Joe Moorhead Officially Hired as Head Football Coach
bigjim replied to Dr Z's topic in Akron Zips Football
Is there any other way to replay the interview? I do not have a SirusXM app. Please advise if possible. Thank you. -
Disagree. There are good players on the roster, but the coaching philosophy and offensive philosophy sucks. For in game strategy and adjustments, I think Arth was better in football than Groce is in hoops. Groce just has much more talent to get the wins that he has. How many games has Groce lost that he should not have lost? In Joe We Trust!!!! Cannot wait for football season. P.S. Per TV, the crowd and student section were awful.

72 Roo, Thank you for such an informative post and you did the right think in keeping the anonymity of your source. I would give you a 100 likes for the post if I could. I agree that 5 more experienced transfers will transform the Zips football team. We could be the 2022 version of No. Illinois, going from last to first in one season. i still believe there is a lot of young talent on the roster that will be supplemented with these transfers. Also, per GoZips, there are 16 R-Sr and Sr players on the roster. I do not know know if all are on scholarship, but if so, shedding some of the 'underperforming players' will open up scholly's for next years recruiting cycle. I cannot wait to see what this staff does with a full year of recruiting. Go Zips!!

Great Post. I have the following questions and comments. 1. How do you know that we have 5 scholarships left? Per GoZips, we signed 21 players and 3 PWO's. I thought the number of signings this year was increased to 32, leaving us with 11 more potential signings. With the comings and goings, I am curious how you track that number with all of the current roster players who may or may not be on scholarship. Please educate me. I am not saying you are wrong, I just want to learn. 2. I agree that many players will become available between now and fall season. However, I think the same will happen to Akron and many more scholarships will become available. I believe the staff will shed many players who are not D1 talent and have them move to FCS, DII, or DIII schools, so more scholarships will open up. 3. I filed for a Trademark on 'In Joe We Trust'. However, anyone on Zips Nation can use it. So, In Joe We Trust!!!

Grading the 22 Recruiting Class, and What Else is needed
bigjim replied to bigjim's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
I have been away for a couple of days, and as I watch the Akron Kent bball game, I respectfully disagree with you. I think that Arth had recruited many good, but young players. But he had little to no upper class leadership. I keep saying we are weak at QB, but others say I am wrong. So, if we have a good QB, what are our weaknesses that will only give Akron 4-6 wins? I think Coach JoeMo recruiting the needed positions for 2022 from the portal. Quoting 247 recruiting ratings as the ZMeister did does no good. As I stated in another post, NI went from winless to top in the MAC with a good addition from the Transfer portal. I think we are in the same position. Why can't the Zips do the same if they have a good QB as you all are saying. What positions are we missing if we have the QB? I think B&G stated his comments. I am looking for others. I do not care if you are kind as long as you love the Zips like I do. Go Zips!!! -
Grading the 22 Recruiting Class, and What Else is needed

Thanks for supporting most of my suggestions and adding more details and embellishing the team needs. I am looking at the 2022 Zips as the 2021 Northern Illionois team. The added transfers and went from winless to a top MAC team. Go Zips!!! -

I have watched the tapes of the players as well as have a contact at the U. I could be completely wrong, but I doubt it. I may be partially wrong. Go Zips!!! -
Grading the 22 Recruiting Class, and What Else is needed
bigjim replied to bigjim's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
I was hoping my post drew more comments, but I was wrong. My 7-5 prediction was based on getting one more OL and an upperclassman QB. If everyone thinks we are set at QB, then please describe our weak positions and why we will finish as bad as 4-8. As I stated in my original post, I think Coach JoeMo addressed the needed areas for 2022. I would love to hear from 72 Roo and ZMeister and others to be educated on our needs. Be kind, but I would like to know the positions that will need upgraded. Go Zips!!! -
Coach JoeMo and his staff got a late start on recruiting with the coaching change. But I still think he and his staff did a great job. In part, because of the Transfer Portal and no penalty for transfers to sit out a year for changing schools. Also, 90% of the high school signees sign in December, so I think that the job that Coach JoeMo and his staff did with the high school seniors was fantastic since we signed 10 very good high school players and some respectable PWO's. I am expecting a minimum record of 7-5 in 2022 even if we start out 1-3 with the brutal OOC schedule. Overall Grade A- High School Signees Grade A What Else is needed DL - I think we are set for 2022 with the 3 transfers. But with the transfers, only 1 will be around for 2023. I would like to see 1 more DL transfer who has at least 2 years of eligibility remaining and will be here for 2023. That will give time for the coaching staff to build a solid defensive line. Fann, Hawkins, Proffitt, Sy, Wade, and Wilson can get into the DL rotation. And freshman Murphy gets some experience. LB - If Bubba returns, I think we are set for 22. Same as DL. One more transfer who has at least 2 years of eligibility to bridge the gap to the future. DB - I think we are in good shape, even with Watts leaving. Adding Martin and Threatt should put Akron in a great position. OL - I think that we have 6-7 decent, but young linemen on the roster who have played the last couple of years. Add on the recruits, and we will be good for seasons ahead. Banes was a good pick up to transition, but I would like to see one more transfer since it is rare that offensive linemen are ready to play as freshmen. So, by 2023, this line will be fantastic. TE - I thought we were good with Brank and Ognenovic. But, youth and experience has been added with Banks and Darnell. I hope that Coach JoeMo runs a lot of 12 or 13 personnel packages. There is a lot of talent at this position. Also, need to shed some players from this position if they have scholarships. WR - Losing M&M and Qualls was tough, but I think the additions of Jacquez-Louis, Adams, Golden and Bone is a positive. RB - As I have stated, I like Norrils and Williams. But adding Kellom and Wiley brings youth and experience. I am also looking for the details of Stallworth joining this room. QB - I thought that losing Gibson was a big negative. I am not a fan of Irons or Marousek. I am a fan of Jankowski. Also, recruit Jennings had a sub 500 record in his senior year. I have said it multiple times and was hoping for a transfer QB who could lead the Zips for 1-2 years as the pipeline fills up. This lack of transfer is my reason for the A- rating. QB is the most important position in sports, and I think we are weak at this position without a transfer. In Joe We Trust!!!!

