  1. Bintang??? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bintang_Beer You know Doug, I didn't really pay a whole lot of attention to the import section, but it looked to be almost all European, nothing Asian jumped out at me, but it could have been there. I just really can't say. The import section was dwarfed by the American Micros, which had me under their spell, so I am not a good judge. Sorry, Doug. I will pay more attention from now on when I am on a beer trek. Thanks...I will have to make a trip myself.
  2. Gotta Agree. I disagree. While I believe that Moore is the better QB and better leader...I am afraid that we would lose Nicely if he lost the competition at this point. If Moore was clearly the better player and proved it on the field, then I think Nicely would accept the demotion. I think it is better to start Nicely and keep challenging Moore to learn the system better and reduce his errors. While at the practice on Saturday, I sat with a parent of one of players (a key player on offense). He said that Nicely was the more consistent player and that Moore took more risks ...could have more big plays but also more mistakes (according to his son). ICoach said something similar in a video last week. He believed that Nicely knew the system better and would be the starter. I am disappointed that Moore has not separated himself but it is sometimes hard to do at practice. Even if Nicely starts...Moore will get a chance. There will be injuries and ICoach may give him a series or 2 to see him in game situations. I know that people often see what they want to see (just ask Zach)...but I just don't see Nicely as a team leader. I think I see that in Moore. In the end...I hope who ever starts does a good job. I believe the success of this year's team is dependent on having an effective QB.

  4. Respectfully, this is a bad point. We don't punish people in this country for crimes committed in another country. We may send them back to the country where they are charged, but we don't punish them here. See...I am always confused by your posts. Your footer throws me off. Your post is talking about committing a crime in another country and coming back but Dave's post was talking about committing a crime here and feeing to another country. You obviously are not that stupid...so it must be intentional.
  5. New ideas?? He is a journalist and reporter. Not a product or software developer. What I want from reporters and journalists is to give me the unvarnished facts. I am will make my own opinions from the facts. The demise of unbiased journalism is the most discouraging development of the last 10 years. As a opinion columnist...he gives his opinions without trashing anyone or flame throwing. Maybe the generation growing up with Howard Stern require more controversy...but I don't like it. In the most recent big event in Cleveland sports, the trade for Ubaldo Jimenez, he came out against it and gave his reason why. LOL Mount Union?? The BJ target market is Summit and Start counties. MU is in Stark county and has many local kids on the team. Why would he NOT write about them?? He was NOT the beat writer for the Zips so it would be unreasonable for him to promote them. Just because you may have a new idea does NOT mean it is a good idea and one that anyone wants to hear.
  6. What will be the final 2011 season record?? My prediction is 7-5 I went to the practice today and was pleasantly surprised in some areas and disappointed in others. The crucial area of disappointment is the quarterbacks. None are extremely accurate. Moore is significantly more accurate than Nicely but still missed on receivers when he was rolling out and under some pressure. My guess is that whoever the quarterback is...they will be under pressure. I still do not think Nicely is a leader...but I think he will start the season #1. I think the receivers and running backs will be far better than what anyone here expects. Difficult to grade the defense from practice. But...I will go on-record as 7-5
  7. No he doesn't. The last article I read of his when he actually had an opinion was when he wrote this big article when the Tribe signed Alomar, saying it was a huge mistake. Robby was no good, spit on umpires, was going to be trouble in the club house. Now Alomar is in the hof and probably was half of the best middle infield I have seen in my lifetime. TP's opinions suck, he should stick to diggin up old stuff and redoing it. Terry Pluto Terry Pluto is a sports columnist for the Plain Dealer. But some are more highly regarded than others.
  8. Why bother. If you can't get it from reading your question....you are not going to get it.
  9. 5 of the 6 would be new starters. 3 of the 6 would be new to the program. Not going to happen and I don't think it should. Not only will McClanahan will be one of the team leaders....he will be a returning starter and a senior. Also...Tree and Nick should not be on the floor together as they lack experiance. And most importantly...where is the Serb?? I agree with GoZip and think Q should be the 6th man. With his versatility he would be a difficult matchup for any second unit we play. He could be aggressive off the bench and make our second unit one of our strengths. Who plays at the end will be determined by the opponent and who is playing well. My guess is that Q will be on the floor at the end of games and be a leader in minutes played. But I like the idea of his start coming 10 minutes into the game where he could either extend a lead or change the momentum.
  10. There is nothing wrong with letting the competition play out. The same thing is going on at Texas, Miami and Notre Dame. Sometimes the coaching staff makes a QB decision early that is wrong. That's what happened to Texas A&M last year if you will recall. Zach's coach of choice was Luke Fickell.. Isn't Luke doing just what Zach is advocating against?? So Luke is now on Zach's shit list too....interesting.
