  1. I wonder if the poor attendance was due to a lack of promoting it? We have gone every year they have had it, and didn't hear a single thing about this year's event.I am only in the area for a short time and was not here for last year's event...but I heard of the event. I woud have loved to take my daughter to the event but would have had to trek back to N. Canton after the football game to pick her up. If it would have been on Sunday we would have been there for sure.
  2. I know you have your reasons, but since UA has NEVER won down there I'll take ANY victory without the qualifiers thank you very much Since I also graduated from Miami...can't root for a blow out ;-) But will be rooting on the Zips!!!!
  3. We are leaving fo the game on Tuesday and will stay the thru Friday. Anyone going can stop by the Best Western on campus to share a beer or just say "hello". Hoping for a close Zip victory.
  4. You gotta explain how the probability of losing in OT was better than 43%. I need to see that one.I am indifferent to the decision on this play. I really don't have a problem that they went for the win....although I probably would have taken the game to OT. Here is why I think it is not a bad idea:1. If you do not like the defense you are going against you can let the play clock run out and take 5 yards and kick the extra point.2. If you get a penalty...even a 15 yard version...you can kick the extra point.3. If you go into overtime and have a penalty you will probably lose. Tough to pick up an extra 10 or 15 yards near the goal line.4. If you lose the coin toss in OT...you may have to take the ball first. Way more pressure with having the ball 1st.If I was sure to get the ball second in OT...I would choose to go to OT. Otherwise, I am OK with this decision.
  5. "Aggressive?" No. "Stupid?" Yes. He played that last 4 seconds like he's never been in that position before. Which is understandable, because he's never been so close to a win before. He didn't have the faith in his guys to win in OT, so he took the 1-in-3 gamble to go for 2 in regulation. He rolled snake eyes.iCoach blew the game. Stupid play call. Time to get waxed by Miami.Assumptions The NCAA and the NFL have similar statistics for the success rate of two-point conversions and extra points. In the NFL the figures are 43% for the two-point conversion and 94% for the extra point, while in the NCAA the figures are 43.5% and 93.8% http://www.thesportjournal.org/article/pla...-two-touchdownsBrad Detwiler on Zips radio said he could not criticize the play call. He believed that either decision was defendable and OK. He went on to say that if you polled the players (he was a player in late 90s) that 98% would say go for the 2. He also theorized that by going for 2, the decision was on him and not the players if they should lose in OT...inferring that he was taking on the responsibility intentionally. I think there are alternative views that are valid.I don't have a problem with the call because he was going for the win and building team aggressiveness and cohesiveness. My only issue is with who the primary target was...Price. It is debatable if he is a quality receiver at this time, but I think it is not debatable that he does not catch the ball in traffic well. I would have targeted Suel on the other side or the TE Ladrach in the back center of end zone. Price was double covered and I am sure Suel was blanketed as well….there had to be room for the TE to slip into the gap. Just my opinion...
  6. Topdrawersoccer shows 5 teams from Conference USA being ranked for the playoffs. With Marshall and Kentucky, you'd think that Conference USA is their likely destination. http://www.topdrawersoccer.com/college-soc...nce-usa/cfid-10 Is there any benefit in combining with CUSA for soccer?? Both conferences have soccer only memberships
  7. We will never play at Aeros stadium. It would be cost prohibitive. Baseball will never be played at the highest level in the north. But I like the idea of placing the new arena where the current baseball field is. Baseball can be relocated to a less advantageous location as it is not a revenue sport. Basketball needs a great arena in an ideal location.
  8. Where is the money going to come from? If I remember, half of The Big Dialer was paid for with public money. The state is broke. It isn't like it was 5 years ago when money was flowing everywhere. The University doesn't have the money to build it or maintain it once built. It's one thing to build something, it's another thing to maintain something once built. The University can't afford a BB arena right now. @Zach...Don't let the facts get in the way of a good story. @GP1...People never have a problem spending other peoples money.

  10. Not only the MAC...all programs running in the red will go much further in the red. If the UofA was to pay all athletes an additional 2K, my guess is that it would be close to 500K further in the red. My problem has always been how that shortfall is funded. At many schools the students will cough up the difference. What I think the net effect will be is to make the gap between “haves” and “have nots” greater. I don't see all schools adding the 2K.On a separate theoretical thought... To be completely fair, shouldn't students who get a free education (scholarship) have to report the cost of those benefits to the IRS ...or the students who do not get them get a tax deduction?? If they were recorded as benefits, then maybe they would be eligible for the W/C that GP1 is clamoring for. Just a thought.....
