  1. get rid of Buffalo and Western Kentucky and I'd be happy...get 2 decent teams from C-USA to switch
  2. I thought YSU would moving to the Big Ten because they are the greatest football team to ever walk on this planet? well I guess their fans would make you think that...
  3. At what other school would this be noticed? Nearly every school in the country. Are you an Ohio State fan or something? Seriously, not trying to direct hate at you at all, i'm just confused with how you can honestly think at a college sporting event it's alright to have another (especially a rival) team's logo on you. Akron needs to build it's own identity, if someone wont come to something because they are a bigger OSU fan then who cares? I'd rather build something great and have a true fan base that isn't a bunch of front running sheep. Yes, I am an Ohio State fan. I didn't grow up in Akron, or near any other university. My parents were Buckeyes fans, so doing what a lot of little kids do, I followed my parents and became a Buckeyes fan. I remember starting to watch them when I was 5 years old, so by the time I got accepted to The University of Akron I had been a Bucks fan for 13 years. I graduated from Akron and continue to attend UA for my Master's Degree. Over the past 10 years, I've grown to love Akron Zips athletics quite a bit, especially the basketball program. I've been to countless games, I've traveled out of state to see them, and have successfully turned my parents and wife into Zips fans as well. The Zips are far and away my #1 collegiate sports program. With that being said, my love for UA sports doesn't mean I'm going to just stop following Ohio State as my #2. I continue to cheer for them in every game that isn't against Akron...and I don't think there's anything wrong with that. I never wear OSU stuff to Akron games, but I also don't care if other people do. It doesn't affect our recruits, it doesn't affect our players, and we are not rivals (playing them in soccer doesn't make us rivals..with that line of thinking Milliken is our rival too). A few other things...I have seen people wear other teams' gear in other places numerous times - I've seen just about every MLB team's stuff at Progressive Field (when that team isn't playing), same goes for the Q and Browns Stadium. It happens a lot more than you think. One more thing...any non-athlete who selects a college based on their sports teams is going to that school for all the wrong reasons. no where in this did you say anything about you or your parents attending OSU. So you are a bandwaggon fan, you have no other reason to root for them except for the fact that they are good. You have ZERO connection to the school!
  4. It wouldn't matter if we had Tom Brady as our QB, our line is so terrible he'd have a half a second to throw every play, and when you have no WRs it's even harder.
  5. They are the original state school. I'd root for the Bongcats over the OSU NOTC's any day as well. That doesn't mean they represent Ohio...good God, the OSU inferiority complex is annoying. No school represents Ohio. Just like UA does not represent Akron. They are both schools! not professional sports teams. Imagine you went to Hoban for high school and every day you had to listen to classmates talk about how awesome St. V's is and how much better they are. See how stupid it is to be sitting in a class at The University of Akron and have to listen to idiots run their mouth about OSU.
  6. They are the original state school. I'd root for the Bongcats over the OSU NOTC's any day as well. Agreed! I love how 90% of suckeyes fans have never taken a class there, but they claim it to be their school. Bunch of idiots! They jump on the bandwaggon and have fun watching other teams win national championships while they are busy beating up on schools like Marshall and OU.
  7. I know we had a terrible seasons, but our defense played well in some games. It's expected that they are going to get tired after an offense continually goes 3 and out. So I feel like our offense needs to be our focus. Two glaring needs I see are the O-Line and Receivers. Nicely is not a bad quarterback, he had a good freshman season so we know what he's capable of. He just NEEDS someone to throw to. He has to force throws or just throw the ball away because everyone is covered, if he waits more than a second he gets sacked. Don't get me wrong, he has made plenty of mistakes, but when your offense struggles you have to take risks and sadly for us there are rarely positive outcomes. It will be difficult to get kids to come to a 1-11 program, but please RI do your best!
  8. The same group of students are the ones who make the noise at soccer games. The difference is that at soccer all the other students are packed in around them, and so join in every once in a while. You don't get that effect in the JAR with seating arrangements the way they are. Unify the student section and you'll see a much stronger student presence, and it might even encourage more students to show up. This is a major issue for the atmosphere of basketball games. exactly, those little seating sections behind the hoops do nothing. Kick the old people out of the blue seats and give it to the students! But I understand they want to give the good seats to the people who actually pay to watch the games. Another option would be to make all the students sit behind the hoops, in the lower blue seats and bleachers. Just like at Infocision where they have the "Arby's Student Section" ...or you know they kick the band out. Move them up to the bleachers where they are supposed to be!
  9. Do you guys realize that Tom W is not a football coach here, he is the AD? What does he have to do with rebuilding the team and all the losing? Yes he hired coach I, but beyond that you can't blame him...
