What does a football playoff mean to the MAC?
skip-zip replied to psc2009's topic in Akron Zips Football
But wouldn't you agree that having a selection committee, as opposed to a predetermined point system, will increase the likelihood of subjectivity with who is chosen? And with a history of making choices based on a team's name and projected tickets sales, that can't be a good thing for a TCU or Boise, or any other team from a non-upper-echelon conference. -

Especially with an organization that has a history of selecting the name team that will fill the most seats, when it comes down to an open choice. -

It is tough for me to think of a scenario that involves anyting other than... 2 SEC Teams 1 Big 12 Every other "Power" conference fighting over the last remaining spot. Let them prove me wrong. Those times that Boise and TCU got into a major bowl game under the BCS system will not be allowed to happen this time around with a "Selection Committee" doing the choosing. What a shame. -
Two first round picks, two second round picks, and a 15 million exemption on their salary cap. They could have been left with nothing. He was a free agent. With the way so many people in Cleveland decided to act like idiots, and think he "screwed" them, and the behavior of their owner, they deserved to be left with nothing.
-
It was a technicality. Technically, LeBron was "traded" too. He did a sign-and-trade after he elected to go to Miami in order to allow the Cavs to recover more money on thier salary cap for their future. I just want to point that out, since some people still want to run around saying that he was trying to screw Cleveland. That wasn't the case. He could have walked away without the Cavs gaining anything. And if he had known that Gilbert was going to go on a whining, irrational tirade after he left, I wish he would have considered just walking away without giving them anything. It shouldn't be any mystery to anyone why Cleveland remains a loser city.
-
What have you been smoking? He extended his contract with the Cavs after the 2007 season, and he made it a Multi-Year extension.

I feel your pain. I've heard that more than once today.

Well deserved title for the King. Spending 7 years in Cleveland, he's paid his dues in more ways than one. As an Akronite, I appreciate everything he does, and the way he has conducted himself in the face of criticism and pressure. Cavs fans should be saying one thing to LeBron......THANK YOU for spending 7 years of your career playing for our crap town.

Good. I can start watching Cleveland Network news again at night without my dinner.

Dambrot says 'yes' to Duquesne this time

At the very least, let this serve as a reality check for some of the naive people on this board who always like to use the words "He's not going anywhere" when describing the situation of anyone in the coaching profession. -
Personally, I wanted to see two things here before practice starts in August. 1) I wanted to see Coach establish who was going to be a part of the competition. And I think he accomplished that for me by making a early decision on a Senior QB. So, he obviously was paying attention to past performance and the early part fo spring practice. And he saw what we've seen for 3 years, which doesn't surprise me at all. Which leads me to the 2nd thing I wanted to see. 2) I still don't think it's in our best interest to make a Senior the starter. In many respects, I want to see him lean toward a "the younger the better" philosophy, since this is a long term project. But, other than giving that heavy consideration, I still want our best guy on the field. And if a freshman is indeed our best QB, I don't want him to hesitate at making a freshman the starter. I trust his judgement so far on the QBs. And we'll see how it plays out.

I'm sure the national numbers may not be impressive. But, NE Ohio is all over this, and that's more damaging than anything. See my stories in previous posts. At the very least, they've gotten tons of nightly, high profile attention in NE Ohio, from a non Football or Basketball sport. This kind of story resonates among prospective students and athletes who are making their college choices.

Alexander Gives First-ever Mention to ZN.o

You should be commended. And I echo your sentiments. -
Even the news station's correction of the error is hilariously incorrect. They say, "The Zips are Akron's Mascot, not Ken+'s Mascot"
-
Did you read my story about an AKRON bar changing all of their TVs to the Ken+ vs. Oregon game in the regionals? I hate to say this, but everyone was watching the Ken+ vs. Florida game at the restaurant I was in last night. In Akron. And it was a different place. I'm hating to see this. But, you'd have to live up here to see how sickening it is that Ken+ is getting so much attention from people in this area right now.
-
I know. I hate it too. Like I've said many times, this is one of those instances where I wish soccer was more popular. And thanks for the additional thoughts about that call that got Ken+ the victory. As I said, regardless of whether it was right or wrong, I still believe that's a very, very tough spot in which to jump in and make such a judgement that wiped away a run, and did indeed directly lead to a team's loss.
-
Thank you. The Cleveland media sending TV crews to Omaha just because Ken+ MADE the baseball tournament, and simply sending TV crews to an Akron bar for a soccer national championship game would be an example of a clear difference between how the media views the stark difference in viewer interest in the two sports.

Without reading the rule definition, it still doesn't change the much bigger circumstance, which is the critical juncture at which a run scoring was overruled. You mention the word "Umpire" several times in your post. And the "Umpire" called it a ball. It's very interesting considering the number of times that we talk on this forum about officials changing a game. It's a prime example.
-
Do you even know the rule on this? The bat needs to cross the plate. It has nothing to do with whether he "swung" or not, as you say. EDIT: I should have added that this was compounded by how bad the call was on the pitch right before, which was way out of the strike zone, and was called a strike. Nonetheless, since we have so many discussions about the officials deciding a game, this would be a prime example. Overruling the home plate umpire on that call, in the bottom of the ninth inning, is clearly a call where an official decided the outcome of the game. In basketball, I'd compare this to a referee away from the play changing the baseline referee's call from a block to a charge with 3 seconds left in a two point game as the shot falls in the basket.

Having a famous alum changes nothing. Cleveland stations were making plans to send sportscasters to Omaha while they were still in the Sweet 16. We can't even get sportscasters from Cleveland to follow our soccer team when we are in a national championship game. It speaks volumes about the difference between the two sports in this country. By the way, I think Florida got robbed tonight, if anyone was watching the game. For a 3rd base umpire to overrule the home plate umpire, and wipe out a 9th inning walk that ties the game, and leaves the bases loaded with only one out, is ridiculous. That call changed everything. Ken+'s pitchers couldn't hit the ocean with a beach ball in those late innings.
-
That's what I keep saying. And it sucks for us, but it is indeed a harsh reality check. This story already far surpassed our soccer national championship in media attention a long time ago. Just the Josh Cribbs sponsored Omaha bus trip alone is getting tons of media attention. I can only imagine what would happen if they could win title. It would be an absolute disaster for us in terms of our competition for attention with Ken+ among NE Ohioans, if it hasn't already reached that point already.
-
It's true, and it's actually making me sick. Today's Beacon has Ken+ baseball pictures on the front of the Sports section AND on the Front Page of the Paper !!! And again, I will say this....they haven't even started the damn tournament yet !!! I was in a bar in Akron when they were playing Oregon a few days ago. The Ken+ game was on one TV when I got there. But by the middle part of the game, so many people were asking what was happening that they turned ALL 5 TVs over to the friggin Ken+ game.
-
Where in the world did you ever find the data to make this a definitive statement? It's not true, and I'm sure every one of us on this board has a personal example of it. But, let me start at the top. Michael Jordon left basketball to play baseball. If your formula is true, it's because he was a better baseball player? And on a personal level, my nephew was a phenomenal youth soccer player who once scored all of his team's goals in a 5-0 win, but he stopped playing, and has played basketball ever since, and sits at the end of the bench, and is now a Senior. Listen....we get it....you will do whatever it takes to one day try to convince us all that soccer is going to rule the USA.

There's no doubt. GP1, if you lived up here you'd see that Ken+ has already gotten far more TV coverage than we got for winning a national soccer title. And that coverage is coming BEFORE the CWS has even started. I think Channel 5 has even already sent a Sportscaster out ot Omaha. It sucks for us, but it's reality. It's baseball, not soccer.
