  1. Some more tidbits. Wyoming and Niagara are not going to be on this season's schedule. Niagara's coach is upset over the outcome of the last 2 meetings with the Zips, including his ejection from last years game at the JAR. Wyoming can see the handwriting on the wall and see's no benefit in getting the asses handed to them at the JAR this season. Both teams will owe the Zips $50k for breaking the contracts. As Go Zips said in his post, Abreu is coming here to play right away. Dambrot says he can play point guard and brings things to the table that none of our existing guards have shown to date. IE the ability to run the offense, penetrate and dish the ball to open teammates. Quincy Diggs will be at the 3 spot. Coach says we need a shutdown defender at that position and Diggs is the man to get that done. He will also play the 2 when the match ups are right. Of the three high school recruits, Egner is the most likely to see playing time next season. His attitude and ability to defend gives him a good shot at significant minutes. Dakota Euton will be a "stretch 4" and be able to see some minutes if his defense will allow. Green is a great shooter, but might see a redshirt to work on his overall game.

The team hasn't heard from Humpty since his fathers funeral. He is devastated by the loss of his father, who raised him and was his best friend. Right now, Humpty is not sure where his future lies. Steve Swiech is set to graduate this spring and will finish out his playing career at the University of California/Pennsylvania. Steve made a great speech about how much he loved his time at Akron and will always be a Zip first. What a great kid.

The team gives out awards for alumni of the year and fan of the year. I'm proud to say the Zipsnation.org member and moderator, Zipwatcher was awarded the Fan of the Year. I can't think of a more deserving fan to get this award. ZW is the definition of a true fan who is always there to support the team through good and bad. :)

  2. Rasor even confirms something he shouldn't be confirming because it's dead wrong. Maybe it's a sign that his head is more into politics these days than basketball.

With the departure of the three transfers and two seniors (Jimmy Conyers and Chris McKnight), Akron has five open scholarships. Abreu and the other three recruits will account for four of them. Barring another signee, guard Darryl Roberts will use the fifth scholarship, after playing his prior three years as one of the most productive walk-ons in the country.

Why is this dead wrong, if you will pardon my ignorance?

    13 Scholarships available.

    Returning players:

    Brett McKnight

    Brett McClanahan

    Humpty Hitchens

    Steve McNeese

    Zeke Marshall

    Mike Bardo

    Daryl Roberts

    Nicola Cventinovich

    New recruits:

    Josh Egner

    Michael Green

    Dakota Euton

    Alex Abreau

    ?????

    8+5=13

D Roberts is already on scholarship.

  3. Steward is most certainly a D1 caliber PG. Hope this is erroneous.

That may be true, but wouldn't he have to sit out a year if he transfered to another D-1 program? After all he has gone through, already sitting out because of injury, I would think he would want to play right away.

  4. I just finished filling out my season end questionnaire from the AD about Zips basketball. One of the questions is what is your primary source of informant ion about the program. The list included Gozips.com, the ABJ, the PD and also ZN.O. I guess enough people listed ZN.O on the football survey as a write-in, they felt compelled to put us on the list. It would be interesting to see what % of the surveys listed ZN.O as their main source of info.

  5. +1 Nice post M B)

After sitting out of ZNO for the better part of several weeks due to the fear that ZNO tattle-tale is lurking, this thread is too intriguing to sit out any longer.

While I completely agree with many of the ideas expressed here-

The football team sacrifices it's coach's record by playing a lot of essentially unwinnable BCS-level road games to get cash for the Zips Athletic Department.

Zips football program played in a total dump of a stadium for the past 25 years

It ain’t football fault that the hoops team will draw, on-average, 3,000 fans.

The schedule excited absolutely no one.

Blame the lack of eye-catching wins over marquee teams (Florida State was long, long ago)

Blame our lethargic approach to home games (remember when we NEVER lost at the JAR?)

Blame the lack of a "star," must-see player.

