  2. http://www.ohiomm.com/blogs/zips/2010/06/k...ce-requirement/ http://www.90Can't State.com/index "Is it possible that Akron's closest rival will be sanctioned for poor fan support? Can't State is making a marketing push to get 90,000 fans into the Dix Stadium this year. (The logo below and an accompanying Web site were leaked to me by a Can't State staff member.) Ninety-thousand represents the total needed to meet the NCAA's requirement of averaging 15,000 fans per home game (paid or actual attendance). If you believe the announced attendance (and I don't), Can't State barely scraped that figure last year at 93,432. You would think that, because Akron-Can't is at Dix Stadium this year, 90,000 should be attainable. But when you look at the rest of the schedule, it's not a slam-dunk. Akron vs. Can't usually attracts about 20,000. That means Can't's other five games have to average about 14,000 each. Four of the other home games are scheduled for Oct. 30 or later. The fifth home game is against Murray State. No team other than Akron (and maybe Ohio) is likely to bring any of its own fans. Akron's attendance last season was 104,294. Unlike in previous years when attendance was embarrassingly inflated, I actually think that number is legit. Don't take a sigh of relief, though. It was the opening season for InfoCision Stadium. Akron-Can't was a home game. The Zips welcomed their first Big Ten visitor (Indiana). Also, aside from the Eastern Michigan game, the weather was pretty good each week. Akron's outlook in 2010 will depend on how the team is doing at the end of the season. If the Zips are contending for the MAC East, they will have two winnable games against Miami and Buffalo to finish the schedule, and fans are likely to take interest. If the Zips have a conference record of 1-5 or 2-4 heading into those games, nobody is going to show up to watch meaningless football in the chilly late November. This is the reason we hired Tom Wistrcill. What happens if you drop below the 15,000 average for two straight seasons? No one knows for sure because the NCAA has not had to enforce it. Generally, a university buys up the tickets necessary to reach compliance before it gets to that point. The NCAA has threatened to take away FBS status if the problem persists long enough. With the economy in Northeast Ohio not permitting a whole lot of discretionary spending, the attendance issue is something to watch for both Akron and Can't fans this fall.."

  4. "In other basketball developments, Dambrot said that Cleveland State and Youngstown State will be on the home schedule for the 2010-11 season. The meeting with Cleveland State is part of a four-game agreement with the Vikings, who are coached by former Can't State coach Gary Waters. " http://www.ohio.com/sports/zips/91994134.html

  9. Worst College Football Bowl NamesThe GMAC Bowl. (Central Michigan v. Troy, Jan. 6, Mobile, Ala.) Would anybody tune in to watch something called the AIG Bowl? Well GMAC is barely in better shape. This troubled lender has received $12.5 billion in taxpayer bailout money and is one of only a few big companies still limping along, unable to pay back the money. Somebody please explain how this sorry performance exemplifies the ideals of college athletics. The Roady's Humanitarian Bowl. (Bowling Green v. Idaha, Dec. 30, Boise.) Good sportsmanship, which this bowl promotes, wouldn't be the same without a corporate sponsor. And when Americans think of humanitarianism, the first thing that comes to mind is a Roady's truck stop.
  10. This happened to UNC, too. They went into PKs with NCST in the ACC semis and it counted as a tie, but they lost, so technically, they now have 4 losses. Does this effect our NCAA history record? The undefeated run is over at 23-0-1link"The result goes down as a tie, leaving Akron (23-0-1) deadlocked with Indiana’s 1997 team for the NCAA record for most consecutive wins in a season."

  12. Rob IanelloPosition:Asst. HC - Offense/Receivers/Recruiting Coordinator Alma Mater:The Catholic University of America '87 Promoted to assistant head coach (offense) in January 2009 and will lead offensive staff meetings when head coach Charlie Weis is not present. A member of the Irish coaching staff since 2005, he has coached five of the most prolific receiving seasons in Notre Dame history as well as coordinated four-straight top-15 recruiting classes. As the recruiting coordinator for the Irish, he directed three consecutive top-10 recruiting classes from 2006-08, something only three other schools (USC, Florida and Georgia) could claim. He is also the only coach named one of the 25-best recruiters in the country each of the last five years by Rivals.com. In the book The Second Season by recruiting analyst Tom Lemming, Ianello is named one of the top-10 recruiters of the last 30 years. Under his guidance, five of the eight best individual receiving seasons in Notre Dame history have occurred. In the past four seasons, four Irish receivers have caught more than 60 passes in a season, while five players have eclipsed 1,000 receiving yards. Notre Dame's records for most receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns by a freshman, sophomore, junior and senior have all been recorded under his watch. He has played a crucial role in helping the Irish record the three-most prolific passing seasons in school history In 2008, Golden Tate and Michael Floyd rewrote the record book for freshman and sophomore receivers at Notre Dame. Tate tallied 58 receptions for 1,080 yards and 10 TDs while Floyd registered 48 catches for 719 yards and seven TDs. Freshmen and sophomores combined to make 18 starts in 2007 and caught 88 passes for 1.021 yards and six TDs. Duval Kamara set freshman records (broken in '08 by Floyd) for receptions and receiving yards in a season. Jeff Samardzija, Maurice Stovall and Rhema McKnight captivated Irish fans in 2005-06. Samardzija set school records with 1,249 receiving yards and 15 TDs in '05 and 77 receptions in '06. His 179 career catches for 2,593 yards and 27 TDs are Irish records. Stovall caught 69 passes for 1,149 yards and 11 TDs in '05, the second-most receiving yards in a single season in school history. McKnight tied Samardzija's school record with 15 receiving TDs in '06 and the two combined to lead the nation with 27 receiving TDs. He coached at Wisconsin for two years prior to joining Notre Dame and helped lead the Badgers to the 2003 Music City Bowl and 2005 Outback Bowl. At Wisconsin, helped develop Owen Daniels from a recruited quarterback into a tight end. Daniels is now one of the top receiving tight ends in the NFL. Served as recruiting coordinator and wide receivers coach at Arizona and helped develop Bobby Wade and Dennis Northcutt. Wade led the Pacific-10 Conference with 93 receptions for 1,389 yards and eight TDs in 2002, while Northcutt caught 88 passes in 1999. In 1999, he was named one of the top-10 recruiters in the nation by ESPN.com and one of the top six recruiters nationally by Sporting News. Helped Arizona's 1998 squad to a 12-1 record and number four national ranking. He was elected to the board of trustees of the American Football Coaches Association in January 2003. The board formulates policy and provides direction for the AFCA. Ianello also charis the AFCA's assistant coaches committee and is the general chairman of the AFCA's all-division assistant coaches committee. Born Nov. 4, 1965, he is a native of Port Chester, N.Y., and is a 1987 graduate of The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. with a bachelor's degree in English. He and his wife, the former Denise Dove, have one son, Zachary, and two daughters, Ashley and Courtney. Denise is a former assistant women's basketball coach at Arizona and Wisconsin and is now a scout in the WNBA.

