  1. Yup! Now get the COACHES to finally buy into the idea that you can actually run the ball FIRST. And, I am not just referring to Irons running for 100 yds. Use the talent you have at RB. Take some heat of of Irons. Let the O-line do what it semms most comfortable doing..run blocking. I still want to see which team, including coaches shows up this week. Must win!
  2. A lot of rehashing of a lot of rehashing. The coaches and players must treat the UB game as a 'must' win. Whether they are favored or not, they can't lose this one. Being favored doesn't get a win. This could be a trap game for Akron if they have a big let down early. Coaches can't let that happen. If they put up the offense numbers they put up against Indy, and they cut the TO's and stupidity. Lets see if last week was a mirage or if this team has finally arrived.
  3. Agree that Moorehead must get out of his pass first philosophy for good. The O-line blocks better on the ground. The point about too much 'yapping' has never been addressed by a succession of coaches. Sit somebody's ass down if he does it. Still can't decide who the 'real' DJ Irons is. No time for a letdown. Don't get cute on offense. You have 2 winnable home games coming up. Until they win a meaningful game they won't learn how to win.
  4. Damn shame to lose to a bad team the way it turned out. Where did all that offense come from? Will the REAL offense please sign in and stay for a while. Woulda, shoulda coulda with Irons. Defense obviously the strength. As we have said before Buffalo IS the biggest game this season. Now the trick for the coaches is to allow NO LETDOWN. Build off of yesterday. If you can move the ball against Indiana, you can move it against UB. Don't get cute.
  5. Up fron, did not watch more than a few inutes of the game. Looked at all the stats, however. Couple of things jumped. Nunnally is a beast at this level! The defense for now is fine. But, it can't score points...Oh, wait the defense scored a TD last week and won the game?! Puzzling offensive stats. Irons threw the ball 39 times and completed 24 for only 130 yards? Undercuffler was 6-7 for 60 yards. Thats a lot of passing for that little amount of yardage. Akron ran the ball 23 times for 69 yards(I am excluding the Undercffler sack). Irons had 13 of those 23 carries. What were the RB's doing? Still troubles me that the coaches haven't settled on a QB. And, what they are doing ain't workin'! As stated before, I am waiting for the Buffalo game on Sept. 30 do get a handle on this team. If this coaching staff is still trying to figure it out then...ouch!
  6. At least Brookhart/Moorehead could come up with a coherent game plan on offense. And, they settled on a QB and fit the game plan to what he was able to do.
  7. Undercuffler. At this point he plays. In spite of the INT's which were awful. But, the offense moved when he was in the game. Remember, they were going in for a TD when he threw that last one. When he sees the film he will see he had an open receiver underneath. Give him first team reps. Get him up to game speed. IF the coaches think Irons is going to be a distraction, they need to address the QB issue NOW. Name the starter now and stay with him and explain it to the team. Thats the coaches responsibilty. Thats part of being a HEAD coach!
  8. Would like to see more commit to the run also. Think others do also, Make the D respect it to help slow penetration. Still would like to see some 2 back. Run a screen and/or a draw once in a while. Morgan State burned Akron with a perfectly executed middle screen. Haven't seen that very often. Let Undercuffler play from here on out. He won't make plays with his feet, but I think will take care of the ball better if he is allowed to play and the coaching staff calls a game that looks like something more than randomness at times. In the meantime, if the D-line can continue to generate pressure which we haven't seen forever the backend will get its share of turnovers.
  9. One of my other suggestions is that Moorehead go back and look at some tape from the 2005/2006 teams.
  10. No, Moorehead is not getting fired. But, he has some serious problems on th offensive side, including in my humble opinion, play calling. A guy who sits with us in 212 said Moorehead needs to realize is not at Oregon anymore. Can't 'out athlete' other teams at this levvel. The coaches had to play Undercuffler. Irons was having his same issues. BUT, the play calling didn't do him any favors. The offense got some rythmn and moved when Undercuffler went in. Passes were on time, accurate, they scored. But, tthe coaches didn not use the run effectively even though it showed positive signs at times. The TE was used but sparingly. I am getting tired of watching the run game being inside handoffs paralell to the line of scrimmage. Use 2 backs occasionally. Give the O-line some help. And, throw to the backs underneath beyond the line of scrimmage to occupy safeties and LB's. The INT's Undercuffler threw were bad. The last one didn't need to go into the endzone. He had a receiver underneath. Undercuffler can manage a game IF the coaches help him with better play calling. Run the ball more effectively and take the pressure off the QB. The defense isn't going to win anymore ball games like yeaterday. I am looking at Buffalo as a barometer.
  11. At the game and this is some of what I observed. First, the defense considering the level of competition so far has been MUCH improved over last season. I'll leave that there. As for the offense not much progress. The coaches wasted almost an entire first half with Irons at QB. And, they didn't give him much help with the play calling. But, thats another issue. Undercuffler comes in, the tempo changes and the offense moves. He was throwing the ball on time and accurately.(get to the INTS in a minute). The coaches still didn't want to run the ball. Why? They were using the tight end some, hurray. The O-line is slowly improving, but again, play calling not helping them much. The 3 INTS from Undercuffler were really bad! Threw into coverage and didn't have to. When they were going in for the TD in the 4th Q, he had open receiver just short of the goal line. But, again, they were moving the ball. The coaches have to commit more to using some good RB's and have to let Undercuffler play.
