworkers to come to games3. Give the ticket office a contact at your place of employment4. Talk up the stadium and how nice it is and will be

Are they going to be bricking over those supports or leaving them open? The supports will have a brick facade.

Yeah see, I like those, and the difference in opinion probably has to do with the generation gap. Most of the older folk on here prefer "tradition" and I have a feeling those uni's were made after asking what the athletes wanted to see.But also, they are the Nike testing ground, and I would love to have that. This is pretty impressive.

Downtown Arena might not be such a good idea
g-mann17 replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Off Topic, Smack & Jokes
Hmm... Spicer, Vine, Goodkirk, and ExchangeNow, the corner of Spicer and Exchange is the Skyway Restaurant site. The block between Vine and Nash is mostly off campus housing and Fraternity/Sorority sites. If you build there, where do they go? Yeah that's right, they have to be relocated. But yes, I'm dishonest. -
Akron #93 on the NY Times football countdown
g-mann17 replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips Football
So a flush, Buckeye, Orange, and Mountaineer fall somwhere between the two? -
Contest Winner would be announced in May 2010. Assuming funding is secured close to that date, 6 months for planning and bidding November 2010, kick off being done in February 2011. I would say Fall 2012.

I thought it would make several people happy. (Including me).Specific details are that it has to attach to the second floor of the "hotel" dorm rooms as well as have a ground entry on the Quaker side. Span the 200 ft while maintaining clearance height for trains and have a ground entry on the eastern side of tracks.

Bridge from Quaker to Campus coming.UA and DMTC holding contest for first ever all titanium pedestrian bridge. This is very interesting and could be another landmark for the campus.

Channel 5 NewsSee these are the things I thought the USO was supposed to prevent. You have a 10,000 student school paying a guy $400,000 a year, buying a million dollar house, and giving him a $1000 car allowance? That is a huge waste of money, when you could have just rolled CSU under the University of Akron's Leadership.

My Sister-in-law is Canadian and her family comes down here all the time. They stop in Niagara and Erie, Geneva and Cleveland, and of course Akron (because that's where my family lives) and what's interesting is where they have never stopped. Wow, I'm just being out done here... you guys are funny..You know as well as I, that if you live in the Midwest you better have a good sense of humor or life will be pretty crappy. Here's to a great new friendly rivalry.

Getting to know the '09 Akron Football team (Houston blog)
g-mann17 replied to scottandholman's topic in Akron Zips Football
I have to give you some props on the Bel Biv DeVoe Torrence thing. However, he isn't technically a transfer from Ohio State, they pulled his offer and he came to us because JD stuck by him. He red-shirted because of huge depth, Allen, Johnson (Miami-FL transfer), and Kennedy. Kennedy became the top running back mostly because of injuries to Allen and Johnson. Other than that thanks. -
This is a camp that is partially sponsored by Nike. So as much as it says "Lebron moved it to San Diego" it should say "Nike has received huge 'requests' to have Lebron camp in California." You'll notice it's San Diego, and not LA, Oakland or Sacramento.

I could not attend this year. The University sent a note stating the Outing would be held on the 8th. I made plans to head out to Arizona the following week. Then UA changed the date to the 15th. Bastards.Cap'n - Sorry to hear you missed the football outing. Are you going to attend the Men's Basketball Outing at Silver Lake Country Club on Monday, August 31st?Yes...unless someone changes the date on me! I heard, in truly great wisdom of the athletic department style; that the outing was changed to September 12.

Downtown Arena might not be such a good idea
g-mann17 replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Off Topic, Smack & Jokes
Traffic studies will contradict that statement. But you also need to realize that in our country, personal transportation (the auto) isn't going anywhere in your life time, and probably won't be for the next 100 years or so. The Bridge being constructed is going to be more pedestrian friendly, but you don't cut off a main artery for non existant foot traffic. I agree that there needs to be a nice safe & simple connection from Quaker to campus. But you also aren't ever going to be able to make a high traffic road to the heart of downtown and a very busy train track (1 train every 20 minutes) into something that is pedestrian friendly. The best you can do is swing it south through where the Bell-Aire Building is now and keep it high so that you can allow for foot traffic under the bridge. And for the people crossing from Quaker you make it so that it has 12 foot sidewalks. -

They could easily move it south after the Bel-Aire building is removed. That area you are referring to is now a medical building of some sort. If you look at campus you can see the general area was mapped pre-stadium construction. -
Barbara Boxer is an ungreatful B****
g-mann17 replied to ksu sucks's topic in Off Topic, Smack & Jokes
Ok, I wasn't going to say anything.People are saying "she's a servant of the people" yes and so is the general. And there is certain rank that goes along with government position. She has more rank than he does. Like it or not. Additionally this was a senate hearing. That basically means all of the senators involved are now magistrates and hold even more authority than they normally do. So yes, she had every right to look into that General's eyes and say "you will address me as Senator Boxer". If you are in a court room and say sir or ma'am to a judge. They will correct you in the same manner. -
Parking lot above North Parking Deck to close
g-mann17 replied to zipfan85's topic in General UA & Campus Discussion
First, that was announced a while ago. Second, the lot has 224 spaces. The Parking deck being built will have 1200 plus. That a gain of a 1000 spaces. Third, the polymer engineering department drives our research. More research space means more research capability which means more research grants and it means more respect for the school. More respect for the school means your degree is worth more. -

g-mann17 replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Off Topic, Smack & Jokes
I like the spot, but they will have to incorporate the Mill St bridge somehow because the city is spending 3 million + to replace it and make it fit in with the University's architecture. -
Hmm, I don't know then. I know they have party decks on both sides so if it was the very corner of the building it would like a big hole. But it is also possible they noticed a fault in the party deck floor and are fixing it.

I'm still freaking out, big time. What I saw today has me concerned. The SE corner of the press box is getting torn apart. There's a pile of concrete rubble and chunks are getting torn out. There aren't even any floors or walls going in. It's just a big three-story hole that looks like it's being torn down instead of being built. No pictures? No camera. I know what I saw, though.Ok but was it on the building itself?
