Is the VMI game the last straw for Ianello?
Doug Snyder replied to bobbyake's topic in Akron Zips Football
I think the Zips win big. One of us will be wrong. I expect the that the loser will be man enough to say they were wrong and willing to change their opinion. You can count on that from me if you are correct. Have you ever hired anyone?? Most will rely on personal observations and experiences. I do not have a problem with TW using personal experience to help make a high risk decision. People make mistakes....he may have made one. But to make that determination now is not something that is not prudent or wise. TW has also done many good things. I am willing to wait until the end of the season to make any judgments on the football situation. -

How did that work out???A whole lot better than our game. Even without Vick for almost 1/2 the game.AHHHHH....so you are saying you cannot win without stellar QB play??? I did not know a 6'0" mobile QB was so important to the outcome. One would think he was to short and could not see over the line to be effective. I can't keep all the facts straight on here...sorry. -

Huggins left because going to Div1 in football forces us out of the OVC ... a conference with an automatic bid in the NCAA tournament. Huggins did not have problems with the football team....just its impact on the basketball team and its ability to get into the NCAA tournament. You are right though that the decision to go to Div1 ultimately drove Huggins away. If we could have joined a NCAA bid conference after leaving the OVC he would have stayed....but he would have eventually leave because he wanted the chance to compete at the highest level. -

TW is one thing, but Dr Proenza seems like he does not care. That's what disappoints me the most. At this point, he needs to show his face to what Zips fans there are and make a statement of some sort. In fact, he should be standing at the Infocision entrance this Saturday personally thanking all those who show up. Hiding is not leadership.Just because he isn't visibly micromanaging doesn't mean he isn't leading. We have LP to thank for the new stadium and support of the football program. LP could have killed the football program before the new stadium was built, and I believe there was talk of this because of the lack of our success at the D-1A level and the cost of a new stadium. That didn't happen though. We have LP to thank for a greatly increased overall support of the Department of Athletics and all the facilities enhancements that have happened as a result. I guarantee LP was instrumental in keeping Coach Porter here long term...and Coach Dambrot.Until LP comes out publicly and says TW is running the ship (which won't happen), you have no right to question his leadership. Things like this debacle are handled behind closed doors, and that's still leadership...in fact, I would say it is the most crucial kind of leadership. Being a leader when everything is going well is easy.Well said (or written)

Dave:He is still here. How can we move on? Really....isn't that last comment what is wrong with the culture in the USofA right now?? We had Bush...and his haters could not move on. Now we have Obama and his haters cannot move on. Seriously...find a way. -

I am with you 100% I took my daughter to the women's soccer match yesterday and we had to move from where we were sitting because of the fans. My daughter is 3+ years old. But the fans who trail the opposing goalie to either end and harass her in the most vile way are missing the point of sportsmanship. I could not keep my daughter there and have her hear that. Maybe it is OK to harass a male goalie that way but a little more decorum should be used with a woman. I apologized to the goalie after the game for our fans behavior. -

I had a friend in college who had the motto as it related to picking up girls, "Go ugly early and avoid the rush". He figured he was never going to get a good looking girl and waiting around all night to get one would just leave him at the bar at 2 AM trying to pick up an ugly girl who nobody wanted earlier but now they look good to everyone. Why not just go for the ugly girl early and get it over with when the odds are in your favor?MAClike conferences need to build their own ugly girl before it is too late. We are all going to be stuck standing around with our peckers in our hands if we aren't careful. My friends had a different approach. We went to the bar very late and picked up drunk girls who saw us as more attractive and we did not spend a dime on their drinks. Way more effeciant and economcal. I actually think the same approach should be used in this issue as well. There is always more than one successful approach. -

