Buffalo News Online SportsEven though they generously list him at 6'5", it looks as if Jabari could be in for another big day on Saturday.

Yahoo's line is now at 1 1/2 points (UB favored) today.

This is getting a little off subject (now there's a 1st at Zipsnation ), but I think that Craig Bohl, the HC at North Dakota State, has a better chance of getting the Husker job than Gill. Bohl was a linebacker coach at Nebraska in the past, and who has done a better job than he has (taking a Div 2 team to arguably the top spot in the FCS, even though they can't play for the title this year) in the last few years? Just ask Central and Minnesota how good the Bison have become under Bohl. I do believe that Gill will be given the opportunity to interview though.

I just saw what I think must be the 4th commercial for this campaign, and wouldn't you know it Zippy is the featured mascot!! I have to wonder if the amazing fans on Zipsnation, and you know who are, had a MAJOR say in forcing Capital One's hand (since he is doing so well in the voting). I especially loved the end where, after an amazing "ricochet rabbit" like fairway shot eventually rolls in Zippy does a little dance and turns 180 to flex, clearly displaying the FEAR THE ROO on the back of the sweater. Awesome!!! ESPN has played it twice this morning. "Brilliant course management", Zippy!! Go Zippy!!

Yahoo had us opening as a 2 point underdog, with the spread down to 1 today. This indicates more money on the Zips when we were a 2 point dog. I think this game is basically a toss-up, so I can't argue much with the spread. The UB fans seem to think the RB James Starks, in particular, plays much better at Alumni Stadium. I think we should devise a very aggressive defensive game plan, trying to limit Starks and the short passing game, and daring Drew Willy to beat us deep.

Frenchy talked more about this on WNIR this morning. Like I've said before, I agree with those of us that are concerned for John's long term health. If I recall, he was also the holder at the beginning of the season. I wonder if allowing him to perform this duty might be a compromise solution (assuming the stance taken while holding isn't too hard on his knee). This way, he could still provide an emotional boost for the team while hopefully preserving his body.Speaking of throwbacks and "old school" names, is there any one better than John's namesake, the former Baltimore Colt TE who has a college football award names after him. He was a player WAY ahead of his time!! He was Kellen Winslow, before there was Kellen Winslow.

I concur, your excellency! Go Zippy!!!!

Up by a little over 200 with 2 hours to go. Let's pour it on!!! A THREE GAME LEAD awaits!!!

Drew Willy is a pretty good QB, whose forte seems to be the short passing game. We better tackle well in the open field on those dumpoffs, because the Bulls seem to rarely go downfield with the ball. They have an EXCELLENT punter, and a very mediocre placekicker. I agree that the week off should be an overall positive for the Zips. Hopefully guys like Nate, Grant, and Jabari will be at full strength, because we'll need big games out of each of these guys. As far as winning out in the MAC East goes, I give it about a 25% chance. BG will be very tough at home, in spite of their erratic play of late. The interesting thing about Miami is that they are already playing many back-ups. I think they are on something like their 4th team RB. They could be one more injury away from imploding. Hopefully we'll take these games, like the old cliche, one at a time.
-
I think it's becoming clear that North Dakota St. is a very solid team. Perhaps the Chipps underestimated them. It's obvious, there are no "stellar" teams in th MAC this year, and this is all the more reason that I hope the Zips can just take the next few games "one at a time" and see where the "chips" fall at the end of the regular season.
-
The Bulls are giving a pretty good account of themselves to this point, tied 3-3 into the 2nd quarter on ESPNU. Their offense looks pretty solid, with Starks running hard, Willy making good decisions at QB, Roosevelt looking like a nice WR and special teams playing solidly. The D is where I think they are suspect. Ha....just as I write this, the 'Cuse completes a deep pass. Anyway, should be a good challenge for the Zips next week.BTW, did anyone see Mark May tout Turner Gill (payed QB and served as an assistant with Solich at Nebraska) as a potential candidate for the Husker HC job, once they can Callahan? I know Cap'n must be rolling his eyes at this one! I don't know, though You have to admit that Gill has been the only one able to breethe any life into U at B during their return to Div 1 FB.Bulls just intercepted Orange QB Robinson.