  11. I repeat my previous statement... it is easier to learn the offensive side of things Hey Z.I.P. Thanks for the tip with the smiley’s. I am normally online working at 10PM to 3AM so I don't waste a lot of time researching things like that. Any tips on tables?? Would love to cut and paste from Excel...but that does not seem to work here.
  12. Not good with all the icons or adding graphs/charts/tables. Doubt that I will have the patience to learn. Would like to figure out how to use tables as it is useful sometimes.
  13. After watching the video I am more convinced that ALL the incoming freshman should be redshirted. They obviously learn a lot sitting and watching. Would have been far better for Egner to have redshirted last year too. While Harney and Tree may not have been on the court for practices....but they were able to see the games, the coaching stye and the success of the program. I do not consider them incoming freshman.
  14. I am old and my memory faulty so accept my apologies now if I my memory fails me. But....it seems to me that KD took some heat last year as a coach that could not coach guys up. The thinking was that guys did not continue to make progress or stalled after year 1. Now here is my question.... given that we seemed to get better players than the guys who left/de-commited, do you think it is that we actually got better talent or.. KD and staff were able to improve the guys who stayed/replaced de-commited at a faster pace than the schools that they left for??
  15. I am glad we're giving him a real look at RB (not necessarily FB). The easiest thing in the world to do is make the white kid a linebacker. It takes a rare, free-thinker to give him a chance to run the ball. He could be Peyton Hillis or Toby Gerhart? He could be lethal inside the 5 yard line? He could be the money back that gets us 4 yards on 3rd and 2? Maybe he's a bigger Bobby Hendry? I want to see him play RB before I stereotype him as an LB. My thought process had nothing to do with race. Sorry that you think that way. I guess you have to assume he is a Hillis or Gearhart type. I'm surprised you didn't say TD Tommy Vardell. You appear to be the one stereotyping here. We seem to have a decent stable of RB. We need more LB's. The kid was a star as a LB moreso than as a RB. I stated my reason in my post. Race's role is slotting football players is a fact. Ask any coach. Ask ITZ or GP1. If you are uncomfortable discussing a reality...we'll just pretend it isn't true and I'll discuss fairy tale stuff. Who comprises "decent stable of running backs?" Chisolm, who's never run the ball in college Staten, who's never run the ball in college. Alexander, who's coming off major knee surgery. Truth is -- We are as unproven at the RB position as you could possibly be. And we need the best RB's in the backfield, or Nicely/Moore are going to get creamed. And Rossi could be the #1 guy as easily as any of those 3. So I'm stereotyping by saying Rossi could be a power back, like Hillis, a true tail back like Gerhart, or a speed back like Hendry? How is that stereotyping? Only in your warped world... Damn, it is impossible to discuss anything with you. You are such a victim, BuckZip. Glad the "owners" and moderators of this forum set examples of moderation, civility and keeping this non-personal. They can never be accused of setting the tone that allows for all the vindictive, personal trashing that goes on at ZNO.

I think Rossi chose Akron because ICoach gave him his word that he would be given a chance to play RB. If he was going to play LB, he could have chosen bigger and better programs. So....if ICoach is going to have any credibility in future recruiting guys like Rossi...he HAS to allow him compete at RB. Hopefully Rossi will see that he can get on the field quicker at LB and request the change. Also...I believe it is easier to learn defensive positions than offensive. That is another reason to start him on offense....he can always switch to defense during the season. I predict that Chisolm and Alexander will do well at RB and Rossi will request the switch to LB after 2-3 games.
  17. Seems wrong to me. Number two in the MAC? Behind the Golden Felons? And where is Western Mich with five returning starters? Behind let's Ball State? Surely (and don't call me Shirley) WMU is not number one. Or, are they? The Felons out of the top 144? Not likely. So, this writer picks the Felons over the loaded Zips. He is completely wrong. Gilliam is in no way going to play at the small forward. Chauncey is a big two guard in a big line up. Harney has the small forward spot. At least the writer/evaluator has Diggs as the do it right sixth man. But, not for the right reasons. Quincey could well start. In fact, he may. In fact, Q will start some games. But, at the wing guard where his height and skills make him more valuable. Jumping up to number ninety might seem a far stretch to some, but, it falls short in my eyes. NIT? That is not the goal of these kids. Sweet sixteen or better is the goal. You all heard Tree. Truth is, both Akron and the Felons could end up in the NCAA tourney. And, I would not count out a rarer than rare third MAC bid. The conference is about to have a great season. Yeah, yeah, like I know anything. Living in Bali Indonesia doesn't allow for the use of recreational drugs as it is a Muslim nation and has rather strict drug laws. But now that I am in the USofA for a while...I would like to try some of what you are using. Do you mind sharing??
