  1. If he isn't recognized in due time by the proper establishment, ZN will have some kind of awards banquet for him (family). Johnny, nice observations. I'm happy to see that our offense has found plays that we can successfully execute, now we can add and fine tune our play calling. PN7 is deadly on those swing passes, I see enough NFL starters and backups that don't execute that pass. That is another good play to have on film to make our future opponents account for.
  2. ....at this time of the year.... Football teams, get better throughout the season, get worse, or stay the same. We do have a chance to get better don't we?
  3. Congrats to the 19 people that said the Zips would cover, you guys were right (including me). Now, here's to hoping we start winning, instead of just covering. Baby steps.
  4. I thought that was a great playcall by Ianello. Everything was working with the exception of our WR dropping the pass. That type of call is one of those calls that if it works everyone says great call. If it doesn't eveyone says bad call. In this case it didn't work but it was a great call. I loved the call even though it didn't work. That play is on film now and opponents will think about it next time we have a short yardage situation. That was one of those "splash" plays I said we needed in order to win. Shows guts to me. Great throw PN7. I wonder given the chance, out of ten times how many times 82 catches that ball?!?
  5. Our secondary must improve if we are planning on winning games. I would never run the ball against the Zips. It is now the biggest concern as a unit, I had three last week, but it's down to one this week. As a whole, other than two dropped passes for TD's, the receiving corp did a better job. The offensive line still needs much improvement, but I think they took a baby step yesterday. Cograts to the offensive coaching staff, nice play calls, you actually kept Indiana guessing at times. PN7 looked good yesterday, he should have finished the day with 4 TD passes, two that were dropped hit his intended receivers right in both hands. He needs to continue to improve his accuracy on long down field passes and he needs to gain more pocket awareness (I'm not sure how you do that, more snaps I suppose). I was wrong before the season started that QB pressure would help this secondary. Only QB sacks help this secondary. No unit should be worked harder this week than the secondary. That 3 receiver bunch they used was good for at least 12 yards anytime they needed it. I would run that play exclusively on 3rd down against Akron. Nice post GP1...oh, did you notice how our opponent used the TE?
  6. Source bj There was no doubt who the took the role of aggressor Friday night in college soccer's matchup of the top two men's teams in the nation. No. 1 University of Akron asserted itself quickly en route to a 4-0 victory over No. 2 Tulsa before a record crowd of 4,744 at Lee Jackson Field. The Zips (6-0-0) put on a clinic in the first 13 minutes, when junior defender Kofi Sarkodie and freshman midfielder Perry Kitchen each scored to take control of the match, which was televised live nationally. ''It was an incredible night, obviously, for our program and for college soccer to be on Fox Soccer Channel,'' UA coach Caleb Porter said. ''I think to get the result that we got is great, but also to do it with a performance that featured style on the attacking side, quality defending and balance on both sides of the ball is, for me, more impressive. ''I thought it was a very dominant performance against a very good team. They are a well-coached team with some very talented players.'' Sarkodie's goal came in the ninth minute from 22 yards away. His shot deflected off Tulsa junior defender Blaine Gonsalves before going past freshman goalkeeper Ray Clark. ''It is always tough to get four goals against an opponent,'' Sarkodie said. ''We have been training hard all week and today we finished our chances. We defended well and we got the result.'' Kitchen netted his goal in the 13th minute from five yards away. Juniors Michael Nanchoff and Darlington Nagbe each got an assist on the goal. Nanchoff started the play with a corner kick, and Nagbe got a touch on the ball before Kitchen put it past Clark. ''We just came out together as a team, and we started out strong,'' Kitchen said. ''The result shows it. ''We didn't expect to get two goals in the first 13 minutes, but we will take it. It's awfully hard to come back from that.'' Zips freshman forward Darren Mattocks made the score 3-0 in the 50th minute with a goal from six yards away. Senior Anthony Ampaipitakwong got an assist after starting the play with a corner kick. Ampaipitakwong concluded the scoring in the 70th minute when he netted a goal from eight yards away. Nagbe tallied his second assist of the night on the goal. Junior Michael Nanchoff and sophomore Scott Caldwell also contributed as starters at midfield for the Zips. UA shut out its sixth consecutive opponent this season and extended its streak to 11 in a row dating to last season. The Zips are tied for the longest shutout streak in NCAA history with Virginia (2009) and Furman (2002). Sarkodie, senior Chris Korb and sophomores Zarek Valentin and Chad Barson were the Zips' defensive starters in front of sophomore goalkeeper David Meves. The Zips, who have not allowed a goal in 1,110 minutes and 59 seconds, held an advantage over the Golden Hurricane (6-1-0) in shots (20-8) and shots on goal (8-1). Zips sophomores Ben Speas and Thomas Schmitt contributed in reserve roles with freshmen Martin Ontiveros and McKauly Tulloch and junior Michael Balogun. ''This was probably our most complete 90-minute performance against a quality opponent this season,'' Porter said.