And to think that all but 1 of those Texas schools (UTEP) were in the old Southwest Conference at one time.I appreciate the sentiment of looking to a better conference in the future, but there will always be another side to this. For instance, I knew Marshall was struggling this year, but even I was surprised to see them WINLESS (0-6) at this point (just looked them up on espn.com). Snyder will probably be gone after this year and they'll be starting over. Who would have predicted this far of a fall when they left the MAC? (Well, except perhaps Bob Pruitt!)

uakronkid and GoZips88, you guys are despicable! muuuuuaaahhhhh-ha-ha-ha-haaaa I love it!! Zippy still up by a little over 100. Keep on voting!

Skip-Zip, I do believe that Toledo sometimes comes up as a potential target for Conference USA. I'm not sure how serious this ever gets, but I've seen it on more than one occasion. The "market size" and "growth potential" reasons the Big East added Cincy and USF are the same reasons why the MAC added Buffalo over some football programs that were obviously farther along at the time of this expansion. We may be getting pretty close to witnessing the wisdom of this move very soon. 'eguins will be shaking on his iceberg over that

what else are you going to do on a Saturday there?NIU has slowly built up a nice fan base, that more less follows the slow, steady progress in the program under Nowak. One losing season hasn't deterred them....yet.

uakronkid and his cohorts must be up to their awesome tricks!! Zippy is now up by 91 votes!!! Let's keep the momentum going

I hear it from a little birdie that John Mackey may be attempting to play again in 2007. I'm assuming that this could be because the NCAA has given indication that they will not be granting him a red-shirt year? While I admire the courage and have always enjoyed watching #19 play, I'm not sure if I think this is such a good idea. I don't have any details, but I would think that his decision would probably be affected by whether the Zips remain in contention or not. Has anyone else heard a similar rumor?

If the Zips have another losing season, should JD be fired?
johnnyzip84 replied to InTheZone's topic in Akron Zips Football
The timing with the opening of the new stadium complicates the issue. If, for instance, the Zips go 2-3 for the rest of this season to finsh 5-7, I think there might be some pressure to have a winning season in 2008. I say this because I don't know if the administration would be too fond of opening Infocision on the heals of three straight losing seasons under the same HC. I realize that if they were to fire him after this year, they could still be faced with opening the stadium on the heals of 3 straight losing seasons regardless, but they'd have the "new coach, give him time" angle to play. I'm not convinced that JD's contract length will be a huge factor in this decision. In the big picture, certain attendance figures for the new stadium are no doubt being counted on to pay off any construction loans. My guess is this is much more significant than the money that would be required to buy out the remainder of JD's contract. Don't get me wrong. I don't think that the play of the Zips on the field warrants this discussion, just yet. I'm just pointing out that monetary issues may play a bigger role. -
I don't necessarily agree with the folks who are always down on Brookhart (not saying I am wholeheartedly backing him, either), but I ABSOLUTELY feel that they have every right to express themselves, whether anyone else sees it as negative or not, on this board. I mean, isn't that one of the main reasons for even having such a forum????
-
That's extremely hilarious, even if it's in a sort of cryptic, off-beat way, Cap'n. Outstanding!!
-
I fully expect a lot of "anti-Zippy" voting this round against Monte, now that he (she) has a 2 game lead on everyone else
-
Granted, it's a long shot that the Zips could run the table. If they somehow manage this however, they would NOT need any help (to win the East), because they would own tie-breakers (head to head) over Miami, BG, and Buffalo, as well as any tie-breaker that might exist in a three-way tie with any of these schools. I'll admit, this is probably a moot point however.
-
You nailed it Z.I.P. No team has EVER been demoted from what used to be called 1-A to 1-AA, and I don't think it'll happen anytime soon, if ever.

Am I the only one who thinks that Martin may be playing opposum? I actually feel that Can't's somewhat quirky assembly of talent could give the red and silver some problems. I may be way off, but I'm going to say that Can't gives them a scare today, before losing by 2 TD's.Red and Silver Football Factory 38Flushes 24