NLI National Letter of Intent (Late) Day 2022
bigjim replied to Blue & Gold's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
I was curious why Anthony Stallworth and Niko Paxos did not show up on the lists of Akron signees. I could not find anything on Stallworth, so I will go with the greyshirt assumption from above. That would be very good with Norrils and Williams on the roster and Kellom and Wiley as recruits. We should be in good shape. However, We also started with 4 running backs last year and then stuff hit the fan and it was a position of weakness. Let's hope for a different outcome this season. Regarding Paxos, I did find that he will be a walk on. First team D1 all state kicker as a walk on is good get for Akron. I also thought that Slike was very good last year. So, there will be competition at the punter/kicker position. Go Zips!!! -

NLI National Letter of Intent (Late) Day 2022
bigjim replied to Blue & Gold's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
Good post. When Coach JoeMo was announced, I re-upped my season tickets and preferred parking and paid for it on the spot. Even though the ticket office said they would bill me in June, I paid at that time. I am a Varsity A member as a former athlete and have donated to the engineering as well as athletic funds for years. So, please use your sermon on the graduates that have not contributed to the University. P.S. I have also hired probably 20 Akron graduates into my company and have been accused of favoritism. But I stand my ground. Go Zips!!!! -
NLI National Letter of Intent (Late) Day 2022

Ditto, under the assumption that the same coaching staff stays intact. However, I would expect that 2-3 members move on to bigger jobs based on the great jobs that they have and will have performed. Then, depends on who moves on, we might not have the unbelievable recruiting year. Every competent organization has staff looking for talent, and this University of Akron Coaching staff has talent. Gosh, I hope I am wrong. I want this staff here for several years. Go Zips!!! -

Thank you B&G for the fantastic job that you have done in tracking the commits and signees. The individual posts were great and staying on top of the lists was even better. Muchas Gracias!!! Go Zips!!!! -
It is now officially Christmas/Signing day Eve morning. This is the longest day of the year as we wait for the new gifts/players. It will be very curious to see if we get any more players and if we lose players that had previously committed to the University of Akron. I have to believe the coaches are working extra hard and long today. Cheers to a Merry Christmas/Signing day. In Joe We Trust!!!

I typed up a detailed dissertation on how the top parochial schools in Ohio play a very tough schedule, but I decided to delete it so as not to continue a pi##### contest. I do not care if the word 'very' is used or not. My point is: I believe we got a stud running back and I am pumped. Bowden and Arth could not have pulled it off. I am going to look at a couple of the other freshman commits. In Joe We Trust!!!
-
My bottom line is that I think we got a steal at RB who will be "very" good for the Zips.
-
Please look at the teams they played on their schedule. Also, it looks like they played 10 teams that made the playoffs. Go Zips!!!

A couple of years ago, I was very happy we signed Norrils. He was a 1st team all state RB from a smaller school at Toledo Central Caholic. I was correct in my assessment because he showed promise as a R-Fr in several games. Then, I was content to get Williams as a transfer even though he did not have much success last season. Now, we have a commit in Charles Kellom from St. X out of Cincinnati. I went back and watched his films, and this guy is a stud. He was first team D1 all state. St. X played a very challenging schedule, so the competition was very good. He ran for over 1400 yards in his senior season. But the key stat that I saw was that he did not play in the second half of 7 of his senior year games because of blowouts. Doing some simple extrapolation, if he played full games, he would have had over 1800 yards of rushing which is a phenomenal amount. Pulling all of this together, I think that Coach has secured a franchise running back for Akron. Let's get him signed and on the field ready to play. My guess is that he will see time later his freshman season and be an all MAC player by time he is a junior. In Joe We Trust!!!

I do not know how it works, but I would like to understand the process to get posted on the recruiting websites. I remember an interview with Coach Bowden a couple of years ago who said that the University communicates to 247,/Rivals/Scout for recruiting information, and he did not make those communications. So, if anyone understand the process and how it works, please communicate. As always, I do not like speculation. Go Zips!!!!

With all due respect (and I love your posts), I must disagree with you on this topic. I did some research, and he (Toth) did not see any game action at Rutgers this past season so he does not have any experience. I believe that we have several good offensive linemen currently on the roster. They were just too young having 5 freshmen on the line, but a couple of them will be coming into their own with a good OL coach (JRod) this coming season. And, we have an experienced transfer (Bane) and 3 very good commits. We need another experienced offensive lineman transfer, not another freshman if we want to compete in 2022 and be very good in 2023. It looks like Rutgers was his only P5 offer. I would like another transfer with experience and a better pedigree; the portal is full of possibilities. This will allow all of the young players to develop over the next year, have a good offensive line in 2022, and help the young players grow into a formidable offensive line for years to come. In Joe We Trust!!!
-
Thank you. I was so wrong. When I looked at 247, I saw he was committed to Akron and had no interest in the other schools. After seeing your correction, I drilled down and saw all of the offers like you posted. Now I am convinced we got 3 stud freshman offensive linemen. Thanks again for the update and correction. I am so looking forward to the late signing day. In Joe We Trust!!!

Just watched his HUDL tape, and it did not appear to be very impressive. Also, per 247, I did not see any other offers. Looking for opposition. JoeMo has been recruiting highly sought after athletes, look like this person is not. Please share how my research is wrong. I want only the best. In Joe We Trust!!!
