  1. I'd just take the entire team and walk out in protest. This is disgusting.
  2. I'm at a loss for words right now... Have these guys ever officiated a basketball game before? Or are they the referees from last night's MAACO Bowl?
  3. Reggie Johnson's fat @ss broke the basket. Wow. Shouldn't that be a technical on them for hanging on the rim?
  4. Brett McKnight is a one man wrecking crew.
  5. You are certainly in the minority there. 1) LeBron is NOT honorary alumi 2) Akron Zips was trending on Twitter BEFORE LeBron's tweet...it's not like we were lacking national attention 3) LeBron doesn't give a shit about Akron...don't be fooled LeBron put out a tweet about something positive that UA did. That's really cool. I'm celebrating something our school achieved, something to be dead proud of, and you're whining about the fact that cleveland used to have a basketball team? Take your sour grapes somewhere else my friend. I'm celebrating AKRON SOCCER! LeBron is celebrating too, and I think that is expletive great. Oh, and I'm not in the minority, Akronites support one another, we have a really great community here, it's that kind of "at home" feeling that you don't find in many urban areas, and I love Akron because it is a place that is tolerant and accepting of all people. And rooting for our own with that kind of unabashed mid-western pride that you can't find anywhere else is a very unique and rare thing. It's unfortunate that cleveland's sour grapes about the cavaliers last chance at a national championship are getting in the way of some when Akron's Men's Soccer just brought a National Championship home. If you want to go worship Danny 'Subprime' Gilbert' somewhere else, be my guest. AKRON SOCCER RULES, AKRON SOCCER IS KING! I'm glad LeBron put a tweet out about it, our soccer team is F***ing AWESOME! If you have sour grapes about LeBron's former basketball team, please email them to Danny subrpime gilbert, UAZip0510. Akron soccer probably doesn't care that you're mad danny gilbert's team can't win anymore without LeBron James. I'm done with this. GO ZIPS! GO ZIPS SOCCER! In the spirit of this post UAZip0510, let's just celebrate something amazing that our team did and leave it at that. Lets just support Akron! Hail Akron! I love my city and the people of my city! And with that, I'm extending an olive branch here.. to any and all, lets just keep supporting all of this as best we can.
  6. cleveland has a basketball team still? even if they did, no one in Akron cares. But I do know AKRON HAS A SOCCER TEAM! AND THEY ARE AMAZING! GO AKRON! LETS KEEP CELEBRATING AKRON'S CHAMPIONS! LEBRON IS AN AKRONITE SO JUST QUIT WITH THE SOUR GRAPES. LETS JUST CELEBRATE AKRON SOCCER! THEY DESERVE IT! :NCAAC:
  7. Thanks for the pic R4R, that's gonna live on forever in Akron lore. Also, I've wanted to use this just once in my lifetime and have it actually be true... :NCAAC: AKRON IS THE BEST TEAM IN THE NATION! NO ONE IS BETTER THAN THE UNIVERSITY OF AKRON!!! Oh, and btw
  8. Thank you for posting that meatwad, it was just amazing to see such a celebration after a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP! Also, I'm in the skhorbotly camp. I've met TW for a brief passing second and he really did seem genuine. Lets just enjoy this, this team deserves all the credit in the world for what they've accomplished! Akron is brimming with pride right now! This is an accomplishment that lends hope and optimism to the entire community! GO AKRON! GO ZIPS! SHOUT IT FROM THE ROOFTOPS!
  9. Very cool. I think the mood around the community is one of complete celebration. Well, I can vouch for University Park anyway. GO ZIPS! GO LEBRON! GO AKRON! SOCCER KINGS!
