I never realized how much worse it is when measured in centimetres..... The temperatures are pretty bad as well.....and if you think those are bad, convert them into centigrade.

I can see the MACtion now. One team lines up to kick a last second FG to win the game from 22 yards straight away. MAC kicker misses the easy FG so wide right he misses the net that is home to the three yellow painted lines signifying where the goal post is entirely.....on a Tuesday night........at midnight.....in mid January......during a blizzard. Did anyone really think that if you got a group of MAC athletic directors in a room to make a big decision that it couldn't get worse than it already is?

If you can't do something right, don't do anything at all. In my opinion, have a minimum of 10 games or don't have any at all.

I think you are 90% correct. The only question is....how fast can the P5 schools ditch G5 schools, the NCAA and reorganize themselves? Some of these P5 schools are going to be out of a lot more money than G5 schools this year. That kind of money does not get made up in one year or two. It could take many of them up to 10 years to get their finances back to where they want them to be. The sooner they ditch G5 schools and replace them with more profitable games, television money, advertisements, etc, the sooner they can get their balance sheets back in order. The sooner the NCAA goes away, the faster they can eliminate the overhead necessary for compliance nonsense. If the P5 schools think they can do this by next year, you are 100% correct. In the end, G5 schools really need to get together and decide how they can best use their athletic departments to shine a positive light on their schools. I'm hoping they have the sense to bring in other people to think about that for them.

Stay clear of South Carolina breweries. I've never had one I liked. Charleston is one of the great food cities in the world and I think as good as the food is, the breweries are that bad. Myrtle Beach? That's where you go to drink 30 Coors Lights per day. It's about time for those of us who live here to start our off season visits.

I'm not much of a beer expert, but I know what I like when I taste it. If you are in the Carolinas for whatever reason, Foothills is popular with those who like craft beer. Www.foothillsbrewing.com/

Is it systemic? No, that's not what the word "systemic" means. If it was systemic, ALL universities would be experiencing it. It is a "problem" for the bottom half. There is a need for systemic change. What system though? The Athletic Department or the overall university or G5 universities or just G5 athletic departments? The systemic issues at G5 schools have created problems for G5 athletic departments. G5 schools are having trouble coping with the financial pinches in recent years and are making already financially strapped athletic departments the target of poor administrative decisions including crippling cuts to athletic departments and student fees. Systemically, G5 universities are in a cycle of disastrous public relations. When is the last time you went six months without a report of the financial problems at UofA or similar schools. There is no reason to get upset with the media about this as they are public schools for the most part and taxpayers deserve to know what is going on at their public institutions. Are these schools making a concerted effort to highlight what they are doing positively within their communities? I doubt it. I don't see it and I live close to two decently sized public universities. The public is left with a feeling these schools are failing at every level and since they are funded by the public the "outrage response" is to demand cuts. Five years of cutting did not make General Electric a great company. Today, it is a shell of the company it was five years ago when the Six Sigma Black Belts took an hatchet to everything in sight (actually, it was much more than five years ago). During that period, you almost never heard good news about the company and investors lost confidence. The same is happening with G5 schools. How about the clowns who run them and work at them (yes, I'm talking to the professors who endlessly call for cuts to athletics) highlight some of the great things the kids are doing throughout the school to offset the negative financial press? What if these positive stories gave confidence to potential students and the enrollment/revenue increased? Isn't that a solution as well? G5 schools are not going to cut their way to success or a new future. That is a downward cycle that will cause the entire system to fail. If you want systemic failure, this is what it will look like. It's time to turn these schools into the beacons of light they are and not the black holes they appear to be. College athletics can be part of that endeavor.

I think you are correct and make a couple of really good points. Asking a college player to play 24 games in basically 8 months is not realistic or fair to those players. The body cannot withstand that level of punishment. Schools need to make spring football permanent or don't have it at all. The point about eligibility is a good one. The first consideration is the scholarship numbers. Even if they allow for increased scholarships for one year, where will the money come from at already cash strapped universities? We also need to keep in mind that almost all of the players have no shot of playing after college. My guess is as players earn diplomas after five years, they leave and start their adult lives. A sixth year is a long time to stick around a college just to play football. I went to college for six years, but the last two years were spent in graduate school earning a Masters Degree. It was odd looking at my peers from high school who already had two years of work by the time I was finished. The players will notice this as well. Moreover, how many players will want to stick around a losing program? It's a ton of misery in between games just to play some games only to continue to lose.

Good questions. G5 will need a governing body.... A much smaller governing body. We arent going to separate from anything. We are about to get dumped by the good looking girl and need to figure out a future. I'm less concerned about cutting the expenses and more interested in increasing revenue for the overall university. This revenue needs to come in the form of increased enrollment. It can spread out student fees and reduce the cost of attendance for all students. A proposal I would have is a reduction in the endless drip of poorly released public information that scares students away from enrolling. Unfortunately, the new President seems to be embracing the failures of the past in this regard.

The P5 schools should begin to abandon the NCAA. The timing is right. It will be the end of the NCAA as it is now because they are almost entirely funded by March Madness. A stripped down version of the NCAA could be a good governing body for what is left. It could facilitate competition and inter conference agreements without all of the petty nonsense like regulating whether or not players can have jobs.