Blame the JAR team shop, who doesn't sell Zips Basketball replica jerseys (we wouldn't want little kids wearing such things to games, or around town, would we?)

Blame the $3.00 hotdogs and understaffed concession lines (even with our weak crowds)

We need to work together, not point fingers

But this notion that the athletic department dies without football is untrue. Like Zip_ME87, I want all the teams to be successful and am classified a Zips fan-not just football or just basketball.

Sure football can draw 30,000 and get paid $700K and have 3.5 hour commercials on ESPN in a bowl game while basketball can only draw 5500 and will not get this exposure unless they make a Sweet 16 run. But the football teams’ budget is also 6-8 times bigger. Where they even close to breaking even counting football only related revenue? I thought the ABJ posted an article on the amount of student fees that support the athletic department, especially football? Wasn’t something like 80% of the budget from fees? So even though they can earn $700K, they spend it and more.

Yes, baiting KD to bash the football program was shameful, but this Zips football guy v. Zips basketball guy will always be there. Always!

Why, because Akron football guy(s) doesn’t really exist. They are all in Columbus in the fall. My hunch is that there are many hoops-only fans in Akron because they don’t give a damn about football. I mean really give a damn about football. Therefore, these folks will always want UA to direct most of the funding to basketball (or soccer). Hence the football v. basketball mentality! The questions about football facilities vs. what basketball has will continue to persist.

Furthermore, many also believe that it would be much easier and cost-effective to build a hoops “dynasty” at a place like Akron. Why? With nice facilities and 2 or 3 really good players, you can make a run at the Sweet 16. In football, you will need 10-15 really good players to make a run at the top 16 and again, these really good players are wearing red and silver…

MAC- We all talk about getting out of the God-forsaken MAC Conference.

Where the hell are we going? Has someone created this perfect conference where UA football and UA hoops can BOTH prosper? Sorry, it doesn’t exist.

Even in a perfect world where we join a BCS level conference where we can get our grubby hands on some of the BCS tv revenue in football and go 7-5, what are our chances of making the big-dance in basketball, even if they expand to 165 teams? Slim to none and slim left town….

We are MAC, sorry. Until we get some of LBJ’s cash or find a way to get alumni to support it-with big time dollars, we are stuck. Let’s get the MAC conference to start acting like grown-ups and make schools accountable or kick them out…

JAR- Yes the seating sucks. I pay a PSL for two seats- all so I can STAND. Otherwise I would miss half the action. Would it be nice to have a new arena, of course, but where is the dough? While we clearly need better locker rooms, offices, etc. , I still find it hard to believe that we can’t start over with NEW seats.

Why can’t we essentially build 8 – 4 lower, 4 upper permanent sections of seating- With the proper sight lines. Even the furthest seat in Info is great. I would have a hard time finding even one seat in the JAR that is great.

Cameron Indoor is a glorified gym. The seats are on top/close to the action and I don’t see them Dukies building a new arena any time soon.

    Marketing- I have no idea.

Students- I would suggest hiring two permanent full-time employees—One female and one male that dedicates 100% of their time to meeting with and getting to know every student enrolled at UA and then getting them to games….We all know that if you don’t go to games as a student, you probably will not go when you graduate.

Butler- Yes the butler did it. The run they had is similar to the run UC had in football.

Butler getting to the finals in a basketball crazed state-with IU, PU and ND to compete with was pretty amazing. Ditto for UC in a football-crazed state like Ohio.

So, yes, it can be done. Let’s stop pointing fingers and work together……

  6. Because football is a real sport not a place where you can see who the best at exercising is.

Getsy is a real good D1 quarterback and a genius in the sport of football; he would sit coach only meetings as a player. He should have never had to pay for school. The way the system is Football gets full rides in D1a . But Harris would not sign to release him so anybody would be mad if I got charged a year of tuition when they should not have to.

