akzipper
Ianello started recruiting this guy a while ago and finally Jason Stargel Jr is visiting UA this weekend. My bet is he'll commit (Furman seems to be the other school in play). This is not a good way to start a sentence about a recruit. It automatically makes me think the kid is untalented. I understand there's a bit of respect in honoring the iRecruits offers, but these guys are not good and will just waste roster space... So that makes like 20 of these "diamond in the rough" players. Ianello has such a good way to find players that no other FBS schools want! How did he only win 2 games? Let's not be ridiculous. Let's see how these guys play with an actual coach first.

We've got some of the best football minds in the country on this staff. Amato was always considered one of the best recruiters in the country - for many many years. These coaches collectively have put over a hundred players in the NFL. They can spot talent - and especially the type of talent that they need specifically for their offensive and defensive schemes. AND they will get the absolute best performance out of their players - putting them in situations to succeed, not try to force them into positions or spots where they will fail. Coach Bowden simply DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO LOSE.

Coach Bowden simply DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO LOSE. Two wins in the last 24 games...five wins in the last 36 games...trust me, it makes people a little skeptical. Coach Bowden has, in 1 month, generated more goodwill and excitement regarding the Zips football program than Ianello did in 2.5 years. If this were an 800meter race, Bowden would have lapped Ianello while simultaneously running backwards and signing autographs. Great times are ahead for Zips football. But expect Zips fans to need a little time to warm up to a winner and a pro. Chalk it up to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Rivals - Willie Henry Thanks for the information! Like fans of all 120 FBS teams in the country, I'm always hoping for UA to land a talented D-linemen. I have no doubt Coach Bowden and staff will get the most out of the 2012 roster, regardless of who recruited them to UA

How many wins this season do you think most fans would be happy with? As much of a Coach Bowden and co. fan I am, I have to keep reminding myself to have realistic expectations. I think it's great to be opening the season with UCF at home - Coach Bowden lived in Orlando for 10 years, and had a daily ESPN radio show on three stations across central Florida for 4 or 5 years, so there will be a lot of attention. However, what if we don't win the game? What if we do? It will be interesting to see how everyone reacts.
Jalapeño Zippy
The problem with NE Ohio Football is that it has suffered from mediocrity for so long that people have grown impatient, but I believe Bowden will get more leniency then most do to past history and success. In looking at the schedule, 3-4 should be obtainable.

GP1
Coach Amato was seen today at the airport in Charlotte, NC. He should stop by my house for a beer if he is staying the night. However, Charlotte is a good place to connect.

Our first four games are UCF, FIU, Morgan State and Tennessee. More difficult than what we started out with last year. The Zips needed to beat Temple early last year to establish some confidence and momentum. We didn't, and the rest is history. We need to beat either UCF or FIU in order to have some confidence coming out of the Tennessee game (BCS schools are where MAC schools go to cash checks). UCF and/or FIU are must wins for the Zips next year for their confidence and momentum. Last year I saw ECU vs South Carolina in Charlotte. ECU had some really talented kids, but their schedule was set up so they did not get much confidence or momentum early in the season. They were a much more talented team than 5-7 and should have had at least 7 wins. Shows how important a schedule is to establishing winning early and then carrying that confidence and momentum into league play. The Zips can't accept starting the season at 1-3 in the hopes that the MAC will provide relief. Starting the season 2-2 is necessary for a minimum 4 win season. It's the MAC...a 2-2 start could give us five wins and fans would be happy as clams. If we start out the season 1-3, only 3 wins could happen. It would be an improvement, but somewhat of a letdown depending on how we lose.

Is it your feeling that the competition in the MAC is tougher than UCF and FIU? I think both games are winnable -- but to "bank" on one or both of them in order to have "whatever is determined to be a successful season" is unfair, IMO. P.S. Its actually possible we win at Tennessee -- not likely, but definitely possible.

I think we have to beat UCF and/or FIU to have confidence and momentum going into the MAC schedule. If not, it becomes an uphill battle, but not impossible. Some of the teams in the MAC are as good as UCF and FIU, but the vast majority aren't. Experiencing winning early in a season against non-bcs ooc teams is important for the mental state of a team. They believe they can get the job done. 2-2 looks really good if you are a Zips. 1-3 is more of the same and we all know how that turns out. "The most dangerous team is a team with confidence and momentum." - Bill Cowher It's amazing what confidence can do to a team. No surprise the best games the Zips have won this year, the JAR has either been sold out or near capacity. Same could be said about soccer. How much of an effect does the atmosphere have? If the Zips can play in front of some decent crowds next year, they will see how much the community and school cares about them. It will give them the confidence that they lacked last year, and hopefully play hard. Even watching the NFL playoffs has shown that any team can win on any given day. Did Denver have enough talent to beat Pittsburgh? Did NY have more talent than Green Bay? Did San Francisco have more talent than New Orleans? Every team will see playing us as a cake walk, but Bowden will bring the best out of them.
GP1
It's amazing what confidence can do to a team. 2011 EMU Schedule EMU has been a traditional MAC bottom dweller for a while now. Two wins against cupcakes early allowed them to think they could win or at least be competitive. Look at the scores in the MAC. With the exception of Toledo, they were competitive in every game and ended up winning six. If we can win early, that confidence and momentum carries into MAC play and we become dangerous. The MAC is a strange league in that things can turn around quickly for a program and EMU is one of those examples. Who knows, we could be that example next year. Anything can happen in the MAC. We can win...we just need to set ourselves up for success in lieu of failure.