  15. WHOA there, K-Roo. The misguided athletic director in question was DAVE ADAMS, not Ken MacDonald. Ken MacDonald was the long-time Akron Sports Information Director and a Jim Dennison man through and through. You are correct... missed that... corrected the post...anybody want to throw in Coleman Crawford/ Dan Hipsher Basketball disappointments -- feel free... like losing in the MAC tourney 1st round at home over and over.... or soccer losing the home field last year in NCAA Tourney...
  16. Welcome to all the newcomers!... this is what it feels like -- and always has felt like -- to be a Zips fan. Long-timers please chime in and help me out here.Lets list all the disappointing seasons we have endured over the years....I'll start:Dateline 1986 -- AD **Dave Adams ** (corrected) SID Ken McDonald and Pres Wm J Muse decide UA Football should move up from IAA to IA. Hire Gerry Faust to coach the Zips. "Promote" Dennison to AD. We leave the OVC to do so but we neglect to look at OVC rules and all other sports have to go Independent too... Leads to Bob Huggins going to Cincinnati soon after. Faust goes 7-4 in the transition year as ESPN comes to Akron for a Thurs Nite and brodcasts Murray State vs Akron. Faust makes some calls and picks up a lot of games from SMU Death Penalty...Auburn, Florida, Tenessee, etc .etc. The spankings begin. The goal of moving to the old Big East never materializes. Akron joins the illustroious NEC Conference in all other sports (incl basketball). New rivals include Mt St Mary's, and two St Francises, Quinnipiac, Monmouth... etc. A few months later, we leave the NEC for the MAC all-sports. The football team is decimated by transfers -- players who were recruited under the "Grand Plan" didn't bargain for the MAC... Faust records fall off even against MAC opponents.... and he's fired.Replaced by Owens.

  18. Looks Like Elton reads ZipsNation.....oh.. and nice update on nate Linhart in Austria....Go Panthers!Panthers Nate ProfileElton Article"Just an FYI: In a recent blog we reported that, after the first weekend, Zeke Marshall does not look like a starter. Somehow, in various chatrooms, that has been equated to mean Zeke Marshall does not look like a player. There is no question the 7-0, 215-pound center can play. But after the first weekend of practice, he was not ready to start. Nothing more, nothing less. Those who covet instant information should take it in the context it is given. Basketball season does not start for another month. A lot can change, although a jump in weight for Marshall is probably not one of them. Shy of sudden interest in a redshirt year, he is going to play. To say he can expect to be physically tested, does not mean the highly-recruited Marshall won't be better skilled or more polished than his veteran Mid-American Conference opponents. But if the one - and perhaps only - advantage MAC opposition will have over him is experience and sinew, wouldn't you expect them to use it? Three of the returning MAC East division centers were on teams that won 19 or more games last season. Another anchored a team that won 17. If Marshall is going to be Freshman of The Year in the MAC, he will certainly earn the honor. The Zips scrimmage themselves Friday. The Zeke Marshall story could be completely different by then. Whatever the case may be, this is going to be a three- or four-year journey for the Zips. However good Marshall will ultimately be, it's not going to happen in a week or even a month, and probably not a year. However, he will get there."

  20. OK.. maybe pic is bad example .. how about these???I'm talking about when the offensive player uses the face gear to break a tackle... not inadvertently .. but as a technique.
  21. this is a personal foul or at least illegal hands to the face penalty.. I see runningbacks do this on every play.. as they make contact, they grab for the defender's face gear and rip his head off.... announcers call it a "Stiff Arm." I say its a dangerous play and should be penalized...What do you think??