  7. Source PD AKRON, Ohio — The Akron Zips put their consensus No. 1 soccer ranking on the line Friday night against No. 2 Tulsa and showed once again that all accolades are justified. So dominant was the Zips' 4-0 victory over the Golden Hurricane that -- save for several shots on goal -- an Akron crowd that was boisterous to begin the game became amazingly quiet most of the second half. Perhaps even the Zips are stunned by their overpowering play. The Zips (6-0) have defeated teams ranked No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 in the nation by a combined score of 9-0, two of the wins coming on the road, then Tulsa (6-1) before a record 4,744 fans at Lee Jackson Field. By 12:36 of the first half the Zips were already ahead, 2-0. The first goal was somewhat of a gift as a bullet off the toe of Akron's Kofi Sarkodie from 22-feet went off the head of Tulsa's Blaine Gonsalves, then deflected past the outstretched arms of Tulsa goalie Ray Clark and into the net. Less than four minutes later, Akron's Michael Nanchoff sent a corner kick into the box, where a pair of Akron deflections landed at the foot of Perry Kitchen. He punched a goal into the net from 5 yards. "They're very opportunistic," Tulsa coach Tom McIntosh said. "And they are very good on set pieces. They don't need many chances for goals. The problem is we got two goals down, then we had to chase the game. This is not a team you want to chase a game against." Not only was the normally high-scoring Hurricane without a score, they only had two shots at the Zips, while Akron had eight. The Hurricane did have two corner kicks to one for Akron in the opening half. The second half started well for the Zips as they first defended yet another early corner kick from the Hurricane, then scored off a second corner kick for a 3-0 lead. It was extended to 4-0 at the 69:47 mark. From there on, the main question seemed to be if the Zips' consecutive shutouts streak would be extended to an NCAA record-tying 11. Mission accomplished. The Zips join Furman (2002) and Virginia (2009) at 11 and look to set a new standard Wednesday against Ohio State in Columbus
  8. Right on ZB, have you ever listened to the "media" ask questions at a press conference? It's almost embarrassing how collectively silly they are. Then people read their articles and believe it as fact. Some sports fans don't believe things until they read them in the PD. Of course there are many exceptions to this, but most of the sports media are.... I would play it just like Belichick does with the media.
  9. Agreed. Pro offense is built on that big play action play down field. That doesn't work on every series of downs. We might get four or five shots down field per game. Coach Tomlin calls these splash plays. We need to convert 3 splash plays to be successful. For those plays to work we need to keep the defense honest. In doing so we have a FB that has good hands, I would like to see some swing passes to him. We have done so successfully this year. We have yet to run the play action TE over the LB this year (that I have noticed). These type of chain moving plays help set up your "splash" plays. And like you said, we have to catch those balls on those plays. We also need our OL to step up and give those plays the time they need to develop.
  10. If you guys are replying to a post right above your new post, can you use the (add reply) button instead of the (reply) button. It's just cumbersome to page down over 2 foot of repeated text just to read a few new sentences. Thank you. If you don't know what I mean, see here.
  11. I'm not giving up until I see them in MAC play. They need to show me something though. I have no idea what this team/staff can do. I haven't watched an Indiana game since they played the Zips last year. Indiana did not impress me that day. CJ ruined that day for me. If we use the same play calls on offense as we did last week, I'll say 42-6. If we do some different things than we did last week to move the ball (FB and TE), I'll say 31-17. We are just not a good team right now. I am looking forward to the day I can post that I see progress. Our defense needs to create turnovers to put our struggling offense in good field position. Our offense needs to eat some clock to keep our struggling defense off the field. Hey, our punts are nice this year, so we got that going for us.

  16. Good point. Check out Indiana here. For those of you who like to DVR the game and do something else or just don't like commercials and time outs, the game is on the Big Ten Channel this week. Direct TV Channel 610 at 7 pm.
  17. Akron is 6-2 as an underdog of 21.5 to 31 points since 1992 and 2-1 in the last three.
  18. He is correct in saying that. We need to fix major areas of concern, not minor tweaks. IMO, we need to fix the offensive line play, defensive secondary and the wide receiver group. Those three areas have been grading below average each week. We need them to improve before we start to scheme against other teams. I hope practices are focused on such problem areas.
  19. I'm not either, but if I thought he could come in and change what is going on, I would be. I'm just sure that is not the case, so it's not an issue for me.
  20. Thanks Woot. Is this only for "pro" (I'm ignorant to what league your example is)? Can I bet on college (Akron) somewhere? If I am to give this sport another chance, I am going to have to put some coin on it to make it interesting. Betting can make a game of marbles interesting.
  21. Is there ever betting in this sport? Is there a line? Over/under? Futures? PS You might want to show a source for this comment. Is it just one crazy fan, multiple?
  22. Coach Frisman, fill out a requisition for 9 pair of WAGs today! I know a guy that uses these in every practice and reached the pinnacle of his profession. He credits practicing with these as to one of the reasons.
  23. 1. I was counting at the snap sometimes..1-2-3-3.5...sack. I didn't count every snap, but I remember doing it at least twice. 2. I didn't notice many shotguns, but I agree with you.
  24. I agree, that photo will last forever. You know OU students will be using that for the next decade.
