  1. I know a lot of folks on this board won't acknowledge anything that the school in Portage County accomplishes in sports. But,they are really in the top 3 in baseball programs in Ohio. They are possibly the best program right now. How ironic that the pitching coach over there,Mike Birbeck, threw for Akron and that a former K... coach is at Akron. I am old enough to remember when the Zips went to the baseball regionals,I believe in 1988 and played T.Tech. I was living in Texas at the time. Baseball doesn't have a big following here because the program has been so bad. But, become competetive and there will be some folks showing up at Canal and Lee Jackson regularly.
  2. Hopefully Rembielak can raise the level of baseball here simply close to what is happening at that school in Portage County. For a team from the MAC or America East(go Stony Brook) to work through a regional and super regional to go to the College World Series is hard to comprehend. Anyway,a tip of the cap to those guys.
  3. Gee, guess if people don't fit your definition of whatever it is you are defining they are hard to tolerate? By the way I have been called an @$$ in better places by better folks than on here. Sorry it upsets you so.
  4. Saying he did nothing wrong is far too simplistic. No he didn't end up in jail. It seems like a lot of people assume or believe things 'just happen' to people. Maybe if you're sitting at a stop sign and somebody rearends you, that 'just happens'. Usually, there are a lot of concious decisions made by a number of people when people start getting shot or shot at...more than once.
  5. At the Bowl I saw them pull out one kid. I am sure there were some others. There didn't seem to be much of an issue at the Bowl when they startedpumping beer. Significantly,it didn't improve attendance either!
  6. If you ran a business and were hiring and had several prospects to chose from and the other prospects did not have the background this guy has, would you hire him? Everything you know about all the prospects is public knowledge and fair game. Just like with this guy. Lets say at least one or two other prospects made it through school with decent, not great grades and hadn't had issues that this guy had. Thats the same type of choice a university makes when spending time and resources on prospective student athletes. You spend valuable time and resources on prospects who appear to have the best opportunity to make it on the job or in school. By the way,as a parole officer I worked with guys from Y.town. No not 'everybody'over there has a few bullet holes in them or has been arrested, been kicked out of school etc, etc.
  7. Can't ignore his past behavior because as someone above said we don't know this guy personally. Prior behavior especially when it appears to be consistent in one direction or the other is the best way to TRY to determine whether or not behavior in the future will be similar or change. Obviously the reaosn WE know about this guy is because of his potential as a football player not as a student or an upstanding member of the community. Very high risk,POSSIBLE high reward. His behavior, whatever it turns out to be positive or negative will have an effect on many around him.
  8. Check out the ELEVENWARRIORS website. Some, lets say interesting, comments by this guy regarding the shootings. And, he was a problem at Ursuline, apparently then was 'asked to leave'Fork Union? Whats up with that?
  9. Thatas a damn shame. Some folks on this board busted his chops. But, after JD he never had a real shot at starting. The guy Ianello chose didn't elevate the play of people around him. Whether Nicely would have given a chance, with some decent coaching, nobody can say. But,he showed enough his first year to have a better opportunity than Lake Erie College. Get the degree and make a real career.
  10. 22 out of 120? Still not a high %. Fans who 'drink to get shit faced" are going to do it in the parking lot or in the seats. Doesn't really matter. Just admit its a financial move nothing more. And,while universities continue to preach against alcohol abuse by students which indeed is a problem, make sure to figure out how to reconcile the mixed message. Even if you can 'control'beer sales inside, the people who simply drink to get drunk will enter the stadium drunk and drink more inside. Gonna be interesting to see how the cops handle the first incidents that occur due to embibing a bit too much. By the way I always have a few before I go to the games.
  11. Umm,Phil certainly does come up with some headscratchers. Notice he has several UMASS guys sprinkled through his All-MAC. Don't know that anybody in the MAC is going to be that close to the Top 25 at the end. Certainly makes one wonder about the level of talent here.
  12. As has been mentioned previously, until the teams/conferences that play at the level of the MAC,SunbeltBig East etc, etc. separate themselves from the upper echelon, the current legitimate BCS conferences and 'do their own thing' this is just a meaningless game of musical chairs. It was much more meaningful when teams like Akron et al could legitimately competete for a National Championship at whatever level it happened to be designated.
