  1. The Capt. is right. This is a major building project. Why should the U release preliminary plans, when things might change. That only tends to make people complain. We only have another 4-6 weeks b/4 they make the big announcement. Let's have them tweek it all they want to just to make sure it is done right and not slapped together like the JAR.
  2. I know that some of our athltic administrators were in Kansas City last week meeting with the architects. They were tweeking the plans and making adjustments and trying trying to make it fit into the cost range of $55mil.There should be an announcement coming sometime in August. I was also told that the stadium will fit into the the current surroundings on campus. Meaning brick and probably something similar to the color of the field house.
  3. From what I have heard the last couple of weeks is that yes, they are grooming Frod to replace Christian. It seems Christian has been wanting to leave the last couple of years, but he would only leave if there was someone he thought was competent enough to replace him. I also heard that a coach from one of the Akron high schools would be brought on board as one of Ford's assistants.
  4. I agree with you Skip-Zip. Fans have never traveld well for Zip games. Whether it has been for fb or bb.Will I be at the Patriot Bowl/ Yes, only because my niece canceled her wedding. However, the are other events going on in Cleveland that day. The Air Show, The Tast of Cleveland and the White Sox are in town to play the Indians. In today's econmy, you have only so may $ for entertainment and only so hours to be able to enjoy yourself with the family. Not everyone are die-hard Zip fans like those of here at the Nation. If we get 20k, I will be extremely happy.
  5. Hey Bobby: everytime I read one of your posts, your take exception to everything and try to make it confontational. The University has come a long way in the time I have lived in Akron. It wan't until 1969 that they became a State univeristy. Have they grown? Absolutely! And is there room for growth? Absolutely? I just cannot see how we are going to get to 35k. To do that we would have to double the size of the latest building project. Where would we grow? At some point, the University will not be able to going any further downtown. The other side of Exchange is going to be the renovated University Park. The old Central-Hower HS will not be available for another 10-11 years. We must be creative and that is why they have a good pres. Proenza.Quit trying to start an argument. Let's just exchange ideas.
  6. From an idealistic point of view , I cannot agree with you more. However, let's be realistic. The suckeyes have an enrollment of 50,000+ while the Zips are in the 20,000+ range. The suckeyes are in a major TV market, whereas in Akron, we can only get local news via the cable network. The suckeyes are in the BIG 10 (lots of dollars and promotion), while the Zips are in the MAC (few dollars and not as much promotion) The suckeyes are in a city with a population of over 750,000, while Akron is going to be lucky at the next census of having a pop. of over 190,000.I am not knocking Akron or the Zips, since I have lived my entire life here and have supported Zip sports wholeheartedly. I am just trying to be realistic. however, it is nice to dream.
  7. You know. The ribbing against Can't State is funny. But I think that they should at least get credit for managing to upgrade to local FM radio. I wish we could do the same. We've always been on AM radio. I'm sure they managed to do so based on their recent basketball success and NCAA tournament success. I can't see them getting such a deal because of their football.Time for us to step up and upgrade as well. You must have been in the dark! Cant games (bb &fb) have been broadcast onWNIR for some time now. And by the way the broadcast sucks!!!!!!!!!!!! We would do better with another AM station. WAKR is out, only because they have contracts with the Indians,Browns and Cavs. All of those games would take precedence over Zip games. 1350 stinks. 640 is not too bad, but between the the university and the station they have to obtain the adviertising dollars. That is what pays for the broadcasts. We can't expect the radio station(s) to do the games for gratis or for a loss.
  8. Please read article.http://www.akronnewsnow.com/news/itemdetai...ction=localnewsIt's about time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
  9. I know I had mentioned something on one of the other boards, but I forgot something. This is a list of the mjor events happening in Cleveland on 9/1, in no specific order.1. Patriot Bowl-6:00 PM2. Air Show-Until 5:00 PM3. White Sox/Indians game 7:00 PM4. Taste of Clevleand @ Tower City-All Day and nightWith all of these activities going on, I really find it hard to believe that we will have more than 20,000 at the stadium, and I'm being generous with that number.
