  1. It's 1036am est and Can't state still sucks! Does that help???
  2. Can't say that i agree with the call but we are forgetting one very important thing. The play worked....Price just dropped the ball. That and the dropped td by the TE were huge!
  3. Need to catch up on the list.During the VMI game: Genny Cream Ale, Blatz, Bush, and Old Style (Yep we drank them all)During the FIU game: Abita Amber, Abita Purple Haze, and Abita Turbo Dog.* Was in New Orleans and was checking the score and did check the nation to make sure the beers counted!
  4. Thanks for all the kind words @Jhonny84 Williams played a lot when one of the ends went out. Saw in the paper that it was Hazmie. I just noticed he was getting off the line pretty quick and was in on a few plays around the line of scrimmage. He should be a good addition.
  5. Thoughts from my Cincy visit.First off I had a blast! Took in a Red's game on Friday. The park is very nice and I love how open it is. A little too small for my taste but that is made up for in the food and crowd. Had a big red and a local German beer. Lots of Brewers fans there and they are awesome! Die hard fans that love to party. Also took in the Oktober fest downtown after the game on Saturday. They draw over 500k to the fest over the course of the weekend and it was fun. Still liked the Cleveland fest but you can't beat tons of people walking around with boots filled with beer!Cincy's campus was a little nicer than I remember from the last time I was there (about 8 years ago). The campus reminds me a lot of Syracuse but a little less hilly. Due to the Oktoberfest there weren't any hotels in downtown Cincy so we stayed by the airport (in Kentucky) and that turned out to be a blessing in disguise. We were able to take the bus downtown and then transfer over to campus. Worked out very well and was by far the cheapest option. We started at a bar called Uncle Moes and that was a true blue college bar. Most of the staff were college kids and they were still drunk from last night! Think Bob's or Joe's before they were torn down. Also hit a bar right next to the stadium and ran into some zips fans.Everyone there was super nice and really respectful of Akron. Most would say "Didn't Akron used to be good" and "I hope you are able to turn things around quickly" Many referenced the last time Akron played Cincy at Akron with Akron coming up just short. On to the game:Dr. Z you asked me to pay close attention to Clayton Moore and the Wide outs. I did and I have mixed feelings about him. I can't knock him on the fumble as he was trying to make a play. The first pick 6 I think is a case of him thinking he could make an out from the far hash. The second pick was almost the exact same throw. He has to learn from his mistakes and can't make that throw. I still think he has more to offer than Nicely as he looks just like the same from last year. Looks the part but has no touch and no feel to the pocket. Moore can make things happen and the team responds to him more than Nicely. With that being said it doesn't matter who the QB is until the line improves. Too many times were you see no push on running plays and blown assignments leading into the quarterback getting killed. I don't think there is an answer for the line this year. I expect better results against the bad teams and poor results against the good teams.Way too many drops by the tight ends and wide outs. Fleming gets open but either has poor hands or it's a lack of concentration. Haven't seen enough of him to figure that out. Price also had a big drop. These could've lead to potential points in the first half. Since I am more optimistic by nature I'll now move on to the second half. Granted Akron played against the 2nd and 3rd string but they were able to win that half and make some plays. I was really happy they went back to Moore and he showed something by hitting on some big plays. Jawon is a big play back and will keep getting better. Good vision and good speed for his size. He's gonna be a good one. I tried to play attention to other freshmen and Ford, March, and Williams all stood out. When watching this team play I have tried to keep things in perspective. They've played 3 teams that are much better than Akron and they have no chance in those games right now. They are playing 12 true freshmen and a lot of young players. They have shown flashes and as they get bigger the team "should" get better. These next two games are huge for the team and the fans. Win both and the players continue to buy in and the fans start to relax. Lose both or one and it could get ugly. Very interested to see how VMI goes. I'll be on the field so I'll try to add more next week. Let's hope the team builds on the second half.Cap if you can add the following beers if they haven't been added:OTR (over the Rhine)PBRSam Adam's Summer AleChristian Moerlein