Thanks for your input Mrs. Getsy. ;):D

  7. Huggins watched a University build a high school gym for his up and coming basketball team -- he saw what Guzetta thought of college athletics (in particular men's basketball) and he say f-off. I don't blame him...the school then committed more to their football team by going out and hiring Faust and ditching a guy like Dennison and what was his choice. The school showed him that it didn't value basketball and would ditch anyone at the drop of a hat..

    ????

Just so nobody is misled by this....

Huggins did not even start coaching here until after the completion of the JAR.

And...Muse was Akron's president during the Huggins era.

Bob Rupert was the head coach when the JAR opened.

  8. Under ohio law, it is presumed that a minor(male or female) under the age of 16(17?) can not "give consent" to a sexual act. To go along with that premise, a 17 year can be considered an adult when committing a crime(m or f). Thats how a 17 year old male can be charged with statutory rape of a 15 year old.

Thanks for the clarification Chris ... er .. I mean Hilltopper. That's a pretty detailed understanding of the rules you have there.

Haven't you seen my tall, blonde, cheerleader, 16 year old daughter? There's an old saying, when it comes to young girls, 18+15 will get you 20.:D

  10. Over the past several years, Zipmeister has posted bogus press releases on April 1st which have caused great anguish to some of the more feeble-minded on the board who hope we can get into a better athletic conference. In deference to the new wave that has taken over the country, he pledges to "change." No more will he falsely build your hopes up only to have them come crashing back down. Never again will he suggest that Notre Dame is joining the MAC. In fact, his new motto is "Change you can step in." :moon: Happy April Fool's Day fellow travelers.

I think you need a new screen name after that statement. I'm suggesting GP1 jr. ;):D

  11. I think at this point anyone who doesn't expect a very "interesting" offseason is kidding themselves. Adjustments are going to need to be made, that is clear. KD see's it and the people on this board see it. The coaching staff has to sit down and take a long look at their personnel and determine who fits in where for next season and exactly what adjustments need to be made. Add to that the continuing debate over what to do with our 4 remaining OOC games. Do we make adjustments there and try to schedule a little better or do we continue to play a watered down OOC schedule? Probably the most interest though will come with transfers and recruiting. We already know that at least one player who otherwise would be, is not going to be back from last years team. Speculation at this point is that this number could rise as the offseason progresses and we look to re-tool our team. It makes sense that Swiech would be someone who might look for time elsewhere. At this juncture it is pretty obvious that a slow-footed 6'10" widebody down low in the post is not what the Zips are looking for. He just doesn't fit into our plans any time in the foreseeable future. The same can be said for Sullivan as the Zips just don't need another undersized combo-guard any time in the near future. Those two seem like the most obvious choices if we are going to see two guys leave the program. But, there are others that come to mind. Humpty has already been brought up as his personality often seems to be at odds with the coaching staff and, to be honest, he probably hasn't been utilized properly since he's been here. Bardo's name has been tossed around too as he already has his degree and, let's be honest here, he's peaked as far as on-court performance goes. Two other names that come to mind, Nikola Cvetinovic and Brett McClanahan. Nikola and KD seemed to have some real problems late in the year this year. A guy like Nik could probably go back home to Serbia right now and sign a pretty decent contract to play over there. If the rift between him and KD is big enough, that might be a possibility. Nitro is another case of a guy who isn't being properly utilized. The staff thought of him this year as a replacement for Linhart, and tried to make him into a SF. Problem is that Nitro isn't big enough or quick enough to take on that responsibility, and his playing time and effectiveness suffered. He still has a redshirt year left, so transfering to another DI school, sitting a year and having two to play would maybe be a possibility for him. Just throwing things out there.

I'm planning on playing the Mega Milllions lottery today. Since your such a clairvoyant, maybe you could pick my #'s for me! B)

  12. Torrence and Wackerly to transfer

One more scholarship opens. Too bad, I thought Torrence had far and away the most potential on the team.

Awful news. I hope JD wasn't the one who ruined him by sitting him so much.

The new coaches are not respecting anything that has happened in the past and are playing head games with some of the past starters(not referring to the above). I hated head games and that BS.