  11. +1+1 unless we are expecting some transfers out.
  12. Berlin, Ohio or Berlin, Germany?Downtown restaurant in Berlin, Ohio. Don't remember the name but Keener says it is famous.
  13. You are right. I remember a sexual assault and should not have thought more before I posted. You have my apology.
  14. I have to say....it is way more interesting and enjoyable to be debating which player should get playing time. Especially when those players are true freshmen. In the past, it seemed we had only a few key players and we were looking for guys who could provide minutes without embarrassing us or hurting our chances of winning. The roster, from top to bottom, is filled with guys who can help us win. The next few years will be exciting years for Zips fans. If we can find a replacement for Zeke over the next 2 recruiting seasons, we will have a long run of high level basketball. Will be fun to be a Zip fan. It will be interesting to see where we are rated in the "Mid-major tp 25" when the season starts and where we end up. I don't think many outside Akron realize how good we can be.I met KD's father in a restaurant in Berlin last week. I commented that Keith always seemed to overachieve with the talent he had but this year was a little different...expectations are much higher and the team much more talented. He cautioned me that the team will be very young and inexperienced. He was a genuinely nice man...easy to see why KD is a man of high character. GoZips has mentioned the same thing about youth and experiance. Although most teams are better at year end...our improvement will be far greater than most. IMHO...expect good things from this team.
  15. Let's see. Miami suspends a guy indefinitely for "conduct unbecoming a member of the program". He broke no laws as we know of. Now...let's look at Can't for a comparison. What...didn't they give a guy 2 game suspension for rape?? Just shows what a pathetic program Can't is. Oh yea...good for Miami and Charlie Coles.
  16. There's a lot of truth in this article. If the locals feel we are not giving them a fair shot we will continue to lose talent and fans. I feel very few sports fans in Stark county identify with Akron because we have not developed relationships in that market. There are many kids who want to stay home and play for their local university. Unfortunately we have not made them feel that they we are there local university. They don't feel connected. If they can help raise our talent level we have to find a way to let them know they are welcomed at Akron.I don't see this changing until we have a change in coaching leadership and I am someone who wants Ianello to succeed. Realistically I now feel he doesn't have the ability.Already a thread on this topic:http://zipsnation.org/forums//index.php?showtopic=24402
  17. From a time/availability viewpoint, would be easier to get the MNST head coaching position while coaching a college team or a MSL team?? I believe that is his ultimate goal.We will be at the game on Thursday. Hope the girls can get a big win.I think I sent you a PM. Not sure if it actually sent or not(Showing 0 sent messages in my message box) Received. You have to mark "save" below the input form for a copy to remain in your sent box.Really hope the girls make the tournament. It would be a step back and sad to see when they seem to have potential. Hopefully they play with a sense of urgency and determination that was missing in the last few losses. Either way...we will be there cheering them on (unless of course...there is cold rain).
  18. From a time/availability viewpoint, would be easier to get the MNST head coaching position while coaching a college team or a MSL team?? I believe that is his ultimate goal.We will be at the game on Thursday. Hope the girls can get a big win.The Revs are a mess and a project and it would be worse for his career than staying at Akron by far. Also, as mentioned, MLS plays through the Summer whereas college does not. How would he balance trying to get a new team to qualify for the Olympics with trying to get a new MLS team to be good again? Way too much work. Also, this hasn't been mentioned yet, but is anyone going to want to buy Porter out of his current contract? Seems like it would be too much. NE's owners have a reputation for not investing the proper money into their club. The Revs are looking at a few others guys already, not worried about this one. Now if in a few years the head coach position at a good club opens up, that could be an issue. Again, I'm not concerned yet. I hope Caleb will take the Bruce Arena route. Arena was the coach at UVA for 17 years before making the leap to the pros. After only three seasons at DC he was tapped to be the head coach of the USMNT. This shows that you don't need a ton of pro experience to be the coach of the national team. You knda answered my question. I was more interested in the TIME involved. Is it easier to get involved with the national teams and build relationships working as a college coach or from the MSL. Given that college coaches have the summer free....it appears that it may be easier from the college ranks. At least that is my hope...that will keep Porter here through 2014.Thanks

  20. thats precisely my point. taking weather conditions at gametime will only show a part of the story as you have the added variable of "marquee" matchups and the playoffs. It would still be another good way to look at attendance, I was just pointing out a valid flaw in the data such considerations would produce.Yea...there are lots of variables. But if you look at our attendance trend over the past years and some of the ACC schools...it appears that attendance declines when the weather gets cold and or rainy. Even big names draw less in late fall. I am not trying to throw water on the analysis...quite the opposite. Bobbyake spent lots of time (incredible actually) putting this together. I think some are disappointed that the attendance has dropped. I am trying to show that weather will play a big role...even in a National Championship year. We should be very proud of our attendance. My guess is that we do not take as big a hit as other big soccer programs at this time of year.