  12. The coaching staff must have been and still must be questioningi its QB situation. Didn't Moorehead rotate in another QB at certian points in the game yesterday? Coaches USUALLY, not always, but usually don't like to start a rotation at QB unless they are not confident about the starter in certain situations. Again, Moorehead relies on a QB who can make good decisions and is accurate with his throws. Doesn't need a huge arm(remember Luke Getsy in 2005?) With that saie, the loss is not all the fault of Irons. Too many dumb ass penalties, maybe not enough run. If the defense can play like that from here on out, we will take it. Now looking at the schedule, I think the Buffalo game at home, will define the season.
  13. Not an acceptable loss under the circumstances. Up by a significant margin at half against Temple. Then your offense tanks? Defense did its job. Again, not an Irons fan after all these seasons. In Moorehead's offense the QB HAS to make plays. Has to be accurate and know when to get rid of the ball. We have seen this from Irons for too long. He is not a first or second year guy. Not accurate, holds the ball too long. After Saturday the schedule gets a lot tougher. Time for the coaches in the second season to make some tough decisions.
  14. Was watching. SDSU was nothing special. But, when the OU backup threw 3 picks, SDSU didn't have to do much. Thats a real solid OU team with a healthy Rouke.
  15. As everybody knows I don't normally comment in the pre-season. Need to see guys play against quality competition. I see a number of folks being VERY optinistic about this season. I think we will know in September whether Joe has really started to turned this thing around. I will be real curious to see how they stack up against Temple. Don't play close against Morgan State. I am not a big Irons fan so I want to see how much the coaches have been able to get out of him. If the D can cover up for the line, the Offense may be able to score enough to get to...6-6?
  16. No doubt the raw numbers look better. But, teams didn't have to throw the ball last season, they just ran over the defense. As I said earlier, the entire team played better the last 2 games. This season the secondary was quite porous for most of the season to say the least. A number of big plays through the air. The pass rush improved somewhat. And, with the much improved offense scoring more points teams sometimes needed to throw more and could. Just sayin', if you can find a better option be it with players or coaches go for it. Its not rocket science to realize this team needs help on defense at a number of positions. Coach Moorehead was able to bring in some quality transfers on offense this year. Hope he can do the same next year.
  17. Owens and Ashland lost to a very good IUP team in the DII playoffs. He brought in some really talented players when he was here, NFL caliber. Charley Frye, Chase Blackburn, Dom Hixon, Dwight Smith all made it. Had some good O-lineman also. He and Paul Winters had solid offenses. Blackburn and Hixon won Super Bowl rings I believe. Dwight Smith intercepted at least 2 for pick sixes in the Super Bowl if I am not mistaken. Best athlete I ever saw at Akron. Owens was 7-5(6-2 in the MAC) the season he got fired if I am not mistaken. Imagine going 6-2 and not winning the division. He got caught in a change of bosses in the Athletic Department. Certaily left a soilid foundation for Brookhart, Moorehead et. al.
  18. Taking a hard look at the D coaching staff in the off season.
  19. Tough game to lose. Tough way to lose. One too many sacks, turnovers and missed FG's. They definitely played better last 2 games. Clean up the O-line play. Try to keep the 2 really good WR's. Use the run game more. They have good RB's. The D still has some distance to cover. Have to get far more consistency from the DB's. Have to get a CONSISTANT pass rush. Not just now and then. Th LB's have to be able to stop the run closer to the line not 5 yards down field. Will be interested to see who coach goes with at QB. Buy those season tix!
  20. Undercuffler has only gotten siginificant playing time the last 2 contests. Yep, he needs to cleanup the picks. BUT, if Coach can really clean up the O-line play and thats a must do, either Undercuffler or Irons could be better. Still don't think Coach brought in Undercuffler to sit 2-3 years. The team has looked much better last 2 games. May depend on if Irons can recover by spring ball. We will see.
  21. I read Irons was banged up. But, has coach Moorehead turned the page? Seems with all that time off Irons could have 'healed' up some unless something more happened in practice. Can't imagine Moorehead brought Undercuffler in to sit for 2 years. Anybody?
  22. And guess who the OC was. Is this a harbinger of good things to come?
  23. Thank you! I realize that the offense Coach Moorehead prefers to run may not emphasize the run. But, as we saw tonight they can at least run effectively when they do commit to it more. Not only does that take some pressure off of Irons, it helps keep a really weak defense off the field. The O-line can get better at run blocking when they rep the run game. Not rocket science. But, again neither side of the ball, offense but especially defense has enough playmakers to overcome all the picks and fumbles. What is frustrating is that we are still seeing play in November that we saw in August, September and October.
  24. Hopefully a dreadfully small crowd will not surprise anyone. Has been happening for years, unfortunately. This is a tough time for teams that have nothing to play for but 'pride' as they say. Biggest challenge for Coach Moorehead is to try to keep his best players from departing in the off season. Gonna be tough with some of the guys who have shown well and want to move to a better program. Hang on for next seson. Reup those season tix.
  25. Even though they lost to Toledo who is real good, EMU looks pretty stout. They have a game wrecker on D. I saw them line up in a version of the pistol, with 3 RB's in the backfield with the QB. They can bulldoze you with the run if they want to. Or they can use the backs out of the backfield to create mismatches. Wish Akron would use some more multi-back sets. But that's not Moorehead.