I really don't care what these silly little reports say. There is an old saying, "There are lies, damn lies and statistics". They are good enough for the Big Ten. I didn't know the Exercise Science degrees Big Ten players were getting are that hard to get.Does that "take my word for it" approach fly at home or work?? Just because you claim to be the "Great One" does not make it true and it probably will not fly here either. -
He's not only a bad coach, he is stubborn as hell. He has a game plan, he sticks to it, and REFUSES to make adjustments. First of all as bad as Nicely and Moore are, they are not Pro style offense QB's. They both flourish out of the shotgun, especially with a line that gives you one second to pass. By the time our QB's drop back they have 4-5 defenders ready to hit them and receivers draped with coverage. Second, we have a talented RB but he cannot run up the gut without a line. The defenses we face KNOW where he's running and know they stop it. Resulting in 1 yard runs. Was it any surprise that the 1 time 44 ran to the outside he picked up 30+? I guarantee that wasn't a designed run to the outside. Chances are he was supposed to run up the gut and said hell with it, gained 30 yards and probably got yelled at by Ianello on the sideline.LOL Your kidding right?? You want to stand in the shotgun and you expect the running game will be better?? Oh...by the way...Chisolm averaged 5 yards per carry today. Many runs are designed to go "up the gut" and break outside. You guys are making a mistake or do not know much about offensive football strategy. The shotgun allows the QBs eyes to be on the defense and therefore allow him to get the ball to the right receiver based on what the defense is doing (hopefully). It DOES NOT GET THE BALL OUT QUICKER. We are not a 5 step drop team. Yes...we are a pro style offense. But we are more a "West Coast" pro style because of the quick 3-4 step drops and quick throws. Going to a “spread” and starting from the shotgun will not give the QB more time. Let’s see….Miami, Ohio, and Temple appear to be the class of the league and they do not use the “spread”. We are taking the same path as Temple and Miami… just hope we have the same success.Looks like the Zips missed a turn a while back. You may be correct but I will withold my judgement until the end of the year.

Clayton Moore Transitions from JUCO to DI-A

I don't know if Nicely has gotten a fair shot in a game this year to prove his stuff. Today I think it was a case of giving Moore time to get his head straight but in that time, Nicely seemed to be doing OK. Why pull him and put Moore back in right away? Honestly, I think our O-Line is so bad that RI thinks we NEED to have Moore in there to give the QB position an additional dimension. Like some of the preseason stuff said, Nicely might not make as many mistakes but Moore can make things happen. Maybe those mistakes caused the blowout today? Deep down, part of me also wonders if RI's ego is kicking in here and Nicely won't see the field until the game is out of hand or Moore gets hurt?I hope the game next week helps this team build some confidence. I think Moore should still be the starter but Nicely should also not be on such a short leash. Until today Moore seemed to do a pretty good job of keeping those "DOAH" moments in check. If mistakes become a problem, Nicely should be given a chance. OK?? OK??? he was 1-6 with 7 yards and an interception I wish people would have the same standards and expectations for Moore.I think he had 5 DROPS so if you add those in its 6-6 with one interception,,and that was from stepping up and being hit when releasing the ball. Everyone was ALL OVER The LONE RANGER saying how he was going ot save this team. Well he hasnt. He has now seen what Nicely had to go through last year getting sacked and dropped balls,, but CM is still making mental mistakes. Coach I I bet was hoping CM would do good and he could blame last season on PN7. Looks like Coach I is the one who laid the egg,, Poor play calling, poor coaching, poor motivation by COACH I. Give PN7 the start this next week and see what happens. What can you expect with NICELY when he gets demoted to 2nd string and then all of a suden you throw him in the the #1 receivers. Let Lone Ranger go sit on hsi horse this week and lets see how Nicely does things. he has had time to sit an observe. HE didnt have that luxury last year because there was no depth at QB.. Hang in there PN7 They way RI has screwed you over by pushing the Lone Ranger, then putting you into Temple with a few minutes left, and then throw you in for a few series and take you out this past week,, You get a VIP pass into Heaven,,because you have already been thru hell. And another thing DOES ANYONE every go to the COACH I lunch meetings, I would be GLAD to see how he spins this6-6 with one interception?? I am guessing you were not a math major huh?? -