  21. I was not trying to defend any coach but the program in general and to expose the sloppy effort of the reporter. I believe Akron always has had difficulty recruiting locally. I do think that is changing a bit though. (through the efforts of Brookhart and Ianello and the campus and stadium upgrades)I always thought Wagner was from the local Springfield. My bad.
  22. I heard a few years ago that a McKinley coach was having difficulty from the parents of players because he was not lobbying hard enough for scholarships. Coaches lobby. This guy is lobbying. But the reporter is the guy who did not do his job. He did not research the data and let this guy use him. Stark county is not ignored...but maybe the small schools don't ge the attention of schools like Massillon and McKinley. But it is the same in every other county.
  23. Green High School has 2 players who could play in the MAC. One of them(6'5" receiver) has been offered by 2 MAC programs, but Ianello has never set foot on Greens Campus. Want to put fans into the seats at the Info? Recruiting local players would be a good first step.Looks like he did not do his homework:8 Zack Campbell P Sr. 6-2 198 Canton, Ohio/Canton McKinley HS 61 Ben Karam LB So. 6-1 199 Massillon, Ohio/Perry HS 84 Rhyne Ladrach TE Jr. 6-5 247 Orrville, Ohio/Orrville HS 43 Adam Steiner LS Jr. 6-2 215 Canton, Ohio/GlenOak HS what is the N. Canton's kids name who is in trouble??should we include Torrence from Massillon as a recruit?? 75 Dylan Brumbaugh OT Fr. 6-4 286 Green, Ohio/Green HS 66 Clayton Chenault OL So. 6-2 301 Akron, Ohio/Buchtel HS 37 Seth Cunningham CB So. 6-0 184 Medina, Ohio/St. Edward HS 36 Cody Grice FB Fr. 6-0 256 Akron, Ohio/Firestone HS 18 Will Fleming TE So. 6-4 240 Akron, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban HS 93 Connor Seeman DE Jr. 6-3 226 Copley, Ohio/Copley HS 34 Brian Wagner LB Jr. 6-0 235 Springfield, Ohio/Springfield Catholic Central HS 95 Robert Young DE So. 6-0 248 Akron, Ohio/Firestone HS http://www.gozips.com/sports/fball/2011-12/rosterSeems there are more local kids then we normally have.
  24. Point taken. I guess I should pay more attention.Just trying to be a little sarcastic with a poster who has posted the same thing for the last 4 weeks. I probably should have just repeated what we did last week...just provide what was for dinner (I know... is poor grammar)It's not easy being an Akron Football fan. A lot of us believe it's only going to get worse under Ianello. I've realized that we're stuck with him for at least another year or 2, and it's very hard to stomach. I understand you still have hope that Ianello will turn things around, but a lot of us don't. We have sufficient reason to blame this on Ianello. We are all passionate Akron fans here. It's not easy to do nothing when you know what's causing the problem.Hiring Ianello was a step backwards for the program and it's going to be awhile until we see a step forward. The problem is: what can we do?? Nothing really. Although I am not happy with the way things are going, there are some reasons to have hope. I just believe it is not helpful to continually bash this guy and the program. If you look back....you will see many made this determination about iCoach prior to any games being played. Some of the things he is getting bashed for are really petty. Dispite what anyone thinks, he will get 3 years before there is consideration to terminate his contract. If there is no improvement next year, I believe TW and LP will pull the plug. IMHO I think it is counterproductive to continually bash this guy.So...although I am not happy...I will continue to support the coach and team. But I have decided not to participate in the football forum until after the end of this season. Better to just let everybody vent their anger and frustration.