They should consider modeling something like what Wake Forest did with football tickets. I've paid for my tickets, parking pass and required Deacon Club donation. I don't care about the Deacon Club donation as it is a charitable donation and not much money compared tickets and parking pass. Exactly how it will work is unknown, but basically my tickets and parking pass money will be "refunded". I can ask for the money back right now and get a check. Or I can buy single game tickets and pay out of my "bank" at the week of the game. All tickets are electronic. Let's say I have 6 home games and spend $200 per game for two tickets for easy math. If they only play 3 games and the season is cancelled, I would get back $600. If I only go to one game and all were played, I would get $1,000 back. This is a good way to treat people during uncertain times. It creates a good fan experience even when they may not feel comfortable going to a game. People just have to be more engaged when games are coming up if they want to go. The only thing that would make me upset is if my seats were drastically different. I have 48 yard line seats 2/3rd up the Wake side. The advantage is they are always in the shade because of the giant pressbox. I understand they may be different, but I do think being a 12 year season ticket holder should mean something. Akron just needs to provide something people will understand during difficult times. Fans need to show some understanding as well and not act like babies if they don't get every last thing they want.

I'm not surprised by the cancellation of the season. The people who run the league get 24 hours to decompress. Hopefully they will feel reenergized and on Monday get down to the business of figuring out what they want the league to be. The upcoming week is going to be informative. What will the other G5 conferences do? Is the MAC the first dominoe to fall? Does the cancellation of the MAC season take pressure off of the other G5 schools and make it easier for them to cancel? What are the phone calls between G5 commissioners? Maybe in 10 years, we will all look back on the cancellation as our day of freedom from what has become complete insanity.

The Citadel isn't a real military school. Kids can leave whenever they want. Clemson, USC, and Winthrop are all better schools. Think of it as a school where unimpressive kids of former Citadel graduates go because it's part of their family tradition. It's been going on so long people in South Carolina have little respect for their graduates.

Oddly, I agree with almost all of it. He's wrong about the number is scholarships. 60 is not competitive with FCS numbers. $800,000 is not enough for a coaching staff or even close to market value. The big mistake is the MAC, by itself, needs to make changes. That would be an even worse decision than their ESPN weeknight package. All of the G5 schools need to get together and make the hard decisions.
-
Think of it like this. They were going to pay Akron $1.2 million. They settle for us at $750,000 and pay Citadel $450,000. They wouldn't have to spend any extra in reality.

Clemson can justify anything it wants as long as it meets legal obligations. The pile of money they are sitting on told them it is possible to explore options. It is entirely possible for Clemson to play Akron but I think the odds of that happening are about as good as Jack surviving the cold water at the end of Titanic. They don't want to play Akron and they will not be playing Akron. What is going on is little more than in state politics. There is an in state public institution in need of a game. Clemson is making room for that team to have a game. Pretty soon the Akron/Clemson game is going to float away in the cold north Atlantic ocean like Jack's stiff, frozen corpse. Clemson is waiting on the MAC's decision. If the MAC foregoes the season, they are out of their contract and financial obligations to Akron making them free to schedule Citadel. If the MAC plays, they have to pay Akron to get out of the contract and then put Citadel on the schedule for $450K. Either way, Akron is out and Citadel is in. It's more about the game than the money. There have also been rumors of Clemson trying to sneak in a game against Ohio State, but I think that is a pipe dream.
-
$1.2 million is not much for a school like Clemson. SC daily cases are down 50% from July 19th. Cases across the usa are down. I recommend following Alex Berenson.
-
MAC Decision Day We will know more today. Rumor in South Carolina is Akron is being replaced by Citadel on the Clemson schedule. Today's decision will just let them know how much it's going to be to get out of the Akron contract if that is the road they take. Citadel is willing to play them for $450,000 and the powers that be in SC would want some money thrown around SC right about now. No matter how things shake out today, I don't see Akron playing Clemson this season.

4 or more is my choice. NHL, NBA, PGA, WNBA, some professional soccer, KBL, throw in the pba if you want. If I had a second choice it would be zero. I don't think there will be an in between. All of the leagues above are professionals with much more mature people involved. They can segregate themselves much better than college kids. The professionals also have much more at risk if they don't play. The more I type this paragraph, the more I think the answer is zero, but I'll stick with 4.

Depends on if you are talking about a Department or classes. I have no problem offering these classes through the Sociology or something else. Not sure where these classes fall. A Department is something completely different. Departments require staff and overhead. Offer the classes without the Department overhead.

How much trouble do they have selling football in the SEC?

I am concerned about the deficit as well. In addition, I am concerned about the revenue stream into Athletic Departments across G5 schools. I despise the Universities are covering the mismanagement of their schools with student fees. In my opinion, the elephant in the room is not in the Athletic Department. I am like you kreed, I have no problem with a deficit in the Athletic Department as long as it is serving a greater purpose and being run reasonably within a public university. Do they need to make changes? Yes, but with schools like Akron, not on their own or it will have catastrophic consequences for the Athletic Department and University and schools like ours. The elephant in the room is the rapid decline in enrollment. This is not the fault of the Athletic Department. A lot of things can cause this decline. One may be the endless drip, drip, drip of bad publicity from the University. I don't know much about the current President, but he seems to be aloof about the PR problem and the relationship of it to the funding of the overall University. Someone needs to dump a bucket of cold water over his head to wake him up. The enrollment problem needs fixed before any crippling cuts are made to athletics. Further, someone needs to stand up publicly for the Athletic Department and feature many of the great things it does for the kids, what the kids do for the University and what those kids' efforts around the community do for NE Ohio. If the Athletic Director could take a break from bean counting for a while, maybe he could develop a PR campaign to assist in this effort.

What if this is all there was for G5 schools with adding in giving the surrounding community something fun to do?
-
Yes, I can. I also know one school that has gotten good at creating a crap storm of bad pr.
-
Do you think the students, alumni and surrounding communities think the same as you? Michigan and Notre Dame are top notch academic institutions. I don't think those close to the schools only see the sports. I also don't think they spend much time thinking about what others think of them. If the point of G5 programs is to be like P5 schools, close the doors because that is never going to happen. What do we want to be?
