The 2012-2013 Akron Zips: The Breakthrough Year That Wasn't
zipfan84 replied to UAZip0510's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Good post and I agree completely. What I remember most was Nick Harney handling the point during the MAC tourney. A 6'-8" point guard! He had such raw talent. Of course, his off-court issues ultimately overshadowed that. As they did with Diggs, Abreu, & Tree. KD learned his lesson and has since stayed away from such high risk/high reward players. I agree with that strategy. I bet his players graduation rate has been at, or near, the top of the MAC too. -
Akron Zips v Kent State Golden Flashes: The MAC Championship

One team was hungry. The other lethargic. I hate to say It but KD was outcoached. Not with Xs & Os, but motivation. -

Agreed. Really need to avoid giving up a late lead. That's my big concern. -
Akron Zips v Ball State Cardinals: MAC Semi Finals

Good job men! -
Really? I watched the replay last night and thought the opposite. The 1st foul on Kwan was horrendous. Got pushed out of the way on a missed FT attempt and yet HE was whistled for the foul. There were several other calls just as dubious, IMHO.

Akron Zips v Ball State Cardinals: MAC Semi Finals

Let's take care of the ball and our emotions. Playing smart, unselfish basketball will result in a nice win and a date with one of our 'favorites' on Saturday. -

Yup. Would have been nice to extend to 12 points or so. Gotta come out strong In the 2nd half and reestablish control! -

Such disarray. And on the eve of the KSU game and mac tourney. Harkens back to the untimely arrest of our PG a few years back.. -

In past seasons KD Instilled a real emphasis on playing defense first. Guys would get pulled for a lack of effort. With that came a certain physical and mental toughness. This years squad exhibits none of that. As Kreed5120 said, minimal effort. As a result leads were blown in multiple games and last night it caught up with us. -
I stand corrected. It IS 2 words.

U of Akron Zips v. SUNY at Buffalo Bulls 2/24/17
zipfan84 replied to NWAkron's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
While very inconsistent as Skip-Zip has illustrated, this is the only team that I am really concerned about. With their athleticism, they are capable of beating anyone in the MAC. Thank goodness, they rarely seem motivated to do so. -
Just watched a replay of the buffalo game. One word: PRIMADONNA.

What he said! -
Agreed. The ball movement was excellent that night (I was at the game). Resulted in open looks from 3-land and shooting in rhythm more often than not. The offense, such as it is, now looks so slow and forced. A my turn, your turn (to shoot the 3) kind of appearance.
-
EMU played zone all night. Dog played the high post and was very effective distributing or driving to the hoop. Man to man presents much greater challenges for us IMHO.
-
kreed5120, I agree with a lot of what you are saying. I will add a couple of more observations. We had a couple of periods where we made concerted efforts to work the ball inside to Dog, penetrate & attack the rim, or get a decent 2 point shot off. During those brief periods we were able to quickly and efficiently erase BG's 5-7 point leads. Higher shooting % and/or fouls on the opponent. However, once caught up we fell into the all too familiar habit of jacking 3s when there was no reason to. Not only did this kill our scoring but BG was often scoring at will in transition. Too easy for them........on both ends of the floor! Throw in some lazy passing (turn-overs) and very poor defensive rebounding and you end up with a 1 point loss to one of the league's doormats. I saw the same trends in the OU game at Athens. I found both of these games much more frustrating than the loss to KSU. At least Kent played hard and earned it. The other 2 losses, not so much. I cringe when Kwan takes his 1st shot as a 3 pointer and it goes in. Usually means many more to come..........

Facts are overrated.

Suggestion to Zips Marketing Team: When the good guys go on a huge run, have the opponent on the ropes and they call a time out, do NOT silence the crowd with silly contests during said time out. Maybe limit the contests to the scheduled media time outs?
-
Kwan's offensive put back and 3 point play turned the tide In my opinion.
-
I'm afraid I'm with NWAkron on this one. Buffalo Is loaded with athletes and If they put It together In the mac tourney, watch out.

8 minutes of inspired ball at both ends. Good enough to beat Toledo apparently. Better bring more than that on Friday.