  6. the three biggest things that stood out to me were the o line, poor tackling by the back 7, and kick coverage.O Line: They are just flat out bad right now and that's the most disappointing part of this team. I understand they are a little thin due to injuries but they get blown off the line a lot. Their pass protection is even worse as Moore had little time to throw. I think there was 8 or 9 sacks? A few were Moore's fault but there were a ton ton of times when he was running for his life. He was lit up on the interception he threw. Moore and Jawon have shown flashes but need the line to gel to get consistently better.Poor tackling: I don't think this has been talked about enough. GP1 has mentioned on the board that Wagner makes a lot of plays but are 5 yards past the line. You can say the same for the other linebackers as well. They are not flowing to the ball well at all. Then you have the secondary. I hate to pick on a specific player but Richmond may have to be the softest strong safety I've ever seen. Very athletic and can help in coverage but he's not a run stopper. This shows up time and time again as he blows tackles that lead to long runs or short passes that turn into a big gain. I know Ford is a true freshmen but I'd like to see him get some more reps. The hit he made to force a fumble is what this team needs. Would also like to see Seth Cunningham get some more reps if the D plays nickle. This way you can move Waller on the slot and you have 2 bigger db's on the edge. Every time Waller is matched up on a bigger receiver he has to play off and the bigger wide outs eat him up. He has ball skills but doesn't get a chance to use them. The slot would be a better spot for him. Kick coverage: This is on the coaching. You can't have your coverage teams consistently start behind the 20 and expect your offense to bail you out. On the flip side the lane discipline on covering kicks is junior varsity. This needs to change for when Akron plays lessor competition and is in closer games if they expect to win any games this year.I didn't expect Akron to win the game but I didn't expect the final score either. I'll echo some of the statements on the board that most people in the stands were just sad. I saw some people trying to fire the team up and some people pissed. Simkovich comes to mind. Nobody would have been shocked if Akron starts 0-3 before the season started. I just hope we see improvement on Saturday and then get their first win against VMI.Was in in lot 9 for the first time this year and had a good time. Miss the younger crowd but the food was an improvement. Cap if you can add the following beers:Great Lakes NosferatuLeininkugel OktoberfestLabatt Blue and Light Heading down to Cincy to watch bad football and participate in an awesome Oktoberfest! Anyone heading down feel free to IM
  7. I'm anxious to see what RFr Jamar Williams (5-11, 210) can do on the field. He was rather highly thought of coming out of HS. agreed. he was on the 2 deep coming into fall. if this team is going to be decent the front seven needs to play at a high level. someone will need to step up that doesn't have a lot of experience. also really excited to see if ty williams can contribute right away and how they plan on using him. again some big if's but if he's ready he could be a fun one to watch.
  8. With Little out who takes his place? Also with Gilmer being injury prone are the back ups at lb ready to step in and pay? Will Frosh lb Justin March get playing time? What about Miller? Does Rossi start to see snaps at two positions?
  9. Love these quotes "I want Akron to know they are getting a guy who wants to win," Kretzer said. "I'm going to go there and put forth my best efforts. I want to earn the respect of my coaches and teammates and return that respect to them. "College ball is completely different than high school ball, so I'm going to need to get a little stronger. I also want to work on my ball handling skills and foot speed, but all around, I'm just going to be a guy that goes up there and gets it done."
  10. +1 rifle. I'll just add Zippy coming out on the segway and face-planting twice....then her head falls off with grown men laughing and children screaming. Should've known that was an omen for the season. So wish I could find a youtube clip of that.
  11. WOW...this is a good one. It actually slips out of my memory from time to time. Let me add to what you've said .....I think it was ESPNs first Thursday night game ever. Yes, the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders were there. It was also the day we decided to paint the light pole on the 50 yard line green to help it blend in with the field for TV. Most people came by bus from campus, and I remember everyone having beer. People even snuck beer balls into the place that night. I remember seeing one roll out onto the field at one time (I sure hope it was empty). And seat cushions from one of the banks were flying around too. Crazy night. And I think the relationship that started that year between Beamer and Faust led to a lot of those future games against Virginia Tech. I do have a favorite game though. Who else remembers the home opener in 1992 when Darren Alcorn kicked the 57 yard field goal to beat Toledo? I think it was the only time everyone ran out onto the field in celebration after the end of a game. That was our first game ever in the MAC, and the place was packed because it was an Acme-Zip game. That was also the season we went 7-3-1, our best record ever in D-1A. Who would have thought, after almost 20 years, that duplicating such a record would become so difficult?I can tell you that in the Marshall comeback game people rushed the field. I can tell you that because I think i made it onto the field before the ball hit the ground. By far my favorite game. But my favorite memory has to be beating Can't to win the MAC east in the blizzard. I still remember people making fires in the middle of the parking lots to keep warm. Making breakfast burritos and having them turn cold in about 10 seconds. Watching people run to the bathrooms only to disappear from sight after 10 yards. Going to games now there are so many people that claim to be at that game. It's kinda like when a drunk Indians fan starts to tell me how he was either at the 10 cent beer night or Barker's perfect game. I know they are lying but I let them tell the story anyways.
  12. this is big! great hire!
  13. well for the people who haven't been there like five times already....how is it?
