  1. It will be open by the opener against syracuse, but I feel like the merchandise will be disappointing... Did you read this somewhere? The UofA said it would be open last year too. Do agree the choices will be underwhelming.
  2. "Same when the team shop opens up." so let's start a little wager...when do you all think will actually happen? i say team shop will be complete by last game of 2010.
  3. Thanks G-man! I can image students trudging to classes in flip-flops, board shorts, parkas, gloves and hats...haha. I know scottditzen and I agree that any landscaping/design of an area should try to use native plant species and design features that promote discussion and entice people to congregrate there. Large Soviet-era type structures ala old Akron's campus should be razed and more designs like the one from UCF's "Knights Plaza" should be created. Vertical retail/residential use is good (new dorms). More beautiful, less concrete!
  4. I want to see something behind the baseball field's fence. telling ya, palm trees!
  5. What if he never figures it out? Almost to my thirties, I am just now fully realizing how much I enjoy chicken wings and beer. I want to fully realize my potential before it is too late. Nice. In my mid 30's and realize wings and beer are IT....nothing more to see here...that's it...oh yeah, boobs are nice too...enjoy. My wish is sometime soon the Zips play YSU and end this pointless discussion. Zips would win 9 out of 10 games played against YSU. I would be highly upset with 9 out of 10. There is no excuse for us not to win 10 out of 10. That was just a hypothetical scenario guys.....dont be specific..... ok ok Zips would beat YSU ANYTIME they played each other...BETTER? GOOD.
  6. Maybe if the Univ puts up palm tress it will look better?
  7. Oh to be young again..... Saw so many good shows in Akron when bands used to play there. Saw Nirvana at the JAR and Pantera. Saw Flaming Lips, Arlo Guthrie and many local acts at EJ Thomas. I attended too many shows at the Daily Double and Annabelles to count. There were even some shows later at Jillians. My brother played at Cavanaugh's b4 it was Northside, friends bands played anywhere/everywhere and I cannot forget the BEST venue for music...Akron Civic Theatre=best environment, best venue, coolest place around. "THE MUSIC SCENE" is pretty weak everywhere in NEO. Cleveland gets passed over so often for significant tours in favor of Columbus or Cinnci that many acts dont even schedule Ohio dates anymore. So anything you folks still in school or venue owners can do to attract and grow our fan-going musical choices in Akron it would be aprreciated. Shout out to the good folks at Musica!

  9. I predict the Zips will play at least 12 games this year.
  10. Still just AWFUL advertising for it. What does the marketing department do all day?! Any spring game is about the most pointless thing a fan could go to. It's like going to watch a practice and the marketing department should not advertise boring events. Anyone who has been to a college football practice would see how boring they actually are. If 318 people go to the spring game, then there are 318 people with nothing better to do on a Saturday. Wake me when the real games start. Maybe ANY spring game in the MAC is pointless, but not for BCS schools. There its a way to raise a little petty cash ($100+K) minimum. That covers a whole seasons worth of athletic tape. And its a way some fans who can't get into a real game can get some semblance of a game day experience. I cannot argue against the UofA making money on out of season practices/games for sports. Any extra cash would be helpful. Maybe to finally finish the team shop. Unless you like seeing more vacant store fronts on Exchange St. However, there is a world of difference in paying $10-20 to see OSU, Cinnci and Notre Dame players practice and The Zips practice. In big BCS schools' spring games, you (as a fan) are seeing the AAA farm team of the NFL for certain players. You can say "I saw/talked to/got autograpgh of Player X, before he was a star." Its like watching that Santana kid catch for the Aeros last year. In Zips' spring games, we go cuz we like college sports; specifically, Akron Zips football. We reconnect with friends, tailgate again when its nice out and bask in the enjoyment of being a fan(atic). Do you think a profit of significant amount could be made if there was a $5 admission charge? Unless the UofA would have attendence in the high thousands, dont think its worth the effort. Just my 2cents.
  11. Jeese, you guys just cannot let the schedule (good or bad) go! Hasnt that topic been This thread is about the new regime and new style of play for the team. So back to our regularily scheduled program: This team is going to look entirely different if I'm reading the ABJ stories right. And if so, then Im back on board full tilt. Zips will run a Pro-style Offense. We'll see RB AND FB at the same time along with TE'S AND WR'S. This concept seems so strange to our team. I cannot wait to see normal snaps without our QB staring at the sidelines for 10 sec after already coming to a set position. Also, there may be a QB battle once/if Rodgers is healthy. Defense will be a 4-3 style. As Coach I said they will "stuff the box" Hoping to see other teams have problems running against the Zips. Maybe we'll see RB's swallowed up by our Pouch Defense. 5-6 wins would be a good start in the right direction.