  10. +1 This is pretty much THE issue here. UA Athletics does a horrible job promoting the teams (soccer included) to get students to come out. Wow... pizza and pop... big whoop. EVERY time they attempt that pathetic marketing ploy, 1 of 2 things happens: 1) students show up, do nothing, wait till they get their free "stuff" and leave, or 2) they don't show up because honestly... pizza and pop are the 2 most lame things to "give away". Let's not forget that these are STUDENTS here. They aren't paying thousands every semester to go to every athletic event. A lot of them have classes, homework, or hell... even JOBS that get in the way of these stupid weekday games. I for one couldn't make the game because I was slammed with homework due the next day. Students will never come out in large numbers for weekday games. Never will happen. Play on Saturdays and they'll come in larger numbers. But to sit there and say that there should be hundreds upon thousands of students at a Wednesday 6pm game is absolutely absurd. Want to fix the attendance problem? WIN GAMES. End of discussion. You all can wallow on about ticket prices and stupid details like that, but none of them are long-term solutions. To put butts in the seats, win games, win the conference, play in bowl games, get national exposure. Also, let's be realistic here... any MAC team has about no chance at regularly selling out for all their home games. I would be plenty happy to see ~20k for every game. What the hell do you expect. THE TEAM HASN'T WON A GAME ALL YEAR! What is the school supposed to do? pay each student $100 to come? really I would like to know what you people expect to happen. Just deal with it that this team is awful, they gave out free t-shirts, free food, free soccer tickets, and plenty of other promotions this year. I don't know what you want.
  11. No one wants to watch a team lose. It's as simple as that! People can blame the marketing dept or Tom W himself. But what do people expect? sell outs every week to watch a team that is in all reality, painful to watch. Give it time people...
  12. how many things can you people complain about? holy cow!
  13. Yeah I bet it won't be hard to get a kid to come play for a team that can't even win a game...
  14. that seems reasonable enough. I like that they try to keep something like an intro song consistent among all sports. Like I said, it starts a tradition, they NEED to keep it around. Now the video was so so. My favorite was the intro video they used in 2007-2008 season...I think it had the requiem for a dream theme in the background. I think we need to bring something like that back. Special effects, loud music, shots of akron, then highlights....that's what makes a good video.
  15. they play thunderstruck before almost every Akron athletics event. Especially both women's and men's bball, volleyball, and of course football for at least the past 5 years...they ALWAYS play it before tipoff or kickoff...you could call it tradition I suppose not just a football song, there are no references in it about football so I'm not sure why you guys think that?
  16. I just look at this game as if it were a football schedule. You know when a "powerhouse" school, like you know Syracuse, blows out a crappy team at the beginning of the season, that doesn't even care about winning....like you know Akron Just a chance to get all of our players pt, and get their confidence up! Also I hope there will be no disappointments like last years Austin Piss? season opening loss...
  17. if you want to play a horrible team, why does it matter what division they are in?
  18. kind of disappointed this was only an exhibition. Hopefully we blow Millikin out of the water on the 12th, just like we did to JC. Funny that Can't fans said we'd lose tonight...
  19. Yeah. They play at the Canton Civic Center. They're a club team. haha I wish akron had a "real" hockey team...maybe when we get a "real" arena....
  20. I think Cincy is a good example of what we can compare to. They lived in OSwho's shadow but still managed to move up, and only because of their basketball team. I'm not sure, but I don't think their football team was ever anything spectacular. But a big conference would never accept a winless MAC team...that is a fact. Sad though because we have more potential than any other mid-major program in the country.
  21. Man our football team really killed our chances of ever moving up. So sad that terrible schools like UCF and Houston can move up instead of us....
  22. Having been to both I can tell you, it's not. It's not really even fair to compare the two, they are not really the same, close, but not the same. Especially since one doesn't even exist. I think the people that made a stink regarding the football golf outing attended the basketball golf outing. Thanks for checking in TW. I bet if the football team still had their golf outing they'd be undefeated right now! my point was that when a pointless event gets canceled everyone around here cries, but when a good event goes on no one gives a crap. Always go for the negative, you waste your time complain about parking spaces and ticket prices when there are a lot of positive things happening.
  23. woops my blame goes to coach porter for being out coached, the official for blowing the call, and CSU for playing the game of their lives....that is all. *hides* I know that game for CSU might as well be "their" championship. They won't even make the tourney, and prob won't even finish above .500. The game meant nothing to us, so if any we should be glad the loss came now and not when it really mattered!
  24. I guess there's no more offsides in soccer? the zips need to at least try here, Cleveland State is terrible....shouldn't even be close
