Agree wholeheartedly. Trying to amp up a 2,000 person crowd in a 30k stadium for a consistently poor performing team that is inevitably down 3+ scores tends to be a fool's errand. I like his passion, but it'll seem silly until we can start winning AND getting people to show up.

Class of '22 Verbal Commits
RowdyZip replied to Blue & Gold's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
Decent offer list for this kid out of HS. The defensive backfield desperately needs help, hopefully he can be an anchor for the next 3 years. Must say, I'm pretty impressed with the use of the portal by the new coaching staff thus far. -
I believe Canisius is a local rival for UB, so that might explain this result despite the difference in records. Still a crappy loss for the MAC.

Yep. This has the distinct feel of March 2020 all over again. Read recently that Cuyahoga County is the worst county in the country for new cases per 100k. I don't see how the Cavs avoid this, and I don't see how other teams across the country avoid this as we make our way through winter.

Is there really no TV for this game? What is this, 2012? Edit: per the Wright State Men's Bball site, this game will be on ESPN+. Complaint withdrawn.

Speaking for myself and my 4 usual tickets, we haven't been to a game yet. We still purchased the tickets as a show of support for UA, but I don't see myself back in-person at a game until next season. This is out of an excessive abundance of caution with two little ones and a spouse with immune issues. Probably being over-the-top, but there's still a lot nobody knows about this virus, so I don't see the point in attending when I can see a game on TV.

Looks like we'll play the whole season with an 8 man rotation. I feel like this may hurt the squad late season.

I'm watching FIU at EMU. In the 4th OT on ESPN+. No one really wants to leave. Teams have to be pushing 50 combined turnovers and shooting 35% from the field.

Press Conference Introducing Coach Moorhead (Thursday 10 am)
RowdyZip replied to Dr Z's topic in Akron Zips Football
Absolutely. Now the question is if he sticks around for 13 years and wins 9-10 games a year with bowl games and MAC Championship contention every year, will there be a segment of fans that want him gone because we haven't won a game in the College Football Playoff? -
Let me preface with I think the flexibility of the portal is necessary and the right thing to do for the kids. Where it may hurt G5s is with developing star talent and keeping them onboard for 4/5 years, essentially turning G5 into minor leagues for P5 on occasion. Biggest downside I can see here is the connection to the fans. Bringing guys in from the portal is great, but most often those will be 1-2 year guys. I think we'll miss out on the development/attachment of some guys, like we saw back in the glory days (for me as an undergrad) with folks like Charlie Frye, Bobby Hendry, Dennis Kennedy. I think a lot of guys will have an attachment to the program, but others will have a big first year, like Mumpfield, and pull P5 offers and be out the door. Will his skills and success translate? Maybe. Or he'll find himself on the pine when he could've been starring here. Hoping coach puts that bug in his ear. A lot of kids will bet on themselves to be a star on the bigger stage, and that's fine. It should be their choice to have.

Indiana and Syracuse as well.

I wouldn't hate next year's schedule if it wasn't in a coaching transition year. It would take some real magic from this staff to pull off wins on any of the 3 roadies. I think Liberty could still be a winnable game in year one (35% chance), Tennessee too (5%), with a minor miracle. I just really, really....REALLY hope we're not going into the MAC season at 1-3, because that will certainly tamp down some of the local enthusiasm.

Was sifting through some recruiting stuff while on lunch today. Discovered Adante ended up committing to the Mighty Vaqueros of Rio Grande Valley State. Not sure what happened, but sure is strange a 4* kid with offers from Akron, Arizona, Ole Miss, Arizona State, Tulsa and handful of others, ends up at a low major that has finished with a record above .500 exactly 4 times in the last 30 years. Coincidentally, RGVS was also the home of former Zips Coach Dan Hipsher from 2013-2016 where he amassed a less than stellar 27-66 (.290) record.

I'm trying to think about how excited I was when we hired Terry Bowden in order to temper my expectations for Coach Joe. It isn't working.
-
Duquesne plays in Huntington tomorrow vs the Herd. Those on the board that like to chastise Akron's winningest coach may want to take a look to do a comparison.
-
Had this same thought earlier this week when things started to point to Moorhead being a "done deal". I think the difference between the Bowden hire and this one are more considerable than just past records. Joe Moorhead will be coming into Akron a decade younger and with a reputation for innovation, especially on the offensive side of the ball. Terry Bowden, while still a quality coach for UA, relies more on his name recognition and more traditional, old-school offensive and defensive sets. My hope with Joe is that he'll come in and maximize the talent we have and add an infusion of talent from the portal. I hope we'll see creativity and have the personnel to execute it effectively. No more delayed handoffs on 3rd and 11.

Very familiar to our squad.
-
I wondered this as well. Wynn played briefly (1st half, I believe) and promptly blew a defensive assignment leading to a wide open transition 3. Don't think we saw him again. I don't think Bandaogo play led at all in the 2nd half, meaning we operated with a 7 man rotation. I don't think that'll cut it through the grind of the season. One more injury or defection would wipe us out.
-
I will be back as well. I hate to ASS U ME this is a done deal, but this shows me that UA wants my support and wants to win. That has not been evident for quite a few seasons. Can we even buy 2022 Season Tickets yet? Better get that ticketmaster issue fixed!
-
We were relevant? But seriously, I'm salivating at the thought of winning 8/9/10 games a season. Can you imagine: Going to Infocision Stadium on a Saturday afternoon and EXPECTING to leave happy? Completely blows me away. Now I understand that the hire needs to be finalized, and Coach will have to have unprecedented success within the program, but this hire would be approximately 3,495,635,312.55x better than Tom Arth. Also...the 3-24 record with Coach Arth's salary breaks down to >$500k per FBS win in his 3 years. Ouch.
-
As much as I dislike Debbie Downer's post, they have a point. If Moorhead is the guy, this could potentially be the last gamble on FBS for Akron. If he doesn't manage to turn things around, I honestly can't see The U digging deeper in the pockets for another buyout/new coach in a few years.
-
We better get some news soon, or this thread may push 50 pages. Who is going to post the "Welcome Coach Moorhead" thread?
-
FWIW, Footballscoop dot com posted this link breaking the news of Arth joining UA on 12/14, and the University announced it later that day. They posted this link earlier this morning, playing off the other rumors and adding a sentence that the deal could be done today. The excitement is certainly at a higher level...let's hope it's not all smoke and mirrors to drum up interest.
-
I highly doubt this. No way you could tell 100 college kids who their new coach is and not have anyone "leak" it, especially kids like Gibson that have entered the portal. Then again, a friend pointed out that Oregon does have 4 freshman QBs on their roster, so...maybe....
-
No idea what the rules are with contracts and the regular season coming to a close, but IF these rumors are true, I couldn't be happier to welcome Coach Moorhead back, or even the guy from O$U. Both would give immediate credibility to a program where even most of us fans were wondering what kind of candidates would be drawn to this job. I am through the roof with optimism. Don't ruin this for me, UA.
