  1. Big Deal. LOL... Nagbe and Mattocks are Timbers teammates, but they were also Zips teammates.
  2. I had hoped by now that UA would be selling vintage Jason Taylor #33 Zips jerseys for those who want to go to Canton and show Zips Pride during the HoF induction. What was I thinking? Oh well, I will be out of town and unable to go anyway. Let me thank those who are going in advance for representing UA well! I think JT will appreciate your being there.
  3. ...A ten-man New York City side found themselves deadlocked at zeroes with the Fire at halftime, reliant upon the pace and relentlessness of Lewis and captain David Villa to stretch the Chicago defense and break the mounting pressure. A flurry of goals would come just a few minutes into the second frame, including two for the good guys. Lewis found himself directly involved in one, and his speed on the wings helped create the other. Through his 72 minutes, the rookie provided a release valve for the pressure the Fire were able to create by virtue of their extra man, made quick decisions on the ball, and popped up in plenty of dangerous spots. ...
  4. So awesome that the only two former Zips on 2017 Gold Cup squads have both made it to the finals. Zips' and Timbers' teammates, incredible. USA all the way, of course!!!
  5. Rookie winger Jonathan Lewis will make his first start for NYCFC today as they take on the Chicago Fire at Yankee Stadium. Lewis last featured for NYCFC back in June, playing the final 12 minutes of their late comeback victory over the Philadelphia Union and causing plenty of trouble down the flank. The SuperDraft pick out of Akron is part of a lineup that features three changes made by Head Coach Patrick Vieira for this double game week. ...
  6. CONGRATULATIONS to Ezana Kahsay who recently got his US citizenship! (story ~2 minutes into video) http://www.erienewsnow.com/clip/13506530/erie-sports-now-wednesday-july-19th?utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter_ErieNewsNow
  7. Always like hearing from Scott Caldwell, the man who scored the 2010 National Championship Game-winning goal!
  8. Happy for him, but this hurts...
  9. Kudos to @TennZip for pointing me to this article... https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2017/07/10/boehm-future-finally-now-darren-mattocks Great article. Favorite sentence: "He was the leading scorer for Caleb Porter’s 2010 Akron Zips side as they won the NCAA national championship."
  10. Not if it is against Arkansas Pine Bluff, Malone, Coppin State, Bethune Cookman, ... The same schedule that keeps the Zips from getting at large NCAA Tourney berths also does not excite people to show up.
  11. Good/bad, you can put me on the list. I've only had season tix since 2006, because I lived out of state from graduation in the late 80's - 98 and for other reasons after my return. I was passionate about it for sometime and even thought building Infocision was the thing to do. But, then iCoach and reality set in. I was hopeful for a pick up with TB, but that was a one-season event. I have a season ticket again for the upcoming season, but it is the lowest-priced ticket, and I don't anticipate using it much, if at all, and definitely not in November. Not only does the product stink, but it is not even on a day/time that makes it slightly fun (to me).
  12. It's not exclusive to Akron. I had a UAB alum come over to me when I was at UAB for an Akron-UAB soccer match...he asked me if I got tired of folks showing up to our games wearing tOSU stuff. When I asked why he was asking me, he said he hated folks showing up to UAB events wearing Alabama or Auburn stuff. Of course we commiserated on the subject.
  13. Amazing match last night. Stars of that show were 1.FC Cincy fans (incredible crowd) and 2. FC Cincy GK Hildebrandt...numerous outstanding saves during the run of play and 3 PK saves, WOW! FC Cincy moves on to the quarterfinals in the USOC. What a great statement on national television for FC Cincy. Aodhan Quinn played 120 minutes. Eric Stevenson played 66. http://www.cincinnati.com/story/sports/soccer/fc-cincinnati/2017/06/29/doc-after-fc-cincy-fire-have-we-found-team-good-karma/438747001/ ...The game drew 32,287, the second-best crown in Open Cup history. The game was a blast, start to finish, as compelling as a nil-nil affair can be. The home team concocted an upset. Nip-It Stadium at night is as telegenic as it gets. The home crowd was typically and defiantly rowdy, for two and a half hours. Your move, MLS. ...

  15. DEFENDER: Shane Wiedt, Erie Commodores Why: The University of Akron defender has formed such a solid partnership with Guillermo Lazcano that it's difficult to determine who's been more valuable in a back line that's permitted just two goals in six matches. Wiedt is a modern center back in his sheer athleticism, 6'3 frame and strong dose of nastiness; the former AFC Cleveland back's play is reminiscent of the old rugged Erie Admirals squads. Honorable mention defenders: Jack Webber, Fort Pitt; Matthew McDyer, Fort Pitt; Jake Schindler, Rochester; Guillermo Lazcano, Erie; Chris Cvecko, AFC Cleveland. FORWARD: Ezana Kahsay, Erie Commodores Why: Finding a position has been tough for Kahsay, a native of Eritrea who played his high school soccer in the city of Buffalo. The supreme athlete with a fierce competitive streak got noticed and signed by superpower Akron, then spent the first three years of his college career making the transition from defense to midfield to forward. As it turns out, Kahsay has finally found his form as a striker, leading the Great Lakes East in goals (six in just six games) and tormenting opposing defenses with his relentlessness and improved composure in front of goal. He tends to find the back of the net in bunches, too, scoring a brace against Dayton and then a hat-trick against Fort Pitt.