  10. Barley House should have a few local brews on tap. I went Saturday before the soccer game for a bit as they were the only place that had X-mas Ale on tap, so they should at least still have that and probably GL Dortmunder. Barley House used to have Roo Brew on tap earlier this summer. I haven't been there since so I really don't know if they still offer it. As far as Thirsty Dog's "12 Dogs of Christmas" goes, I have no idea. I haven't even been able to find it in stores. I saw some stocked at the grocery store almost 2 months ago and now I regret not grabbing it, haha. (I'm a craft beer kind of person too). If I end up heading to a bar to watch, it will probably be Tap House. I'm skeptical about Barleys as a good place to watch Zips games.
  11. Awesome post ZRifle. As another one of the 500 or so people at the game yesterday, I couldn't have been happier for the graduating members of the team to finally get a hard earned W. Keep fighting. Never give in.
  12. I think that this response is both an appropriate and necessary one. I agree with Dr Z's statement that "hatred' (dislike in sports anyway, as true, real life hatred is never justified) can get too ugly. I don't think anyone needs to be reminded of the guy wearing Miami Heat gear at the Indians game this summer. Even worse, I actually saw a car with some dumb 20 something white "kid" with a LeBron jersey dragging from the back of his trunk just after LeBron decided to go to Miami. That made me absolutely sick. I think this goes far beyond just having a rival in professional sports. I think there are some idiots out there, like this guy, that actually took LeBron's decision personally. Heck, I'd rather be a Duke fan in the middle of a bunch of North Carolina students, sure I know I'd take it from them but I doubt I would feel any sort of threat of physical violence. But with just plain disgusting statements, such as the one that kid made with that jersey hanging from his car, it is very apparent that there are some people out there who don't seem to understand that basketball is just a game, especially at the professional level where personnel is shifted, traded, and changed virtually all season for the sake of the all mighty dollar. The NBA NEEDED to make absolutely sure that cleveland takes every measure of caution when the Heat come to the Q arena. Most people are reasonable, but unfortunately it only takes one to ruin everything for everyone, both fans and players.
  13. It seems kind of wrong to me too. How sad. I don't care if you love LeBron, hate him, or don't even know what basketball is, that had absolutely no redeeming educational value whatsoever. The only thing that skit taught those children was how to condemn and denigrate another person. What was their teacher thinking, other than "I'm mad at LeBron James"? I do like the part where the one little boy encourages the other after he stumbled on his line though. Leave it to the children to teach the right lesson...
  14. You've hit the nail right on the head, Dave. Good post.
  15. You took the words right out of my mouth. How big is not having Brett McKnight right now? If Brett isn't going to be able to play this season, although hopefully he can at some point, I agree that Coach Dambrot is going to have to feed some of the new guys to the wolves. Let 'em play and work through the inexperience and hopefully they can get acclimated to playing in college. At least that gives us a shot at some significant depth by MAC Tourney time, or optimistically even by the beginning of conference play.
  16. Well, at least I think we can all agree that tonight's attendance was pathetic. I know I'm merely preaching to the choir on this message board, but attendance of a whopping 2,716 at a school of roughly 30,000 students, for a premiere mid major match up like this? You've got to be kidding me. The student body's support of this team is a freaking joke.
  17. What makes one the Pat Nicely of Journalism per se? Is it completing around 40% of your stories? Writing some for a rival paper a couple times a year (comparable to an INT)? Or is it knowing that there's a reserve that should at least get a chance instead of you? Having untalented readers (receivers) around you? Having a poor editor (coach)? I'm not making the connection here... My apologies to Mr. Hixenbaugh. . . After thinking back a little ways, it was actually another columnist that some of us were not a fan of because the column was pretty unoriginal most weeks, Mike was just the most recognizable face from the Buchtelite at that time I think. Anyway.. I know that many members of the Buchtelite staff have worked very hard to put their best product out there. The connection (for me anyway) is that when I was an undergrad at ol' UA, The Buchtelite showed a lot of promise with some very good columns, but now it seems like it has really been lacking the creativity and passion that once was there. The comparison to Pat was just that many people around the MAC were keyed up last season about how good Pat could be, but this year has been somewhat of a letdown (like the Buchtelite recently). I'm just hoping that both The Buchtelite and Pat meet or exceed their potential in the years to come. I really didn't want to come off as being totally negative about young writers. They need all the encouragement they can get, believe me, I was once one of them. I've just become old and bitter I guess. Also, I think you're doing a good job with ASN R4R. UA athletics can use all of the attention they can get. You're definitely doing your part for UA sports. I know you guys have been covering the city series and then some during football season, but I was wondering if you'd be doing the same for hoops? Lots of basketball talent in this area too!
