  1. https://gozips.com/news/2021/4/7/mens-soccer-sobhys-golden-goal-lifts-akron-past-west-virginia-in-2ot-3-2.aspx "That was unbelievable, the guts, the heart, I hope people appreciate how special that was," Akron head coach Jared Embick commented. "We have had guys train two days since March 17 having to play minutes, guys just grinding it out, nowhere near full fitness from what we have been having to go through. To gut it out, to grind it out, to stick together and play, I hope people really realize that probably was one of the most special efforts I have ever seen from a team. I'm incredibly proud."
  2. Gutsy effort by the short handed zips great win
  3. Article in the Sunday morning Beacon...said that the Zips would be without 5 players...that were not cleared yet to play https://niuhuskies.com/documents/2021/4/4/Game_11_NIU_3_Akron_1.pdf From looking at the minutes played in the box score above....here are some of the key regulars/key subs that I do not see 1. Marco Milanese 2. Pol Hernandez 3. Will Jackson 4. Jason Shokalook 5. Johnny Fitzgerald 6. Federico Serra 7. Nick Scott that is a lot of talent...to be missing Sunday Beacon article...said that 3 players only got to practice for the first time in over 2 weeks on Saturday I was doing Easter family things today...and did not see the game... I am not making excuses for the team....but Bowling Green, the league leader with a 3-1 record...has also had to postpone 3 games due to Covid... Bowling Green will face similar issues .....to what Akron did today......when they are able to return BGSU will not be sharp when they return...and they will lose some matches Akron still gets to play them one more time (beat them 2-0 in MAC opener) current MAC Standings Bowling Green 3-1 West Virginia 3-2 Northern Illinois 4-3 Akron 2-2 Western Michigan 2-3 SIU-E 1-4 Wednesday night match against West Virginia is a must win...... Northern Illinois had no games ...against BGSU or Akron...that were cancelled due to covid NIU will get to play all 10 games..... no clue how Akron and BGSU will get to play all 10 games they each will make up 1 of the 3 post poned games on Wed. April 14 Sounds like a very depressing game today....but the zips need to put one foot forward.....and get a win on Wednesday night
  4. has links for live stats and ESPN+ TV
  5. https://www.dispatch.com/story/sports/2021/04/02/evan-bush-happier-back-ohio-columbus-crew-even-backup/4828147001/ There’s also Bush’s familiarity with Porter and former Akron teammates Darlington Nagbe that should make the transition easier. "A lot of the dedication, commitment, the desire to push every day. The intensity that I try to bring to training is a byproduct of those three years working with Caleb,” Bush said.
  6. despite not playing , Akron is staying in the rankings dropped from 19 to 21 in coaches poll Akron tied Kentucky in Akron's first game. Kentucky dropped out of the rankings after losing to 1-9-1 Alabama Birmingham Marshall (Akron's best quality win) dropped from 8 to 13...as Marshall lost last week to West Virginia sure hope that the zips can play this Sunday against Northern Illinois https://unitedsoccercoaches.org/rankings/college-rankings/ncaa-di-men/

  9. in a somewhat related post, the teams selected for the NCAA tournament ...will be announced on Monday April 19 the zips are supposed to play at West Virginia on Wednesday March 31. (if they can not play on that date, it will be almost impossible to play a complete MAC schedule Akron is home on Sunday April 4 against N. Illinois and home on Wed. April 7 against W. VA Zips are scheduled to play on Sunday April 11...at B. Green...and Sunday April 18...at W. Michigan the MAC purposely kept Wed. April 14 open for makeup games... Both W. Mich and SIU-E (the 2 needed makeup games for Zips ) are both off between april 11 and april 18 alas, zips can only play one of them on apr. 14

  12. really tough news for our beloved Zip soccer team get well quickly, guys
  13. the SIU-E coach has many classy quotes in the article.... many more quotes....than the few I copied click on the article...it has final stats as well https://www.siuecougars.com/sports/m-soccer/2020-21/releases/20210317p6w59y "I respect Akron they fought hard and they are a good team," Wassermann said. " Wassermann said the tough, physical match proves how tough the MAC is as a league. "This is one of the toughest leagues in the country day in and day out," he said. "There are no easy games. We showed up today. I thought we did enough to win the game. Sometimes it doesn't go your way."
  14. Colin Biros is my man of the match.... I think that SIU-E led 12-9 in shots...and SIU-E led 8-5 in corner kicks but young Mr. Biros put 2 corner kicks inside the box...and Marco and Daniel took care of business I was really impressed also with Jason Shokalook. He played the full 90 minutes and he had 2 very nice passes to teammates inside the box. Always good to get a win in bad conditions. Federico Serra, Diogo Pacheco and Pol Hernandez did not play at all today. Credit to all of the zips...that played the full 90 today...Jason S, Dyson Clapier, Colin Biros, Marco Milanese, Johnny Fitzgerald and Carlo Ritaccio and Congratulations to Josh Hangi on his start, his first win...and his first shutout.... Mr. Hangi has a really strong leg on goal kicks 😀
  15. BGSU and Akron currently tied at 2-1 on top of the league standings BG with the win at WVU
  16. 2-0 Zips 25 minutes to go Shokalook good pass into the box...results in corner another good CK by Colin Strachan gets goal on rebound
  17. 1-0 at half time 3 starters for most of the year (Pacheco, Pol Hernandez and Hazem Sobhy) did not play in first half
  18. 1-0 zips ...13 minutes in beautiful CK by Colin Biros header by Marco M. !!!
  19. first start for Freshman GK Josh Hangi
  20. In the 2nd United Soccer Coaches Poll (March 9), the zips were #15 and the then 4-0-0 SIU-E Cougars were ranked 25 in the 3rd Soccer Coaches Poll (March 16), the zips dropped to 23...and SIU-E did not receive any votes https://unitedsoccercoaches.org/rankings/college-rankings/ncaa-di-men/ game time on their news release shows as 1 pm they are near St. Louis...so that is central time... game will start at 2 eastern game will be available on ESPN+ https://www.siuecougars.com/sports/m-soccer/2020-21/files/msoc21_G6_Akron.pdf
