I would love to see coach Amato whiteboard some different defensive sets he uses. I posted this before, but here is coach Cowher describing some of his different sets and techniques he used in his defenses. Much of this translates. Watching the video again made me think of MTB. When I heard he was moving to TE, I immediately thought of the "Y off." With a lot of our games on ESPN3, we should be able to take some screen captures and follow and diagnose our defensive front alignments. I'll be happy to start that thread next week.

Despite being a fifth-round pick, WR Tajae Sharpe has been making noise in Titans camp from day one, and it’s been common knowledge that he’s looked like a starter for some time now. He may end up doing even more than that, and could be the team’s top target, even with the return of Kendall Wright. Sharpe runs crisp routes, seems to always be in the right place, and QB Marcus Mariota has been singing praises about his ability to adjust and read the game as plays unfold. He clearly has huge confidence in Sharpe already, and it shows on the field. This week, the former UMass standout caught all six passes thrown his way for 68 yards, showed he could make tough catches, and was simply in the right place at the right time. The numbers I would be interested in, are the height and weight difference between the two lines. Edit: I think they play a base 3-4.

I like this: And one of those good guys could be a wild card. Sophomore Kwadarrius Smith is a name that Lane mentions and one that makes Bowden’s ears perk up. Smith, thus far, has shown up and put the spotlight on himself as if to say: “Look at me. I’m here!” It’s worked. Just last year, Jeff Bowden said he thought Smith was at least two years from making an impact in the UA offense. “Now I’m saying he’s threatening the second team position and if Austin [Wolf] isn’t careful,” he said, “he’ll threaten his starting position. He’s young. He’s learning, but you’ve hit the nail on the head in that he’s very dangerous.” Smith, who also runs track and has been clocked as fast as 4.28 seconds in the 40-yard dash, said he took the time from the end of the season to learn from his teammates. He knows what he has to do to crack that rotation.

That, along with other Brown habits such as intense film study, apparently has rubbed off on both players. “He’s a young Jatavis,” Amato said of the 6-foot-1, 225-pound Gilbert. “At this point in time, when Jatavis was a sophomore, Gilbert’s getting that way at this point.” Amato said he sees the potential in this year’s group. “We’ve got a lot of talent and potential. We just have to take our time,” he said. “We just can’t do as much as we did last year and be smart. We’ve got three weeks. We’ll be ready to play whoever.” Coach Amato has earned my trust with the results of his group.

Some depth chart notes: The biggest change came at inside linebacker, where Justin March got the first-string nod next to Derrick Johnson instead of Ramik Wilson. Wilson eventually got some time with the first-string, but in subsequent 11-on-11 sessions, March always seemed to take the field first. The switch makes some sense; March was terrific Saturday, flashing multiple times, while Reid said afterward that Wilson was a tad hesitant to attack at times. Update: Paxton Lynch completed 6 of 7 passes for 74 yards for 0 touchdowns and 0 interceptions and added 3 rushes for 5 yards. Connor Cook impressed, completed 7 of 11 passes for 71 yards, would’ve been even better if an offensive pass interference call hadn’t wiped out a long completion. I watched Dak Prescott go 10-12 for 139 yards and two touchdowns. I thought he looked great. He finished with a 154.5 QB rating. If your watching HBO's Hard Knocks you know Jared Goff has a hard time figuring out where the sun rises and sets. Here is a Goff evaluation on his rough start. Carson Wentz started off with an injury. Cardale Jones went 11 of 21 for 162 yards and a quarterback rating of 93.8. He also rushed four times for 34 yards. No tweets about the Zips after. After Cody Kessler figured out GB's odd end zone markings, he went 2-2 for 15 yards and a TD.
