Good question. As young as we are now, I still see Nik as the guy. Down the road, I think Brian Walsh can be that guy. Maybe Rico too, he's already been a big influence on the PR pipeline with Bentancourt and has the fire to lead. Just needs to be a bit more heady on the floor. Ideally, the point guard would be the best position to keep things settled and on point.

BS call in the box on the corner kick. Ref has no business waving off that goal. A foul occurs on nearly every corner made in every game. He has to let them play, especially given the magnitude of this game. A big BS on that one unless an obvious off side or hand ball that we couldn't see

I agree, but with some caution and guarded optimism. The good news is that we are deep and very fortunate to have the ability to slip Q into the 1 position. I would love to see Walsh handle the duties but it's just not to be yet. I love our bench and that can be our saving grace. Also, the Beacon Journal seemed to not know that Detroit's very, very good forward Nick Minerath went down at the BG tourney with a knee and he's done for the year. Also, as I am sure that many of you know, Their center Eli Holman is suspended. He was the preseason pick for the Horizon's player of the year. Soph Bruinsma did a great job in Minnerath's place up in BG but the fact remains that Detroit's bench is very, very short on quality and bodies. That's our edge, even without Rico tonight. If I were KD, I'd run, run and run some more. Detroit has not been defending well and this will get into their bench. Playing slow in the half court would probably allow the Titans to stay close. With Minnerath and Holman, Detroit would have had a great team this year, without the two studs and on the road they should be defeated by 10+ pts

Streaming for UofA vs Valpo / Duquense
The Hip Zip replied to dboze's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
MAC Sports will be streaming the game on Saturday @ Akron vs Duquense Live Stream 11/19 The funny thing is the stream does not show up on the schedule for later today. Sure hope it is on. Think you're out of luck. Mac Sports only streams from conference venues as far as I have seen. -
we're a 3 pt dog. Might have to invest my lunch money on the Zips tonight. I think they come out of the locker room breathing fire.

" integrity of the game": I couldn't help to think that If Phil McKnight saw this game he would have had to have been escorted out. God rest his soul.

Nope. We choked. Guys tried to win the game themselves rather than play team ball for the last 4 minutes. That cost us the game. The new guys and the semi-new-guys that are now seen as leaders need to learn from what happened tonight. Then we're fine. If we don't learn from it, then we'll struggle. Not against the MAC West, but against good competition. And in road games. Good post. I was thinking that if we take something out of this and learn a bit, this one loss could get us two victories later when we need them the most. I follow the MAC officials a bit and have never seen this crew before. Hopefully never again. They make Larry Scirotto look great Brad Gaston, Bert Smith, William Jacobson

BTW: The Duquesne Dukes hung 97 on their opponent tonight. This should be an entertaining game

I see your point. The two situations were nearly identical right ? Good one.

I agree here. no, but it's his job to organize a better play. At least one of those two times. I have no problem with the final two play calls. ball screens for your guards was the only play working all night. Nitro didn't have anything and he forced it. The play to end the game you put the ball in Q's hands. We've seen him win games like this in the tourney. He makes a go for broke bad decision and we take a L. That's on the players not the coach. uh, Keith can't coach poise in the middle of crunch time. I'll go ahead and say it, we flat out choked in the final minutes
-
Right on the money. Nitro's been here four years, he hustles and tries his heart out. We all get that but if he's not our best 2 guard he needs to sit a few more minutes. I believe we have 2 guys that would be better than #5 at the 2 spot.
-
no they are awful. they never deserved to be in this game Valpo is not awful. They may look awful with their ugly ass style of play the Drew's instill in them year-after-year, but I've seen them do this to YSU numerous times! Ever since they joined the Horizon League, every game against YSU has been like this, only we are in Akron's shoes and blow it vs. them every time! Valpo will probably fight for 4th place in the Horizon. They are a decent team and that Broekoff kid was very impressive on both ends of the floor.
-
Ditto on most of the above. Just an awful homer job but we still had a good chance to walk out with a win with just a little bit of offensive execution in the final 3 minutes. Why #5 is on the floor so much defies rational thinking. I really thought only Tree played well tonight.

RIP Phil, you had the heart of a lion and I was fortunate to get to know you. I'll never forget the BG game up at their place because of you. -
When is the deadline to register? I'm in Chicago for a week and my return date is iffy at this point. Would love to go and meet some of you.

I was very happy to see Can't take it to Thuggins. Great for our RPI when we beat W Va and Can't twice down the road. I was very impressed by Can't's guard play but I think their depth is suspect. While Greene is a stud and newcomer Evans can play, I feel that we will have an edge in the paint with Zeke and our depth at the 3-4 positions. It may not be a bad match up at all for us. Go MAC Go Zips !

Zips Ranking in Mid-Major Top 25
The Hip Zip replied to Dave in Green's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Duke 77, Belmont 76 Duke avoids upset loss It's easy to have tunnel vision when just keeping track of the local teams. There is more parody in college hoops than ever IMO. With only so many scholarships to give many quality kids slip through the cracks for what ever reason. The Belmont score was not a major surprise for many that follow the game closely. -
Much appreciated Dave, I have to check the schedule and may will do it. I'm in Chicago for a week or so around Thanksgiving so it all boils down as to when I may get back. I'll miss the Detroit game for sure which I do not like one bit .

Diggs Named East Divison Player of the Week

The thing I love about Q is how he finishes. He mad a couple of real ankle breakers on MSU defenders driving one on one. -
It's a start

None of the rest of us are that old to remember that song. You will have to go this one by yourself. I had an opportunity to work with Humpty, as well as Chris McKnight and Jimmy Conyers, speaking to inner city 3rd graders. Humpty was great,he was engaging and motivating and the kids just loved him. the best part was that Humpty did it all with a bright smile on his face. You could tell he really enjoyed it. I'm happy for his success and I'll never say one bad word about him. The same goes to Chris and Jimmy as well, they were all just super.

Keeping tabs on the Zips non-conference opponents

If you think that's crazy, as a college hoops junkie I made all but a 2 hour block last year. The high octane coffee is in the basket, ready to brew. Both the Detroit game tonight as well as the Flushes/Thuggins matchups are intriguing. All three teams have a shot of being very, very good. Keep in mind that the Titans are playing tonight without their center and I still think that they win. Minnerath is one of my favorite players. He's 6'8" with great outside touch and yet enough muscle to handle the 4 spot. -