Dave...I am so disappointed in you. It is right in front of you and you can’t see it!!!. NICE does = good. Nicely is a nice guy and therefore GOOD. Moore has been a bad guy and therefore BAD. There is no real statistical evidence that supports that claim so that must be it.Seriously... I thought Nicely would have started the season. But I assumed Moore would have taken over before the Cincy game or after as I assumed the outcomes would have been the same and it would be a good time for the change. Moore could come in as the "white knight" with a clean slate. But I think they went with Moore because they believed his development would be faster if he played. The game will surely slow down for him next week. Today was an abortion...no excuses. I hope he can recover. One thing is for sure...they have little to no confidence that Nicely can get the job done. It must be difficult for him...he does seem like a nice guy. If he wants to play, I would transfer after this year. But...I can't find fault with their thinking as I do not believe Nicely is accurate and does not have the leadership qualities needed (and please spare me the "leads by example" comments). If Moore is as good as many thought...he will figure it out. If not...this will be a long year. To be honest...I did not think we would win any of the first 3 games. I did think we would be far more competitive. The biggest disappointment has been the O-line. I was sure the skill position would far exceed what people thought on this forum (and almost all thought they would be weak). But I was not aware of the problem on the O-line. Hopefully they can improve because little, if any, improvement will come in the QB position if they do not.I wish our by week was after the VMI game. We need time to heal after these last 3 games and to regroup. FIU is stronger than expected and Ohio is too. Ohio likes to run the ball and I thought our improves front 7 could contain them for a win. Now...I am not sure. They are stronger than expected and we are weaker than I expected...and we have some injuries. It really in imperative that we get at least 5 victories or recruiting will be difficult.I still support ICoach and will thru this year. I have season tickets and will continue to buy them even when I return to Bali. $120 per ticket is not that much to support my team and school. I don't get all the complaints about ticket prices. ICoach may not have been my first choice and he may have been (or still is) over his head. But he is MY coach now and I do believe he is bright enough to figure it out. It is in the UofA's best interest for ICoach to succeed and I still believe he will. But these first 3 games have been brutal...especially the last 2. -

okay what about the pick 6's he just chucks it up just like he did in juco that wont get it done hereWhat is your relation to Nicely? Seriously. They're equally terrible, but we've already seen almost two full seasons of Nicely terrible. I'd like at least a half season of Moore terrible before I call for the other awful guy.+ 1 -

Some of you need to understand something. We may have no choice in the matter. It may not be us dropping. It may be us getting dropped by the BCS level schools wheny they start their own division. There are a limited number of schools with a limited number of scholarships at the BCS level. If a player wants to play college football and all of the scholarships are taken up at the BCS level, he'll have to go somewhere. Our division would be the next best thing. It's already happening. With all that is going on in college football, change is needed. Either we make the change with like schools or we get handed the change. Better to make your own change than allowing someone to make changes for you.If the BCS schools leave the NCAA, who knows if the scholarship limit will remain intact. If they bump it back up to 120, us "smaller programs" will be doubly hosed. Greed is alive and well so I would expect it to happen.I doubt it will happen. less than 1/2 of the BCS schools are profitable and adding 35 scholarships will be very expensive. Remember...they would be obligated to increase women’s sports to be in compliance with title IX...adding more to the costs. And they may be paying players a salary (or allowance). Remember...if the BCS does leave...it WILL be about the money. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Title_IXI do not think it would be bad for the UofA in football if they created their own division...but basketball would suffer. Those who see us eventually competing for the national title will be disappointed (and delusional) -

If the big 10 expands to 16 I think they will target Ptt, Syracuse, Rutgers and Notre Dame. Notre Dame will not be able to remain independent if conferences go to 16. Looks like they may lose Pitt and Syracuse. Stay tuned...lots f fun coming our way ;-) -

Interesting. Makes sense for football and basketball. The ACC isn't quite the basketball conference it used to be and those two will compete well. The football is average. Boston College has done well in football since joining the ACC. I see Pitt and Syracuse doing the same thing.I always thought Pitt and WVU would be natural fits for the Big Ten.geographically maybe...not academically. Pitt...yes -

Against Temple and OSWho. ....when we played Temple last year, we were SHUT OUT !!....when we played OSU last time, our Offense was SHUT OUT !!So, as I keep saying all along, please explain to me why we are any worse off because we're taking a chance with a new QB to see if we can turn things around? Nicely's results in games against Temple and Kentucky last year reveal the following(aggregate):1. Completion %........... 42.2%2. Yard per throw......... 4.243. Yards....................... 191 4. TD............................ 05. Interceptions............ 1I think it would be moronic to compare Moore's first 2 games (against the 2 best teams on the schedule) with Nicely's complete season last year. Is anybody really suggesting that?? In a comparison of like games last year (not Nicely's first 2 games) show that Moore is right where Nicely was after 10+ games starting under his belt. -