I hope things turn out well.

    head games?

    Are you serious?

That's BS crap to do to anyone.

Maybe saying that they don't respect old starters is the same thing as putting everyone on the same level with a clean slate from another vantage point, but to intentionally mess with people is a completely different thing, and not how I would expect a quality program to be run.

Even if you didn't like a guy or thought he wasn't quality material by your standards, you man up and tell them. Women play mind games. That crap is petty

I think coach Kest had the right idea when she cleaned house a few years ago. If a player just wants to get by on what the old coaching staff told them, too bad. Those who don't want to get with the new program are welcome to leave.

  13. Now I'm the one who was totally wrong! Lol. Yeah, that's really weird.

Can we sue for breach of contract? Not having the Info Team Shop open by now is shameful. It's embarrassing really. Is our athletics department demanding enough excellence to be equally appalled and embarrassed? Or are they content with incompetence? Knowing the less-than-brilliant history of the department, I'm afraid I know what the answer is.

  14. After reading this, I see why the Zips wanted this guy.

    Canton Rep Story

    Impact player?

Ask Toledo St. John’s. Egner ripped the Titans for 24 points on 8-of-11 shooting in last week’s regional final. He beat them off the dribble, including a nifty reverse layup. He drilled two 3s. He hammered home dunks.

That type of versatility comes from being the hard-working son of a coach, and it’s earned him a basketball scholarship to Akron.

“Since I was 5 I’ve worked with my dad,” the 18-year-old said this week after practice. “That’s our biggest common bond, definitely.”

His father coached Josh in grade school and then helped out with his AAU teams once he reached middle school. Not that Josh looked like a future Division I college basketball player then.

“I was actually really fat when I was little,” Josh said. “I grew a lot between seventh and eighth grade. I just kept growing and I got some bounce when I was in high school, so that was nice.”

Some bounce is an understatement. After increasing his leaping ability by working out at High Intensity Training in Green, Josh possesses a 37-inch vertical leap that allows him to produce NBA-quality dunks rarely seen at Jackson.

“I think it’s funny because we’ll go to AAU tournaments and stuff like that and people will come watch the white kid dunk,” said Josh, who spent the last three summers playing on the King James Shooting Stars AAU team sponsored by LeBron James.

Josh views his dunking as “just another asset.”

“It’s just harder to block a shot when you’re up that high.”

    EMOTION FUELS A FIRE

Dunks aside, Egner is Jackson’s second-leading scorer (13.2) and rebounder (7.6) behind All-Ohio forward Josh Henniger. He also is a fiery leader.

“My emotions are what make me the player I am,” Egner said. “I just go 100 percent, that’s how I am. ... At the same time, I know I have to keep my emotions in check so that I don’t hurt my team.”

It’s fine line to walk between being fiery but not disrespectful. He’s stepped over it before and his parents have talked to him about it. He learned on his own, too, when a technical foul caused him to miss some of a summer tournament game.

“It is something we talk about,” his dad said. “Where’s that edge? You leave the officials alone and use the emotion to get to the zone. I’ve told him there’s a zone you get to and when you find it, you’ll know it. The basket looks bigger and you see things before they happen. Take that emotion and funnel it that way.”

For all that fire on the floor, Gary said his son is quite different away from it.

“He’s a 3.6 student and he tries to do things the right way,” dad said. “He teaches Sunday school at our church. He probably doesn’t like anyone to know this, but he likes to read; the classics, everything. It’s a passion of his that we encouraged him in just as well as basketball.”

  15. This is Hilltoppers daughter and I am a competitive cheerleader. It might be that I am used to it, but I don't find anything wrong with the male dancer. Actually I think that it is amazing that he is even on the team. On my team there are four guys and there are a total of nine guys in the gym. These athletes are some of the coolest people I know, and probably the best athletes in the gym. I think that people need to get over the idea that guys can't do the same things girls can do. He's good and should continue dancing!!!
