  1. How would you propose the players get paid, Balzy? Everybody the same? How much? You're going to pay Johnny Manziel the same as the 4th string walk-on QB? Do they have to cover all expenses? What happens when the student-athletes are irresponsible with their money and don't pay for tuition? It would lead to an even bigger disparity in college football. The best players are going to go to the programs with the biggest budgets who can pay the most. It would lead to the death of college athletics as we know it. College athletics are to get a college education and/or prepare students for proffesional sports. If you want to get paid, there are plenty of other options to explore. My point is that's its entirely too complex of an issue to ever work. I'm not saying they aren't comparable to employees, but I don't see RA's unionizing nor getting free vacations to Puerto Rico, Hawaii, etc every year.
  2. coaches get bonuses for success as well, who cares? I believe I read somewhere once that a D1 university typically spends somewhere around 500k per student-athlete throughout the life of their eligibility. This includes tuition, living expenses, stipend, travel, everything. I'm not going to elaborate much because I could write an essay on this topic, but if somebody truly believes athletes being considered employees is in any way, shape, or form feasible....you haven't thought about it much, or you're just delusional.
  3. Northwestern should just discontinue their athletic programs. Then the students can work wherever they want and pay for that elite private education.
  4. Like the MAC forcing the hand, but it's something that should have been done from the beginning. As for UMASS, good luck finding another FBS conference. I guess maybe the AAC would take them with the Boston market, but who knows. They are horrible.
  5. ^ Hopefully he can fill that huge void at PG. Too bad its not for a few years.
  6. Completely irrelevant, but Hoyer's younger sister is also at U of A. Coincidence that she lives with somebody who works in the football office?
  7. FWIW, I know a very well respected professor who is on the board of trustees who is in favor of Tressel. I've pointed on here in the past, that I directly asked a former Dean what he thought the University was looking for in the next President. In my mind, he described Tressel to a T. I've also heard from my source who talked to a very well respected member of the University that he believes Tressel will be the next President. This was when Proenza first announced retirement. I've thought all along he was a legitimate candidate. These examples only enforce my opinion...and with the candidate list appearing weak, there is little doubt in my mind Tressel will be the next President, at the very least on an interim basis to start.
  8. I'm a fan of Cubes, but think he is off base here. Well, he may not be off base, but he shouldn't be throwing stones in glass houses. The NBA is in a lot worse shape.
  9. I think we would be a good fit for the MVC in basketball, at least a lot better than any other conference if we are looking to take the basketball program to another level. I just don't think it makes sense geographically. Ask WVU how they are enjoying the Big 12.
  10. Right. The most likely move that would make any sense would be to join the A-10 for basketball only, sort of how like UMASS is in the MAC for football only. But, that is pretty unrealistic and I honestly feel we have a better chance in the MAC in making the tournament. Maybe even the Big East as a basketball only conference as well, but I have to imagine we would be near bottom feeders there. Throw out joining any major conference for any or all sports. Completely unrealistic. The C-USA (all sports), Horizon (bball only), etc are all lateral moves. I actually think the MVC would be a great fit for us as a basketball only conference, but doesn't really fit geographically.
  11. I wonder what came first with some of these programs, on court success or pouring money into the program?
  12. What is wrong with a non-doctorate President? Can a non-science experienced President not improve the STEM programs? What do we care about public perception outside the state of Ohio? Perception is something that can be changed by going against the grain and proving disapprovers wrong. Results won't lie.
  13. unfortunately?
  14. Thanks for the info. Didn't realize how far back it went. It appears I did downplay the exent of the relationship. However, I still believe that myself, you, or about 99% of the people on this forum could have coached Lebron to the NBA. (That doesn't mean we are great coaches or that KD is a bad coach). What I'm trying to say is using Lebron to make a point for KD makes as much sense to me as using the development of a walk-on as a point against KD. Let's use some more relevant data, not the extreme outliers.
  15. lol. I have to say KD played a very small role in the development of Lebron. He coached him..one or two seasons? And lets not act like Lebron isn't a natural beast.
  16. lets change the slogan to "Think like Dayton"
  17. I'm confused as to why we are supposed to care what some random professor in California thinks and why we should value their opinion. He obviously is an introvert weirdo (like 75% of college professors) if he has no clue who Tressel is .ie- didn't know the "inside story".
  18. Holmes couldn't be more on the money. Why wasn't there any media coverage from ABJ? Would be interested in hearing the participants/how things went. edit: as soon as I'm done typing this, I see an article by Stephanie Storm come up on my twitter. it's still pretty broad. http://www.ohio.com/sports/zips/zips-put-talents-on-display-for-nfl-scouts-1.475314#.Uyz-vQfq-Zs.twitter
  19. Not going to get into this too much, because people have opinions/agendas that aren't going to change no matter the points that are brought up, but why do you have to have "education experience" to be a successful President? To me, being a President has more to do with leadership qualities than anything. BTW Balzy- when reading you explain the Purdue situation, I couldn't help of think of our very own University. As for the funding, not going to buy that we will lose out to OSU everytime. We would have the guy nicknamed "The Senator" running things and people aren't going to ignore him. The Cleveland-Akron-Canton area is the most populated in the state. The public universities in the region will not be ignored. Start with concentrating on being the dominate one in the region (maybe already are) and go from there. It's not like UA is some podunk school with 3k enrollment. We have the numbers that warrant attention and have potential.
  20. The thing about joining better conferences is we actually have to have something that attracts the other conferences. What conference are you thinking of? The A-10 for basketball only? We'd go .500..maybe worse. The Horizon? Lateral. You can throw out any of the Big 5. Moving to another mid-major in all sports all together like the C-USA isn't worth it. Let's start with worrying about improving ourselves and the rest will take care of itself. A simple answer of just "swiching to a better conference" with the assumed notion it's going to somehow elevate us to national relevance just doesn't add up to me.
  21. what about BYU, Boise, Utah, San Diego St, Memphis (excluding the past few years of football), hell..even OU. What is the excuse not to have any combination of success in both sports that those mid-majors have had?
  22. So a team we beat (was it by double digits)? Last year in the Bracketbusters is now about to knockoff 5 seed Oklahoma. They play in the crap Summit league (the same league as IPFW). I just don't understand why we are not able to take the next step....
  23. Tree comes to mind, though he may be the exception. My opinion tends to lean to put most of the blame on KD. The players are at fault to an extent, but it is his job to develop, motivate, and bring the talent he has assembled to play together as a team. Someone's player development I'm really disappointed in is Harney's. I just see so much potential in him, but he lets me down every season. He did win us a pretty big game playing out of position at PG though, so I'll give him credit for that.
  24. I bet Balzy is loving the 37 second week recap. I don't think it's a Bowden issue. Dude seems to love to talk. Seems like its the editors cutting him out mid way.
  25. remember when we were excited about him? Yikes.