  10. I hate to burst anyone's bubble, BUT we will not be adding anymore men's sports programs. Title IX means that we must make very attempt to have the same number of women participants as we do men particpants. Women's golf just brings us closer to equality.
  11. I heard he had just got a job at Jillian's
  12. I'm not sure that if Keppler is or isn'tright for us. I want to hope so, since he is a local kid. As far as Yost and Ellet are concerned, Ellet WILL NOTbe any good until they start playing more minorities. There are plenty of them in the school, but Yost is just a good ole' boy from Ellet and doesn't think they should even be attending Ellet. Also, he has absolutely no dealings and will not even go to Hyreand try to convince the kids to play at Ellet.
  13. Trust me. There will be a very ceremonius ground breaking. Like the Akron City Schools, the gorund breaking usually takes place after the better portion of the area has been cleared.I know this is bass ackwards, but that is the way they do things and I'm sure this will be big news when it happens.
  14. I agree. Once we break ground , it won't take much time at all. I just check on Canal Park, which is much smaller than the stadium projected for the University. It took 14 months to complete. So, if all goes well, that date of June 2009, should hold.
  15. I know most of the property has been purchased. It is either under the name of the State of Ohio or the trustees of the Unoversity of Akron. From what Ihave heard, some of the business owners along Exchange St. are holding out. They are trying to get guarantees to prime locations near the stadium and/or the campus. I haven't heard about ground breaking, but if the dat eof 2009 is to hold true, one can only think the we will see earth being moved on the near future.
  16. Unfortunately, I have to disagree to some extent. Remember, the air show is going during the day & the Tribe plays the WSox that nite in a game that could & should have play-off implications. I don't see the game drawing anymore than 20k, with about 10k of those tickets being give aways from First Merit, the Corporate sponsor. The good news for me is that my wife and I will be making the trek to Clev. to see the game. My niece was suppose to get married that day, but she cancelled the wedding last nite. The gods must be watching over me.
  17. I said this at the end of last season & I will repeat it now, JD is an average coach. Look at his record. Why are we making him into a demigod? Agreed, that he was the coach when we won the MACC and took us to our first ever D1 bowl game, however what did that prove? Nothing! If he had followed that up, with a decent season last year, my outlook light be different. This is a pivotal year the Zips and JD. I wish them well, but I have this knot in my stomach telling me that it is going to be worse than last year. I certainly hope not!Go Zips
  18. I agree that Hartwick is not the best choice, but it is not that easy to find a team to join your conference. Even if it is conditionally for 1 sport. And the good teams that are looking don't want to match-up with a top ten team.
  19. Not really, the Zips are loaded at the RB position. Let's leave him as a corner, I think he will very good there.
  20. Unfortunatley, I agree with SkipZip. If you factor in all of the events already occuring in Cleveland and everything else happening in the area for the Labor Day weekend, it is not going to draw as many people as many of you are hoping to see at the game. Regrettably, my wife & I will not be at the game due to a wedding. Can you believe someone I know is actually getting married on the first weekend of college football? But is family, so we must attend. Also, an earlier posting made mention that they seemed to think ticket prices were a bit too high. Take a look at what all the other universities are charging and you'll see that we really are getting a break. It also looks like they plan on sit people only on the lower level. That makes sense, just for the tv exposure.
  21. The White Sux are in town for the weekend.
  22. Tallmadge!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!What a joke. You are so good, how come your not playing at Akrron?
  23. I just spoke with my secretary, who has been at the airshow the past 4 or 5 years. You get not only the people that really pay to see the show, but those that tailgate in one of the parking lots and watch the show from there. She said that parking is at a premium until about 3:00, then cars started dwindling out from the lots.
  24. I don't know how much parking there will be, but the air show runs basically from about 11:00 am to 5:00 or 6:00 pm. The Zips kick-off is scheduled for 6:00 pm and just as a kicker, the Indians will be playing the White Sox @ 7:00.If nothing else, parking will be at a premium.
  25. In a small article in today's PD, the Cleveland Sports Commission on Wednesday will officially announce that Army & Akron will be playing at Cleveland Stadium with a tentaive kick-off time of 6:00.