  12. A problem in sports today, as entertainment, is everyone is a diplomat. Nobody says what is really on their mind or admit to what everyone already knows that they are thinking. I like when people say exactly what they belive. It is not just more entertaining, it is more honest. Guys like Tiger Woods (pre-bimbo explosion) are boring because they say nothing when interviewed. In a lot of ways, LB James is boring because he speaks in Nikelike robot speak. They say the same thing every time they are interviewed. Charles Barkley was at least interesting because you never knew what he was going to say. Yogi Berra was interesting because you never knew what he was going to say next. Bobby Knight was interesting because he was completely honest and revealed his opinions. I wish we could go back to the days where an athlete was as interesting as he was athletic. +1 Great post. +2 If I am a Syracuse AD, player, coach whatever.....damn right im expecting to beat a lowly MAC school anyday. And saying so is not unprofessional at all. Its honest. Fans read that and get geeked up. Im so sick of having Romeo Crennels, Eric Wedges, Mark Shapiros, Jim Tressel-types always saying the PC thing. B-or-ing.
  13. You miss the point of the spring game (and I don't know that other schools charge, you'd have to show me that somewhere) the spring game is about accessibility of the team to the fans. You charge for this and non shows up. It's a "hey look at the future of your team" and a "we know you're hungry for football so here's a taste". Agreed! I am excited to see the new players, possible new schemes....heck...im excited just to see football again. Who cares if its only a scrimmage. Its still fun to be at the stadium, possible tailgaiting with friends and seeing other znation friends. Go Zips! Be positive guys, this year will be fun.
  14. I grew up in Akron reading the BJ and now the PD. My opinion is Terry Pluto is a good, enjoyable read as a writer, not a great one. I enjoy his opinions and thoughts in articles. Writers who just spout facts and stats bore me.As stated earlier in the thread, to those that say Pluto stinks, OK. Just tell me who you think is better! Back up your statements.I will then take your suggestions and do my research.
  15. By journalists maybe. Pluto is alright but nothing even close to great. BTW, if im not mistaken Terry Pluto graduated from Cleveland State so how does a Ohio University person like yourself even consider Terry Pluto as so great? I mean dont you have plenty of other better journalists from Scripps? Personally, I can think of tons better than Terry Pluto."Personally, I can think of tons better than Terry Pluto."Like? Names please.
  16. Ok, thats valid...however the teams i listed do have more consistent winning seasons and at times do make the tournamentOur current mostly weak OOC schdl consisted of 14 games. Of those, maybe 4 or 5 teams can be considered consistent winners. The Zips lost 4 of those games to teams who have winning seasons regularily. So playing 10 games against inferior opponents is nice to "pad" the won/loss record, but damn those games are BORING and generate ZERO interest with many fans. Howard....really?!AR Pine Bluff...lower conf foe, zero regional interest generated...BORINGMalone...should not schld ever again except in exhibitionSt. Francis (PA)...rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/teams/sbo "...totaling 16 league victories over the last four seasons." BAD team!Ill. Chicago & Valparaiso are 2nd tier Horizon League teams...again who cares about these teams? I know my points are way over analyzed. Just want to have a reason to make the drive down I-77 in Mid-Nov more often. The teams listed above are not good teams and therefore do not generate buzz/interest/attendence. Now a Youngstown State & CLE State game set would be great for fan support and interest.-end of rant-

  19. My bad- thats 3pm till 730- when French and Dunn take over the airwaves.Great NEWZ! I am pleased to see our local AM radio stations that focus on sports (1350am & 850am) are starting to feature programs other than OSU. Guess it helps that Akron has teams (Soccer, BBall) that are worth following and are successful.BTW, if anyone listens to Tony Rizzo's show on 850 AM WKNR, then you should listen tomorrow 3/4/10 for a non-Zips topic......SURFING. Our forum friend scottditzen will be on discussing his movie at 10:30 am.Stream here: www.espncleveland.com
  20. +1Would be much more inclined to goto Home games early in season if Zips played teams with a little more prestige and notoriety than St Francis and Malone college. Here are the NCAA BB 2010 Standings from cbs.sportsline: http://tinyurl.com/ybelakgZips should not schedule cupcakes anymore except exhibitionsZips should schedule teams such as: Robert Morris 15-3 20-11Vermont 12-4 22-9 Maine 11-5 19-10 Boston U. 11-5 17-12Providence 4-12 12-16 Marshall 10-5 22-8 Tulsa 10-5 21-9 Southern Miss 7-8 17-12 Houston 7-8 15-14 SMU 7-8 14-15 Cleveland St. 10-8 16-16 Iona 12-6 21-9 Niagara 9-9 17-14 I want to see teams that might have the ability to be in the tournament AND are beatable teams.Doing so would easier market these teams to casual fans or fans like myself who cannot normally make it to weeknight games in Nov and Dec.
  21. I like seeing The Sweaters back, will be nice to see how they play in 2010.
  22. He was definitely ALOUD when he did this: 03/10/2008 SINGLETARY, CHRISTOPHER NUISANCE PARTY (DISTURBING THE PEACE) Can't POLICE
  23. RPI=convienent method of letting numbers override critical thinking by the selection committee.
  24. I did not watch nor listen to game, however looking at the stats now. No matter who the Zips play, they will find it really hard to win shooting 38% or so and having 16 TO's in a game. They seemed to hang with a good team. Once again though (Austin Peay, Gonzaga, NC State), they came up just short. They should tear apart the MAC schedule!
