Don't think I've been looking forward to a Zips football game this much since the opener for the new stadium. Cautiously optimistic about tomorrow. Think we pull this one out. What I know is I'll be making awesome rubens.

We can debate this till we're all blue in the face but the truth is Akron wants out of the MAC and is thinking of itself as better than the conference it's in. The growth the university has seen the past decade plus reflects that. If you want to see a MAC school that is content to stay in the MAC read this Can't is lame. Man I don't ever want Akron to think that way again! Akron will get out of the MAC. It's just a matter of when and to what conference. I am of the opinion that Akron is a good fit for CUSA but needs one travel partner. The question is who would that team be? If they don't have a partner can Akron boost it's budget enough to handle travel expenses? They've been positioning themselves to make this move for a long time. I applaud them in their efforts to think big. B) B) B) B)

Forgot to mention lots of man coverage on d with blitz packages. Lots of WR screens and back shoulder throws on O.

Good stuff JZ I'll just add a few more observations 1. Holmes is at FS and with the 1's. I think this will be a nice fit for him as he was a little stiff in the hips at cb 2. Even without Griggs playing I thought the d line looked solid. All four showed some burst with Williams, Presley, Price, and Grice playing the most with the ones. Their lack of size though will cause them to tire. A scary thought is anyone on the second team d line getting in. Not good at all. 3. JZ is right the o line looks really small. I did like the footwork of Pughsley and I think Brumbaugh is an interesting prospect. Also of note on the o line is that Clay has been moved from Center to Guard. Bohan is now at Center. Both worked with the 2's. 4. Moore looked like the same Moore from last year with a little more touch. Williams looks good in spurts but made two awful throws. If things stay like this from the upperclassmen expect to see the kid get some playing time this year. 5. Really hoping one or maybe two lb's from this years recruiting class can play right away. Both units looked bad. 6. Hoping TB can work some magic and find 5-6 juco's/grad transfers to plug the gaps. 7. Love the style of play on both sides of the ball and there was a lot of hope in the air at the big dialer yesterday

Had some time to kill so I tuned in online to listen to Zips live. KD had some really interesting things to say. Here's the summary. The team: Thinks Alex can take the next step (One of the best pg's in the country) but must take care of things outside of basketball ie; diet, and staying out too late. Would like to see the team find ways to run more. Said would like to see them become more like VCU. Thinks Rico and Q will be the go to guys next year. Mentioned Zeke needs to eat, sleep, and breath basketball to take the next step. Said it's all between his ears and he needs to live in the gym. Is confident he'll take that step. Happy with the youngsters. Thinks Harney and Tree had better freshmen years than Rome and Wood. Would like to see the one of the incoming freshmen become a stretch 4. Said a mid major really needs that to be good. Wants more consistency and more toughness with defense. Schedule: Will continue to step up in scheduling. Mentioned Detroit, Marshall, Creighton, CSU, and the trip to PR that includes Providence, Tennessee, and others. Mentioned wants to schedule up to get an at large. The arena: Mentioned that most successful mid majors are basketball only schools. If they are going to take the next step they need to raise more money and upgrade their arena. Mentioned would like to see 7k basketball only with the ability to expand if they were to get into a bigger conference. Also said he wants a section for the students on the floor even going as far to say he'd like to move some donors out and bring in the students at the JAR. Conference: Mentioned that he'd like to get into another conference to take the next step. He did say that it may not be big enough to separate them from the other mid majors schools in the state. Was very happy with the team. 4 players were never in these situations and thinks they'll be a lot better next year.

Top Five Greatest Zips MAC Tournament Games
gozips19 replied to RootforRoo44's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Been to all but the 02 game. While the championship game last year was amazing the UT game was unreal! Just thinking about all the things that took place in that game makes me shake my head. Still don't know how they won that game. Humpty Hump! -
Just to stress point 2. Akron needs to do a better job shooting from the outside. They have been poor the past two weeks shooting from 15ft out. Every team is just packing in and daring them to shoot. Akron's D and transition offense is what got them the win at Can't. Hit a few jumpers early and don't commit silly turnovers there's not a team in the MAC that can beat us.