  18. Mike Hixenbaugh? The Pat Nicely of Journalism? No thanks. The Buchtelite desperately suffered terribly after Kadar and Rasor.
  19. LeBron Donates 1,000 Computers to Akron Public Schools Not sure if this has been posted already, but like him or dislike him, you have to admit that's a genuinely nice thing to do for a school system that can really use the help.
  20. Thanks for posting the link!
  21. Anyone notice that our 12/22 opponent, Stetson, beat Wake Forest to open their season?
  22. Just change "Bouncing Souls" to "Akron Zips" Ole, Ole, Ole, Ole... (Akron Zips) no one can beat us we drink beer and wear adidas anywhere we get the itch we're off to find a proper pitch Lace your sambas get on out off we go to kick it about Win or lose we're having fun we won't quit until we're done We got heart when we play Take you on any day! The Bouncing Souls always get me amped up while heading to Zips' soccer games! Hopefully that continues all the way up to the championship and beyond!
  23. My thoughts exactly. I typically just type them into that Google machine.
  24. Ummmm. . . Yeah, totally. . . That was really perceptive? That makes sense given your emboldened words. . . Hint: "whoever knows WHAT that quote came from."
  25. I know that I've been as critical of Ianello as anyone, but I actually think I've come full circle at this point and after some observations I'm in the camp that Ianello needs more than one season to prove himself. Here's why: After ten weeks into the season, observing everything that has gone on, including Ianello's reactions to the losses, the numbers of players either quitting or being removed from the team and if there is even the slightest shred of truth to the content of both his and AD Wistrcill's interviews with the media, it leads me to believe one thing: I believe that they absolutely expected the season we're having. I think probably starting with Rob's interview for the coaching position he had it outlined in his "master plan" of building/re-building Akron football that he was just going to have to implode the entire thing and start from scratch. Sure, I bet Rob thought it probably would have been great if we could have won 3 or 4 games along the way, but this season is a result of the radical changes (both off the field and schematically on the field) and weeding out of whatever undesirable aspects Ianelllo felt still remained as part of the program. (just look at some of the talent in key positions that has vacated). I think he absolutely saw this coming and from what I've observed as far as his expectations of the players, their conduct, their academics, their respect for the community and the resulting mass exodus of players from the team, I think that goes a long way in supporting this hypothesis. The guy just isn't going to tolerate players that are unwilling to respect his rules and maybe those guys just couldn't hack it as far as what his demands are. Maybe that's a good thing? Take Senior Linebacker Mike Thomas's comments from the Fanhouse article (link posted in thread previous). - Mike said players had to adjust, but he said he respects Ianello's approach because it will help in the long run: "Having a strict system that we have to abide by every day," Thomas said "That's going to help out a lot. That's something that we kind of didn't have before. ... (Is he) tougher? Yes. Demanding? Yes. That's just his style. I respect him. I respect that." I also think that Ianello is really looking toward Al Golden as far as what he is trying to "build" here. After 10 weeks of suffering through this garbage I'll leave you all with this: "Well, you know what my dad always said, having dreams is what makes life tolerable." Ten "scene/fan" points to whoever knows what that quote came from. Hint: I'll be taking a road trip to that college town for a football game this weekend while the zips are on their 11 day "bye week" or whatever. I'm actually pretty stoked, as the Zips have never given me occasion to travel to this historic stadium. See y'all at the Basketball home opener on Friday!
