Roster spot in jeopardy?

I'm watching a different Jerome Lane than you. The one that I watch helps stretch the defense by catching long passes. A 42 yarder in Oklahoma, and 50 yarder this week. He also had another long one down the sidelines go out of his hands in the rain against Pitt. I thought he telegraphed that one a little early and gave the defender a chance get his hands on his arms. He will learn to disguise it better with more reps. I love his separation and strength. He is not polished at the position, but I think he makes our team better when he is on the field. His position change this year also suggests he is a team player.

Congrats to Blue & Gold, Hilltopper, zipsoutsider, MDZip, Glib Shanley, skip-zip, Jrship35, SeeTeeZip, lance99 who correctly voted that Thomas Woodson would have the most completions Saturday. a-zip was the only one to correctly predict the offense would account for six or more touchdowns. The offense was more productive than the the majority of Zips fans thought possible. After the Zips defense shut down the Tigers, and the offense exploded for seven touchdowns, can Zip fans express some pride and optimism this week? Other quick thoughts: • The Tigers made an effort all game long to get the ball out of the QB's hand quickly to avoid the pressure. I think this accounted for many of their mishandled snaps. • I like a lot of what I saw from the receivers yesterday. If someone can get the ball consistantly to Jerome Lane, he will be an offensive weapon that will only help balance our offense which has been arguably one dimensional at times early on. • I read (and hear) a lot of Zip fans remarking how this offense was built for a single player. I don't really buy it. How is it that another player is executing that system more efficiently in every aspect? When new offenses are installed, there is a trial and error period, I'm guessing a lot of positive plays are moved to the front of the call sheet, and some getting moved down. I'm hoping the offense gets more efficient each week. Getting the proper personnel as many snaps as possible will help the execution too. • Newman Williams did a lot of positive things yesterday. • I hope Coe is back next week. He does a lot to cause chaos along the line even when he is not "in" on the play.

Zips Stay Focused. There is such a thing as being too confident, and that’s what the Zips will have to avoid. “We just have to take it just like it’s another game,” linebacker Dylan Evans said. “They’re going to come here and try to win just like we went to Oklahoma and tried to win. We’ve just got to give them respect, and say that they’re a good football team, and play it like we know how to play and I think everything will turn out all right.” For fellow senior linebacker Jatavis Brown, there is a stark reality. “Being 0-2, I don’t think you could be overconfident,” he said.

Jatavis Brown had a career-high 16 tackles, and 2.5 sacks against Pitt. He is fifth in the nation in total sacks this year.

I'm looking forward to seeing if all the below is true. I'm not sure about everything else, but the weight loss was obvious to me in the spring. I might be in the minority, but I like Woodson's potential, especially if he has worked on the things coach speaks of. “You have to get two guys getting reps. Woodson’s getting a lot of reps,” Bowden said. “There’s a lot of things when you’re dealing with Woodson. He’s had a lot more at-bats with things we do than Tra’Von Chapman, but it gives us two guys who are at least probably more similar in the way they do things.” Woodson, like Chapman, has the ability to pass and run the ball, and in the time since he struggled as a starter when Pohl was injured last season, Bowden has noticed a difference with Woodson. “He hasn’t had a chance to show the maturity that he has,” Bowden said. “Last year, he was a redshirt freshman starter and there were times we were in games at halftime and we made the first mistake. “We made the first turnover. We made the first mistake offensively. And that’s what you’re hoping you’ll see from him, some maturity from that standpoint that he understands sometimes it’s OK to force something or try to make something happen.” Bowden said that along with that confidence, Woodson’s maturity shows in his loss of about 30 pounds.

Q was the man in that game. I had high hopes for him after that. That game was mid week on a channel I'm not sure I got at the time. I had to go "out" to watch.

Savannah State is 0-1 after a 65-13 loss at Colorado State on Sept. 5. The Tigers had a bye last week. After one game, junior RB Richard Williams leads the rushers with 73 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. Under center, sophomore QB Tino Smith is 6-of-14 for 50 yards. Freshman WR Nicholas Carrera and sophomore WR Derek Kirkland are the top receivers with two catches for 17 yards each. Defensively, freshman DB Isiah Bennett has 10 tackles and a forced fumble. In the NCAA FCS stats, the Tigers lead the nation in red zone offense (1.000). They are also ranked No. 3 in turnover margin (3.00) and fumbles recovered (4.0), and No. 22 in fourth down conversions (0.667). Individually, junior PK John Barron is the national leader in field goal percentage (1.000), and No. 2 in field goals per game (2.00). If there were a QB performing at a high level, this would be the case. When a QB delivers the ball accurately and on time, most offensive schemes have success. If you don't have a QB that can do that...well, I can come up with a pretty simplistic defense to make you punt. I think coach is looking for someone at the position to step up.

Peterman replaced starter Chad Voytik (6 of 8 for 32 yards) in the first quarter and alternated series in the second before seizing control late in the first half. Peterman never lost his grip. A junior transfer from Tennessee, he completed 12 of 17 passes for 148 yards and an 18-yard touchdown pass to tight end J.P. Holtz with 44 seconds left in the first half.