Bad here. Had me thinking...would you rather have video that doesn't skip with no sound or sound with no video? I'd go video. Also, why does Frenchy always sound amazed when a left hander makes a left handed shot? Always makes me chuckle.
-
GP1 so what are you getting at? Sometimes you seem to say that we should just move down to FCS. Other times it's just stay in the MAC. If Akron has a chance at moving up and increasing the profile of the school (not just in athletics ) why not take it? The administration certainly is thinking that way or else they wouldn't have invested in the the campus and athletic facilities like they have in the past 15 years.

+100 Don't know what's up with Frenchy this year. Had the chance to make the game. Will just add a few things. Rico looked a little dead legged (Stealing this phrase from KD ). Shows good spurts but really tried to rest on D. This showed up time and time again on pick and rolls. He was too slow on his switch offs. In another thread a poster asked if we clinch do we sit anyone? I wouldn't sit anyone but but I would sure cut some of Rico's minuets to ensure he's fresh for the tourney. Knock about 5 mins a game off plus a week off with a bye and he should be good to go. Leadership is starting to emerge from the youngsters. Saw a great example of this with Tree during the game. In the second half Gilliam was pulled after two blown assignments (1 on offense and 1 on D ). As he came to the bench KD let him have it and Chauncey gave it right back. Coach was not happy and motioned for him to move towards the end of the bench. Chauncey got something to drink and sat back down. He then started to talk back to KD. At this point Tree (Who was sitting next to him ) had heard enough. Tree lit him up to the point Chauncey started to shake his head in agreement and stopped talking. Tree has a great presence and his teammates always speak highly of him and Harney. Can't wait to see him and Nick mature over the next 3 years. Loved Zeke's intensity last night. The person next to me said Zeke looks pissed. I happily responded with I know! Looking forward to seeing how this all plays out. This team knows they have the chance to be special. Let's hope they can pull it off.

I think that it is obvious that Akron wants to leave the MAC at any cost. They've proven to "Think bigger than the MAC" with a huge investment in a new football stadium will show their commitment again with a new arena for basketball. With wanting to up enrollment to 40k the parallels to UCF are warranted. The alliance would be a step up in football and a big step up in basketball. It raises the profile of the university and separates them from the Can't's and Ohio's of the state. If Akron has their say they'd be gone yesterday. Everyone I've talked to has been saying that for the past 5 years. The bigger question is once Akron leaves the MAC what would be needed to jump to the Big East? Can't wait to see how this all unfolds! Hoping Temple joins the Zips

You are missing three teams that will be joining the MWC next year. Nevada, Fresno, and Hawaii click me

There were a few new people I met in the AD that told me they started working on it just prior to Ianello getting fired and that coach Bowden is willing to help with any events they can plan.
-
really flat! KD is not happy. hate to be the players for the next practice that's for sure. UB student section did the I believe chant on the Zips. Rowdies should not forget this!
-
Elijah St. Hilaire decomitted according to rivals. Just went on a visit to Army.
-
WOW!!!! Didn't deserve the win but we'll take it. Thank you Harney!
-
This team is asleep at the wheel! Looking at the refs for calls....poor passes...going to the hoop soft. They don't deserve to win this game. Only thing that can save them is they are already in the 1 and 1.
-
20 points that's all we got 20????? i still think Akron wins this game as the athleticism gap between the two teams is huge! although I've always been a fan of Calhoun's game.
-
its up. now the zips need to pick it up. nice to hear the play by play by call Nik a cry baby during the break!!! real professional!
-
anyone having problems with the feed?

KD has also stated that Gilliam is better as a starter so that is why Q is coming off the bench. Just trying to get the most out of the roster. I agree that Q plays much better off the ball. When AA is on the bench Q is often the point.

It's Official -- Chuck Amato is new DC!
gozips19 replied to NewZipsFan's topic in Akron Zips Football
Great hire! Loving the staff so far. I am really curious to see Amato's salary. Paying a head coach is one thing but having the right staff in place is a must for any program. -
don't see the game on that link?