  14. it's about time. the pics look really good. excited to see if any of my dollar bills made the cut haha click me
  15. Rivals had a nice breakdown of teams that had players drafted since 2000. Akron is about on par with the rest of the MAC click for breakdown
  16. press conference with the media to go over spring ball. 2 things stood out to me 1. Regarding the progress of UA's three quarterbacks (Clayton Moore, Patrick Nicely, Zach D'Orazio): "I think we have a good evaluation so far on all three, but we will continue to evaluate all three of them as we move on. So Patrick Nicely will still run out with the first team offense when we come into training camp, but we will still have a competition between all three and won't name a starter until we are prepared based on their performance. I was pleased with Patrick Nicely's development and he showed more comfort in the offense, he did a nice job in the spring. I was also pleased with Clayton Moore's progress. This is his first exposure to the offense and it's different than what he's done before. Zack D'Orazio has been pleasant to be around, and there's something about him with moving the team and making plays. The good news is we are better at the quarterback position than at anytime we were last season and we have more depth and we are really pleased with that position, but that competition will continue to go for a while." 2.Regarding the running back position: "We have three running backs right now coming out of spring – Broderick Alexander, Jawon Chishlom and Marvin Staten. All of them did a tremendous job. We are going to battle it out a bit. Broderick has the experience, Chisholm has tremendous talent and Marvin did a nice job for a running back who just showed up. Jawon had a nice spring game, he carried the ball 14 times for a 124 yards and he's a very talented young man. Broderick, I don't think was 100 percent in spring practice coming off an achillies injury last June, so we are hopeful once we get him through the summer of work with our strength coach he will be closer to the form we saw him last spring before he got injured. So we like all of our running backs, and we think we can do what we want them to do. Jawon showed Saturday that when he touches the ball he's got some big-play ability. Also if you listen to the audio they ask if any true freshmen will get any time and he responds with Bostick. To me that means that Rossi is a lock for lb. here's the link to get you to the audio click me
  17. here you go click for spring roster
  18. Chisolm looks like the real deal. hits the hole hard, is very fast, and just big enough size to take on tacklers. he's going to be fun to watch and if Alexander can get healthy (still looked a bit slow) Akron can have a nice 1-2 punch. while the o line is really thin they looked light years better than this time last year. the team in general looks light years ahead of last year. much more crisp getting in and out of huddles. not a ton of blown assignments. not a lot of coaches shaking their heads. suel looked nice and on d Williams and Miller were nice surprises although Miller needs to add weight. haven't read too much about the qb's but Moore looks the part. Nicely's stat line was respectable but he was high on a lot of throws. i didn't see much difference from him last year. Moore on the other hand had a better tempo and is a much more accurate passer. i know it's just one practice but I'll be surprised if he isn't the starter. many people i talked to during the game agreed. the secondary is a mess. with Holmes out and Richardson blowing out his acl the secondary is stretched very thin. i did like the switch of Cunningham to safety and was told he's had a nice camp. talked to a parent of a player who was moved to safety from corner just 2 days ago due to the Richardson injury. curious about where the team will play Rossi. i'd have to think that with Chisholm and others at rb he's due to start at lb. that excites me as Akron has talent but players like Little and Gilmer never seem to stay healthy. he'd be perfect to get some snaps on the strong side. went into this game with no expectations and came away both optimistic and concerned. looks like they have some play makers on both sides of the ball but are really thin at all positions. i do feel better about this team at this time than the same time last year.
  19. i referred to him as a bmac clone due to size, the fact that he hasn't seen a shot he doesn't like, and he's not a big fan of d. could fill that bench instant offense role that mcnight had. Tree is every bit a 4 but is super athletic and very long
  20. had the pleasure of watching the akron game downtown (cleveland) and walked into a bar that was set up for xavier alumni. they were great and all were cheering for the zips! very knowledgeable and at least talked 10 people came up to me to talk about the triple ot game with j ball went off. i made sure to ask everyone i talked to about walsh and most said the same thing. very good defender and very athletic. classic tweener/combo guard. sad to see him go but they all felt he'd never crack the starting 5 during his stay there. oh and a few mentioned a solid mid range game. i also had a chance to see harney play when he was in high school. it was a showcase at the wolstien center. tons of talent there as warren harding, mentor, garfield hts, and st. ed's were also there. the top player for benedictine was cam wright who is at pitt. and he was a fast athletic guard. while he was the top player on the floor harney held his own and showed that he can play. he was very raw but showed tremendous athleticism and hops. didn't see him shoot too much as he played off ball and got a lot of his points running the floor and getting boards ala josh. if this team continues to play hard d with an offense that likes to push the ball he'll fit right in. everyone that i've talked with that follows cleveland high school hoops raved about tree. some refer to him kinda like the script from the blind side. that troubled/lazy in the past...that talented. couldn't gone to a major program had he shown up for class at least half the time. haven't seen him play but that's what i heard. looking forward to them plus the brett mcnight clone get in the mix. big big things next year for the zips!
