  1. Another day, another article about a certain UA administrator. I am glad that the reports are that he's enthusiastic and full of ideas. He could be a nice shot in the arm for a university administration that's become fairly stagnant and uncreative when it comes to engaging students and alumni.
  2. It doesn't affect me, so I don't really care about LeBron or the Heat. I am concerned about the effect on the league, though. I hope that it doesn't inspire an exodus from the small markets and make an uninteresting league even less interesting. Who wants a four team league with a bunch of non-competitive cupcakes as schedule filler? LeBron would be fine with it, I imagine. After all, he spent his entire childhood pretending he was from three of the four major US cities (NYC, Dallas, Chicago) instead of actually being from Akron. Add in Los Angeles and there you go.
  3. Perception often lags about 10 years behind reality. I'm sure that whoever came up with the idea to use the RB still thinks of it as it was during the Lee Owens years. Most people in Akron not familiar with the situation think much the same. Even a cursury inspection should dispell that belief. Fixing the Rubber Bowl would cost more than the entire value of the team they hope to bring here.
  4. Most people don't use it, but if you have a Google account then you have a profile, so sign on and follow Zips Athletics. Zips Athletics on Google+
  5. Not at this point. But in a few years, shouldn't we be in that position?
  6. Articles on recruits? I like it! You see stuff like this for some schools around the NCAA where the newspaper or a radio station go out and interview recruits. Thank you.
  7. Apparently it's classless to not hope your rival does well at your own program's expense. At least that what I've been told.
  8. I don't recall any articles about how Can't fans put us down when we were making championship runs (Actual championship runs, not Elite Eight elimination games) in soccer. But I would bet any amount of money that far more than a third of their fans were rooting as hard as they could for us to fail, regardless of the benefit to the MAC.
  9. Is it easier to win the MAC at Akron or to finish in the A-10's top four at Duquesne? I say Akron.
  10. You beat me to it, but I didn't see that article when I posted. Maybe the mods can combine the threads? Like I said, it feels good to beat Can't and a Big East team (Temple) with the first recruit. Hopefully a sign of things to come. Cut From the other thread Coach Bowden got his first recruit of the 2013 class today, ATH Zach Guiser from Greensburg, PA. Scout profile Rivals profile ESPN profile Scouting PA profile w/ highlight tape Had offers from Temple, Can't State, and Buffalo. Feels good to beat out both a Big East school and Can't with the first recruit.

  12. Your source sounds smart. It may or may not be Pohl that starts, but so many talented QBs are freshmen this season.
  13. They're getting more media coverage for getting to the CWS than for their Elite 8 run in basketball.
  14. The Big 33 was played today, and there were a couple Akron recruits participating. On the Ohio side, Arlington McClinton played on the DL alongside a previously unknown walk-on recruit, Rahkim Johnson out of Cincinnati Elder. Here is an article on Rahkim that we somehow missed. Coach Bowden's walk-on class keeps getting more and more impressive. I believe a lack of height was the main reason this recruit missed out on a D-I scholarship, but he seems perfect to play at a hybrid DE/LB position. Regardless, making the Big 33 roster is a sign that he has some talent.
  15. More students are downtown on game nights than at the JAR. They live closer to downtown than to the JAR, and there's no need to shuttle anyone anywhere.
  16. So where do you think supporting businesses will begin to pop up at if we build next to the JAR?
  17. I agree with ASN's take that the Ianello gang ruined football for him. It's sad to see.
  18. Isn't being able to bring in more fans, the kind of fans factors in those kind of things into their decision (that group includes most students who are concerned about their social lives and where to hang out later that night) "whats best" for UA? What's the benefit to having an arena that fits nicely within some map if it means less people will show up? Why do you think the football stadium was built on Exchange street on a lot that wasn't even on campus instead of the wastelands of the north part of campus?
  19. If we could just airlift Dayton's arena up to Akron, we would be set for the next 40 years.
  20. Have you been to a game? Greeks only show up once a year, on Greek night, and only then because they are forced to. Residents show up just enough to fill a few rows of seating. Our core fan base is alumni and the students that live in off-campus housing across from campus (in many ways they are more loyal, numerous, and better fans than most residents). Clearly. Downtown Akron today has taken many steps towards becoming an oversized college town. All the bars on Main Street are college bars, many of the people walking around during the day are students. Most of the negative element that used to dominate the area has relocated outward, to the south and west. Yes, it has to be convenient and alluring to students, and to anybody else who might want to come. Putting it where the JAR currently stands is neither of those things. There's nowhere to go before or after the game, it's not easy to get to for residents ("on campus" doesn't mean squat if it's the opposite side of campus from 80% of your residents, who live closer to downtown than to Route 8). Things have changed. Big time. And I hope you don't form your opinion on where an arena should go based on 50-year old knowledge of the area. I'm for the corner of Spicer and Exchange, across from Subway. It's close enough to the the restaurants on Exchange that it makes a trip to the game more attractive, it's not any more difficult to get to for students than where the JAR sits now, and Lot 9 provides better parking than the JAR has. Downtown is the second option. There are things to do, and it's the closest to the students. Ask any current student whether it's easier for most on-campus and near-campus students to get to where the JAR is now or to a location across from Canal Park and almost all of them will say Canal Park. The worst option is to built over or next to the JAR. Location is as much of a reason for our attendance problems as the actual facility.
  21. UA receives wetlands in Copley
  22. There is absolutely no benefit to Akron if Can't continues to win. Why would I root for them, then?
  23. Official statement from Conference USA saying that they are still expanding.
  24. ...well? How was it?
