It's not working for me. Has it started?
-
Suspect late start. Stats is up but empty.

Stats finally came on!
-
Not paying B1G 4 video! Live stats not up yet...Hmmmm.

Good luck against Cornell on Sunday. I have a favorite player on Big Red, Dempsey Banks, one of Hawaii's best players in recent years. Go Zips!
-
Woodson is now a rb?? Hope he gets to play nex'week!
-
Pretty good. Georgetown was my preseason pick to win it all this year! They haven't won one yet... Akron women win on goal with :18 to play 2-1 @ St Bonny. New coach, new era.

Does anybody know what's up with the TV coverage of this? Gozips.com is talking about "Fox Pay-Per-View Only"! I've never even heard of Fox pay-per-view. Will it be telecast on Fox Regional television for free? Oklahoma games were on free TV all last season, has that changed??

As a one-time Portlander, I am really THRILLED by the background Larry Williams brings, and his experience working with the late legendary Portland coach Clive Charles. He upgraded their facilities while at UP, and they have one of the best stadia in college soccer. And...have been hoping for a return of our men to PDX since they last played there in 2000 IIRC. Was told before Caleb's escape that we were due to play there, but so far, nothing. On that score -- I know that we have a UA soccer alum at who's home in West Portland the team stayed the last time around. I suspect I know him as a former classmate, but am not certain. Can anyone who knows the mystery (supposed software developer) ex-Zip, PM me? Thanks

FTR, I have never met George on a face-to-face basis, but have interacted with him on numerous occasions over more than a twenty-year period. George worked in the athletic department as an undergrad when the UA men's bb team first tripped to my state in the early 1990s, and from that time on I have found his overall interest and ability in working with alums thousands of miles away to have been far beyond what might have been expected -- especially in comparison to certain other AD employees who simply couldn't care enough to even return an inquiry. I hope that he will stay at the UA, because frankly he does a great job at what he's doing right now, and that is terribly important to the institution. Universities like the U of A need alumni and leaders like George van Horn. And, right now, I think the selection committee made a great choice. I look forward to Mr Williams' numerous national connections creating an upgrade to many sports programs in the coming years. Welcome aboard, Larry!

Thanks for the No-Doz Cap'n. I can tell you though, that the UA SDB are world-renowned. And he seems to know of what he speaks. Aloha pumehana from the isles.

I don't really think that all those one-and-done guys are leaving college basketball because they prefer the NBA rules, Dave! lol And, since I stopped watching those games about 40 years ago, I seriously doubt these changes will increase my interest in CBB -- but YES -- I'm afraid they ARE using women CBB players as lab rats for the "real game". smh

http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/13037928/ncaa-announces-rule-changes-2015-16-including-30-second-shot-clock-fewer-outs The shot clock change from 35 to 30 seconds is the only "major" change for the men, BUT wow ... Women's CBB is changing big time! Not JUST to four quarters, but a five personal foul bonus shooting change (back to the way it was prior to about 1975 -- help me out DiG!). And I also heard that in the women's game, all fouls in the final two minutes of the second half will be two shots.

E.J. Thomas to cease producing shows
Z.I.P. replied to Blue & Gold's topic in General UA & Campus Discussion
I talked with Jake Shimabukuro, one of the most famous musicians from my neck of the woods (okay, he might come in second to Bruno Mars, but he's still big), who has played EJ Thomas several times over the years. He would never visit a place like Akron, Ohio except that he still says the EJT is one of his favorite places, and the famous acoustics are still world class. It's a shame that the university would allow the EJT to slide into this situation -- not just that Scar guy, but the entire university. -
E.J. Thomas to cease producing shows
Z.I.P. replied to Blue & Gold's topic in General UA & Campus Discussion
Okay, been out of town for 30+ years. But...Sheesh...EJ Thomas was like the Center of Campus and school life when I was a student. All the Western Civ lectures were in there. When did they stop having classes there? Do they still have Western Civ?? lol. What buildings have replaced EJT for lecture space? -
Tell me I can't spot a star when I see one!!! Well, scoring seven goals in a four-game tournament was a quick tip-off! Ariel Lassiter made his MLS debut on Saturday vs FC Dallas, but reportedly played as well as anyone in a Galaxy kit against Barcelona last week. http://www.lagalaxy.com/post/2015/07/23/ariel-lassiter-impresses-first-team-debut-against-spanish-giants-fc-barcelona

Sabbi has been named to the roster for the US U-18 MNT for an upcoming tournament, apparently in Carson, CA (StubHub Center). http://www.topdrawersoccer.com/club-soccer-articles/u18-mnt-roster-revealed-for-ntc-tourney_aid36776

UA to begin corrosion degree program
Z.I.P. replied to g-mann17's topic in General UA & Campus Discussion
I just saw the following article on the lawsuit Ms. Louscher is waging against her employers. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2015/03/university_of_akrons_corrosion.html Does anyone have any inside info on the dynamics. Why the Hell would the dean be pissed at potentially hundreds of millions in new funding?? Must have a BIG ego! -
Too bad I tuned in to TV 5 mins after your post -- I assume it made ESPNU. Does anyone know a video of the PV comp?

Ha ha ha. Wish I could count how many times I've had people look at my A-Roo shirt, and tell me, "Go Army!"

2015 Team and Recruiting
Z.I.P. replied to malonepioneer12's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
I got a brochure about it like 6 weeks ago (I'll bet many season tix holders did too). The schedule looked pretty secure, i.e., ready to go. Sorry I didn't have an extra 10 grand sitting around. -
Well, sadly, I will not be travelling to see the Zips play again this season. I had been looking forward to a trip to Cali this year, having known since last summer about the visit to Isla Vista. But, a one-game road trip is not a worthwhile investment for Z.I.P. I wonder when the make-up game with coach Salgado's club will be. I've only been to the junk Drake Stadium once, but would enjoy returning just to see those two teams face off. Good luck to Jared and the Zips in 2015!

Sometimes you want to go home, but Home doesn't want you! Sometimes we just don't realize what's in our midst.

Another name on the list of transfers from this season is the former Walsh (and possibly Firestone??) baller, Evan Payne, who I have discussed previously. Evan intimated to me that he was indeed homesick for Akron during this season's Diamond head Classic, and I'm confident that with the type of full-court-press that occurred for Noah Robotham, this potential future NBA player could have been a Zip -- but as it ends up, Evan is "too good for the Zips." http://erichowell.sportsblog.com/posts/2072353/one_on_one_with_evan_payne.html

How about this directly from the WNIT: Quote It is based very largely upon the $$ each school bids up front (along with external forces like travel distance and expense). e.g.: My Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine played on Fri at St. Mary's. It was reported that St Mary's offered $30k to host the first round, while Hawaii offered 50k, but no travel expenses. The expense is reportedly why Hawaii will NEVER again host a WNIT game (despite hosting the first three rounds in 2000). It was also reported that the offer for the second round must be 50-100% higher than the first round (St Mary's is playing @ Fresno St.). I imagine that schools like K-State can pretty much make ends meet and a small profit from each WNIT game -- something few if any mid-major can do. And from the internet, it looked like SMC only had a few hundred fans at home. BTW -- the UA FB page reported that the Zips have never been to the post-season prior to coach Kest's arrival. Could long-time fans confirm that the first Akron WNIT game was around 1998-99? At Michigan St, IIRC.