  18. I think the worst thing the Marketing Department (any Marketing Dept.) can do is oversell their product. I am sure everyone as heard "under sell and over deliver" but I really think it it true and is entirely applicable here. I go to baseball spring training games not caring about a win or loss…but want to see what the new guys look like and if the veterans are in shape and healthy. I go to the current Cav’s games to see the development of individual players and to see who can fit long term. My expectations are not built on winning. But if I go to a Mount Union game…I expect to see a victory. Building the proper expectation is a delicate thing. You can’t tell your fan base “we suck this year and may lose all our games as we start the rebuilding process”. I do believe that is why it was so quiet last year. Better to say nothing at all. I think fan expectations are reasonable this year…I have only seen predictions of 4-5 games. No one is calling anyone a “loser” this year for having expectations of a sub 500 season. I think the most important thing in rebuilding is getting some buy in from your fan base and not alienating your core group of fans. In that regard….the marketing department (and the Administration) has not done a good job. Hopefully they will learn from their mistakes…no one is perfect but making the same mistakes over again is what will be hard to overcome.
  19. The SEC doesn't HAVE to do anything or NOT do anything regardless of deadlines or penalties. You jumped the gun a bit on announcing that A&M was leaving for the SEC, and now you're jumping the gun on saying they aren't. I think Andy Staples may have had you in mind when he wrote THIS. I think the MAC needs to strike while the iron is hot, and bring in Texas A&M and Clemson. That will boost the MAC's RPI and give the Zips a better shot at that Big East invite. The dominoes are all falling into place.... If you can twitter Zach....we can actually start the ball rolling!!!
  20. If you are trying to be funny, this isn't funny. I assume you are talking about Mexicans. I work in the construction industry. If it wasn't for the Mexicans, nothing would get done. There are basically three type of people working on a job site: whites, blacks and Mexicans. Let's say there is a reroofing project on a home. This is how it goes down with these three groups and then you will understand why Mexicans are on every job site. I was told this by a guy who is president of a roofing company in Charleston so everyone knows where it is coming from. The white guy shows up hungover, turns his boom box up as loud as it will go and uses profanity every other word. At the end of the day, he asks for an advance on his pay so he can go get drunk again. The white guy is bad for business because the housewife who had to listen to the boom box and profanity all day tells the owner and all of her neighbors about what happened. The black guy drinks like the white guy only instead of the boom box and profanity, he spends half of his day arguing with his boss about everything under the sun as if a job site is a civil rights debate. He's bad for business too because he only does half a days work and gets paid for a full day. The Mexican guy shows up for work on time, keeps his mouth shut and does his job well as hard and as fast as he can until the job is done. No boom box, he might be using profanity, but nobody would understand it because they don't speak English and they don't talk to each other because they are too busy working. At the end of the day, he goes home to his wife and kid and shows up for work on time again the next morning without a hangover. Accepts he gets paid on a certain day and doesn't ask for advances. We are lucky to have Mexicans here. The immigrant groups in this country know more about what the American dream is than the groups who have been here a long time. We have become a lazy and entitled society. If you are worried about people sucking up resources, you should worry about the legions of white Baby Boomers who have not saved a dime for retirement and will be asking the government to suport them as they get old. They will become a huge voting block and will get everything they ask for like they have their entire spoiled and entitled lives. The Boomers could not, nor would they do what the Mexicans do. Wet-back = illegal immigrants. 15% of all in-state college students in the California system are illegal immigrants (estimated 125M in state subsidies...not including any Federal subsidies). My company tried to terminate an illegal worker because we found out there were discrepancies with his documentation...we gave him 30 days to correct the I9 documents. Because...you can't fire someone because they are illegal....the government recommends terminating them because they lied on their application. So...that is what we did. 2 days prior to the deadline he just disappeared. But he filed for unemployment and was awarded it in CA. We appealed on 2 counts...1. he left voluntarily without notice and 2. he was an illegal undocumented worker. We lost the appeal. We lost the second and final appeal and the guy is still collecting unemployment benefits. So don't get holier than though with me...just read my posts and get the facts when you want to debate. I employee 5 people in Indonesia, 5 people in South America and the guy who runs my California business is a native Costa Rican (who I consider a close friend). Immigrants are what makes this country great. But I reserve the right to say who can sleep in my house and who can eat from my table. I think the US should have the same right. Sounds like you are a bit of bigoted racist. I know many of good Black and Hispanic workers and many good and bad White workers. But color and creed are meaningless. My wife is a Balinese Hindu, my ex-wife Catholic and some of my best friends Jewish. The end.