IMO TBD.DZ.. Do you have a similar analysis after 2 games last year of Nicely?? That would be an interesting comparison. -
Fantastic question. The reason I don't watch any football below the level of the MAC is I find the base athletic and performance abilities of the players insufficient to hold my attention for more than five minutes.I went to a high school football game last Friday because a friend of mine has a son starting for a local high school and I promised I would go to a game. At halftime, I wanted to scratch my eyes out. It was absolute torture for me. I feel the same sensation when I watch DIII, II and 1-AA football on television. Maybe they are all nice kids, but I could care less...we are all supposed to be nice people and do the right thing. When that television goes on, I want to see a high level of athletic ability and skill. I'm not watching to feel good about SAT scores. People who watch games for those reasons remind me of the same people who think Terry Pluto is a good sports commentator.LOL I go to a different HS game each week. I like to see kids try and learn the game, the difference team discipline can have and future stars. And I like Terry Pluto. Like I have always said...if you are a hammer...everything looks like a nail.

I'm not in either camp because I haven't seen a good, thorough analysis of which strategy has the best success rate. If there was solid data supporting the fact that the success rate of lower level college head coaches moving to a higher level was much higher than higher level assistants moving to head coaching positions, I'd be more inclined to lean that way.Obviously there are successful and unsuccessful examples of each. Ultimately you have to thoroughly analyze the individual candidates and weigh that along with the factor of which camp tends to have the higher percentage of success. That would be an enormous undertaking to say the least. If you're volunteering, here's a data point to follow Of course either approach is a crap shoot. I like the idea that a head coach in a lower division at least was forced at one time to make all of the key decisions for a (presumably) successful program. I'm also more prone to consider the guy who doesn't merely take the reigns for a team that has already established a consistent level of success. The coach who takes nothing (or very little) and makes something out of it (Leavitt, Golden, Winters, Cristobal, Edsell, etc.) are the ones who impress me the most. But it's only my opinion. I wish there was a study out there on this subject. With all of the money riding on these hires, you sure think there would be. I think we are following the Golden "play book" to success.
-
I agree. I don't see why we are playing CFU and FIU in the same season and what that is trying to accomplish. Why are we playing top level Big Ten teams and not the Minnesotas and Indianas of the world. How about Duke or Wake or Kansas or Kansas State or Iowa State or Colorado State or New Mexico? Hell, get NC State back on the schedule...I saw them last weekend and they are going nowhere in a hurry. Michigan?...They will be loaded by the time we get around to playing them. Notre Dame and Pitt in the same season I don't like.I agree with what you are saying about scheduling the lower to mid-level BCS conference teams if we are serious about trying to build the program by getting some nationally noteworthy wins. Apparently though Coach Ianello and the powers that be in the program are opting for the other option, namely scheduling for recruiting first and wins second.Make no mistake about it this schedule was put together with recruiting in mind. The MAC level high school prospects would much rather go up against the Penn States, Michigans, and Tennessees of the world than the Dukes, Iowa States, and Minnesotas out there. Plus, games with UCF and FIU give Akron more noteriety in Florida where Ianello undobtedly had many connections while the cheif recruiter at Notre Dame.Personally, I would rather see us go the route where we pick up wins over lower BCS competition and build our way up to bigger opponents because it means the potential for more wins. However, I can't argue against the fact that better recruits are needed as well and that this schedule will help. I don't know that there is only one right way. I just hope that the program gets to a point where MAC titles and bowl berts are possible and even expected in the not too distant future.Good point...especially about Florida. We still need a few wins to make the strategy work.
-
Very good point. It's just too bad we don't do more things with winning in mind.I would argue that we do have winning in mind if we are trying to improve recruiting. It just means the time frame is long term vs short term. That does not sit well in a "right now" culture in the USofA. If that is the goal...I hope we are successful....or at least see the light at the end of the tunnel soon.

There are people (some in this forum) who think that the primary purpose of sports is to "entertain" us. For those...there should be no complaint that it is all about money.I love the Army-Navy game (joined the Navy to fly). The game is NOT about money as the participants play the game for honor and pride. None expect to play football as a career and most will soon be off representing our country. Most of the people at the game do not pay for their ticket as students get in free and most of the fans at the game are students.I think Lee Adams asked the question of conservatives "how many complain about big government like to take advantage of the free education" (or something close). A similar question can be asked here...how many who complain of "big money" in sports actually go see games at schools like Mount Union and Walsh where the game has nothing to do about money?? GP1 is often telling us about big-time games he goes to from other conferences. Why do we never hear about the small schools he watches??