  13. What happened last year and the year before with the QB's is done. I'm sure Bowden has seen more than enough of Moore on film and during the spring to have a pretty good idea if he wants to start a 'new era' with him as the starter. Its kinda the same dilemma the Browns have had the last couple of years. They went out and got another QB.
  14. Interesting discussion even if its not exactly about sports. But in some way it is. When you say that not every 'student'is 'university material',I agree. One group of these 'students' who tend to be visible are athletes. Just like the student body in general, there are athletes who get the opportunity to attend college but are not 'university material'. SOME of them, certainly not all have the privilege of attending college mainly due to their athletic ability, not necessarily their ability to eventually obtain a degree. What then is their objective? Do they deserve the opportunity even though they will likey not obtain a degree? I am not sure. I can say that had I not obtained a 4 year degree I would not have been able to obtain the 'job' that I eventually got. I guess I was 'university material' coming out of high school. But without the degree I would not have had the options that I had.
  15. Go to the Akron PD website. You can plug in specific street names(you can do multiple streets) and you can find all the incidents that drew a response for whatever time period you want. South of campus is a very busy area.
  16. While a school like Akron is still RELATIVELY a good bargain, there is still a woeful lack of support for higher education in general. Not everyone can get a scholly or grant. And,many peoplecan not afford to go into debt to attend school. Priorities about where we spend money need to change. Sorry, this is not exactly football.
  17. The local NPR station which is about 12 miles away did a good story on this tragedy a week or two ago. Give it a listen.
  18. Biggest part of the story in the ABJ wasn't about cheap beer at the INFO. It was about how tuition is going up the max of 3.5%. And, most if not all other fees are being raised about the same neighborhood. Better sell 'cheap' beer or the students won't be able to buy it.
  19. Somebody will use a 4th/5th pick on him.
  20. Pohl didn't have the best day. Williams threw the ball 50+ times. Get used to it. There will be picks running this offense. Won't matter who is the QB. Main thing is a QB who can make quick decisions, throw over the middle on crossing patterns and throw the ball away when nothing is there. Can't have passes knocked down, can't take sacks. Moore had a couple of nice runs. That doesn't make this offense go. Rythmn passes and runs make this work. Not sacks, batted passes....
  21. WCan't State did a story about Tyler Campbell and the tragedy that befell his family. There were interviews with his parents. It was a well done peice which provided 'food for thought' about a reality of college sports.
  22. Was at the game. Didn't see that Williams played all that badly. Threw a couple of picks. But,I think he might have thrown the ball 50 times. Its gonna happen in this offense. Moore had couple of nice runs and had at least two passes knocked down at the line. Threw the ball decently at times. Too early to tell about Pohl. In this offense the QB has to make a good decision quickly. Its a rythym passing game. Hopefully one of these guys will get some separation from the others over the sumer.
  23. Hard to tell. The caveat on everything in this game is that you had questionable talent playing against questionable talent. And,the coaches obviously reigned in whatever pass rush there could have been to avoid injury. -This offense will certainly be more fun to watch. Lots of wide receiver screens, slip screens, crossing routes. Looks more like the offense from 7-8 years ago. -4 and 5 receiver sets. -This may actually help the o-line because they won't have to hold blocks as long. -Dee Fireson kind of stuck out as a receiver. -I thought Williams may have thrown the ball a little better than the other two. Moore had a couple of nice runs. But he had at least two passes knocked down at the line. And he was holding the ball too long again. Pohl looked tentative. -They were trying to throw the ball to Will Fleming quite a bit out in space. -Hard to tell anything about the D. -The line still looks weak but there were some key guys out. -The secondary still looked pourous. But,the ball was being thrown all over the place. -John Senter's name was called quite a bit. The team was obviously jacked because the refs ended up calling a number of unnecessary roughness penalties. There were a couple of small skirmishes too. Waiting for August.
  24. Sorry to double up on this. But,heard something today about this guy's draft status. Some of you all with 'inside' info. whats going on with him?
  25. I was in Phoenix for 2 weeks. Lived there at one time. Its interesting that as much as folks in this area at times like to think this is the center of the sports universe, you don't see much if any mention of the Browns,Indians,OSU,Akron etc out there. I know there are some transplants out there. Its interesting to get something other than the home town perspective every once in a while.