  21. I do drink red, white and blue. The Labatt Blue packaging has a blue background, white lettering and a red maple leaf. Canadian ehhhh? I like Canada. Some of the things they do there make it almost like another country. Yea...Canada has one big advantage to the US. No wet-backs driving the economy into the ditch and sucking up resources of hard working people. And they make some good beer. Hockey is good too.
  22. We are a "right now" culture, but there is a bigger picture with the mac that doesn't play into that. The mas has been around since 1946. It can't seem to get it right. The goal should be to have the best mac we can possible have with the expectation being it will never catch up, because history shows it isn't capable of catching up to the bcs conferences. We are in the mac. That's where we belong until we are forced elsewhere, or the mac's member schools wake up and take control of their future. Yes...the MAC has been around a long time. But they never wanted to compete for the national title in Football preferring to focus on academics. Their goal was to be the "David" in the David and Goliath scenario with occasional upsets of major programs. To assure that they would not compete at the top....they gave 10 less scholarships that the big schools thinking that a significant enough disadvantage that coaches and ADs would be discouraged from even trying. They reduced the amount to 5 less in the 70's (not sure of exact date) as they were falling to far behind. They currently give the same amount of scholarships as the big conferences. You can track the changes in amount of scholarships to the mandatory attendance figures mandated by the NCAA and the increased money available. The MAC strived to be a Midwestern, rural campuses with high academics. That changed as the landscape of big money bowls came into existence. You can't join something and then complain that you do not like the rules. Kinda like the Muslims who come here and want to change the legal system to Sharia. You are always free to leave.
  23. Dave, I've followed Akron athletics for the past forty years. There is actually LESS community interest today than there was in 1975 (largely because the city has lost 1/3 of its population). The attendance absolute ceiling for basketball is 5-6000 (ave.) even if you brought Madison Square Garden to S Main. For football it is 20k, regardless of how many games they win. GP-1 and I agree on one thing, Akron is not a good place to build a retail base of consumers. More generally, I must say, I've done everything in my power to avoid reading news about changes in college athletics. It is all constructed on the strength of BCS audience capacity and future growth. Those of us with no dog in the race (e.g., the entire MAC), have nothing to gain from it. Even if the blow-up occured tomorrow, it is unlikely any MAC schools would be seen as Big East caliber -- and frankly Akron would have to stand in line behind at least Ohio, Toledo and Miami. Conference USA is barely more than a parallel move, with significant increased costs. As I've said time and again, the Akron Zips are a typical MAC athletic program -- and there ain't nuthin wrong with that! Let's wait till we're "too big" for our current surroundings before even thinking about moving anywhere. Amen to that!!!! Typical of the "right now" culture in the US...we want everything today. But outside Akron, most will not see the Zips in the same light as those on this forum. My recommendation would be to build incrementally with a solid, repeatable formula/process. The conference affiliation will take care of itself.
  24. I agree...caution and a dose of reality is needed. And you have done that. But your constant posting on the issue comes across more of advocating a point of view. Better to advise caution a few times and if people fail to pick up your recommendation you can always say "I told you so" But the constant advocating against the opposing view makes you come across as unwilling to compromise, see other people views and worst of all....allow others to have a point of view different than your own. I understand that is the norm now in US culture and is often the pervasive view here. I say “relax” and enjoy the enthusiasm. There was none last few years in BBall …or any sport other than soccer. I hope it translates to better support of the teams.
  25. I don't know who we will be playing, but I hope we schedule Carleton, Saskatchewan, and Dalhousie or teams of their caliber. I fear we will instead schedule teams like Chabot, Ohlone, and Siskiyous. Regardless, the extra practice time should be beneficial. Well, the schedule turns out to have a little of both with a tendency towards the weak side. The last game against Carleton could be interesting. The first 4 against Sheridan, Quebec, McGill and the Champlain hasbeens should be name the score outings for the Zips. I'm interested in the game against Carleton. They have won seven of the last nine CIS (the Canadian NCAA) national championships. They had an 87-game winning streak going from 2003-2006. How we do against them will tell us a lot about our team. The four games preceding this one are pretty much just to figure out a basic depth chart. I don't believe the trip is meant to sort out the depth chart. Two guys (Harney and Treadwell) are prop 48 guys who only played HS ball for 1 year and have not played in over a year. They are very raw talents. As I understand, they were prop 48 kids because of lack of discipline and not lack of intelligence (and are coachable from what I hear and read). So you have 2 high ceiling kids that have little experience and undisciplined....they need coaching and playing time. The other freshman on the team can use the coaching time and experience as well. Since you can only take advantage of the "International" trip extra practice/coaching once every 4 years, this was a good time to avail themselves of the option. This trip is all about getting a chance to coach and teach kids who are new to the program and getting a chance to bond as a team.
