akronzips71
Zeke is having a great game. In fact, he showed a couple of NBA moves. And you gotta LOVE that layup by the Badger. That was smokin.
Zipmeister
I bet on them much more than against. I'd gladly piss away a few bucks to see them put on a show and win by 30. You didn't really place a wager.

Quickzips
A very unsatisfying win IMO. Zips are going to have to figure out how to stay interested for a full 40 minutes or they are going to get bit soon here. Toledo had no business being in that game as long as they were, and to let Pearson go off the way he did is unacceptable. Probably the worst defensive performance I've seen from the Zips under KD. We've had teams and individual players get hot on us, and I can accept that. I don't like it, but I can accept it. Tonight was just flat out laziness. Our defensive rotations were lazy, our box outs were lazy, our transition defense was lazy. That isn't going to fly come March. A win is a win, but to say I am disappointed with our effort is an understatement.
Blue & Gold
Well what do you know? A 14-point win. The way Zeke dominated down low tonight is how I envisioned him dominating against the entire conference when we signed him. But the conference as a whole has gotten a lot tougher down low over the last few years. Tonight, however, Zeke was clearly a head taller than anyone futilely trying to guard him one-on-one. Toledo's Ryan Pierson (sp?) is sick.
UAZipster0305
IMO, Toledo played their absolute best tonight, and we played average. The 14 point difference says a lot about the relative talent levels. Pearson had some ridiculous shots over Zeke. That guy is fun to watch! cms133@uakron.edu
I thought the defense was ok... in the first half at least. We caused a lot of turnovers, kinda reminded me of the Miss State game with all the steals.
akronzips71
Pearson is headed to the NBA. He is a great player, way out of his league in the MAC. What was the technical for? The feed went down.
The Hip Zip
Pearson is headed to the NBA. He is a great player, way out of his league in the MAC. Give Toledo's vast improvement from last season, I would have no problem with him winning the MAC MVP this year
johnnyzip84
Pearson is headed to the NBA. He is a great player, way out of his league in the MAC. What was the technical for? The feed went down. They called Pearson for hanging on the rim, which was a pretty weak call. But that made up for a number of calls that went his way like phantom touches from Zeke and the time he slammed into Nik near the baseline during a scramble and they simply called Serb for dribbling it out. He's very good no doubt, but I hate seeing one guy getting calls all night long. Then again, he does take it strong with great persistance. At least Q started giving it right back. The switch to the 2-3 saved our butts tonight. I know KD doesn't like playing it too much, but there are definitely times where we need it. Quickzips
I thought the defense was ok... in the first half at least. We caused a lot of turnovers, kinda reminded me of the Miss State game with all the steals. Causing turnovers isn't good defense, it is poor offense. Toledo was shooting above 50% in the first half. Not acceptable. The defense was a shell. Lots of pressure out high and gambling to try to force turnovers with nothing underneath other than hoping Zeke can clean up the mess. I give Zeke a lot of flack when he gets into foul trouble. Tonight it was not of his making. Our guys consistently put him in bad positions by gambling for steals, not moving their feet and generally playing matador defense. Pearson repeatedly walked to the hole without anyone challenging him until he got to Zeke who was left to try and clean up the mess. The young guys in particular were bad. As good as Harney is on offense (although it didn't show tonight), his lack of effort on defense is very unsettling. I don't know if he has Sasha Pavlovic syndrome or what it is. Tree at least tries on the defensive end, although his fundamentals are pretty poor. I know we just won by double digits, and we are 7-1 and leading the conference, but I am not happy with that performance. Toledo had not business being within 25 of us in that game. None at all. Any kind of effort on defense and we are watching Egner, Deji, Oldham and Peterson mop up that game for the final 5 minutes. That kind of effort is not going to cut it come March. Not even close. bigsix0
I don't think the technical was for hanging on the rim as much as it was slapping the backboard.
RowdyZip
I did notice a lot of matador defense on the perimeter. Hope Dambrot gets on the guys for getting complacent with the 7 footer inside. Zeke did a great job tonight, and was honestly the difference in the game. Our guards and wings were a step behind and Zeke stopped and altered a TON of shots.

To us it might have appeared that way, but in the postgame Dambrot said he told Zeke he hadn't seen him get beat that much since he was a freshman. To the untrained eye, I thought he did pretty well too. Maybe there are just much higher expectations for him.
phil
I thought Toledo played well offensively. They shot the ball well and made their foul shots. They were also getting several layoffs off their set offense which should never happen against a Dambrot coached team. Our foul shooting was terrible the first half and kept Toledo in the game. It was nice to see McClanahan have a great game. I think Walsh has been struggling a little bit to find his open shot. I would also like Nik to go back to last years game where he took the ball inside and had great drop step moves. He took two 3 pointers, missed both and air balled one. He has quick first stop for a forward and is a good passer. However, he seems to start every game with turnovers. I hated the refs tonight. Way to many calls on touch fouls that did not influence play. I did not understand the hanging on the rim T since it looked like he hung on the rim so that he would not land on another player. Somebody thought he got the T for hitting the backboard while hanging on the rim. Looking forward to Satudays game.
Dave in Green
I think this Zips team now believes that they can turn it on whenever they need to, and that they're perfectly satisfied to just win without blowing out other teams. As long as they keep doing it, everything's just fine. If they stumble at some point, can't turn it on, and lose, that will be a wakeup call. OZoner
I worry about games like this. We are fresh off a solid road trip and come back to face another one of the MAC cellar dwellers . I recall the Toledo game in the '09 tourney somewhat when we needed a miracle play ( By Humpty??) to put it into overtime. Granted, Toledo had a much better team that season led by Amos and K E N T. One of my favorite games ever. So much fun. My recap of that game: http://macreportonline.com/index.php/20090...n-OT-93-92.html
wadszip
I think this Zips team now believes that they can turn it on whenever they need to, and that they're perfectly satisfied to just win without blowing out other teams. As long as they keep doing it, everything's just fine. If they stumble at some point, can't turn it on, and lose, that will be a wakeup call. I disagree that everything's just fine even with one loss, only because it's hard to believe the mediocre play won't catch up to them. Are they the most talented team in the league? Yes. Are they in first place? Yes. But, despite them being the most talented team in the league, and most nights they can just turn it on when they need and get by, how long will that get them by? Especially on the road against Ohio or Can't, or more importantly in Cleveland? True they are now 7-1 in the league, but they've yet to play what I'd consider a complete game in MAC play. I know, a win is a win, and this isn't specific to you, but anybody thinking they are in great shape because they are 7-1 only flies if you haven't been watching the games. Again, this was not a good win. True a 14-point win appears good, but Toledo was able to break down the perimeter defense at will. And I'll disagree if KD really blamed Zeke for not being as good as he normally is around the rim defensively. It's hard, even for a 7-footer, to be every where at once. Pearson (despite some Michael Jordan calls ... though he got called for a bad tech) and Brown abused the Zips on the perimeter, forcing Zeke and the other bigs to cover for those mistakes. Offensively, I thought they played pretty well. Took a little too many quick threes, but that was my only complaint. The turnovers were too high, but it seemed like the careless mistakes were cut down. At the same time, they did a great job on the offensive glass. I'm not in panic mode by any means, but this team still has a lot of improvement to make before it can think of winning the MAC tourney, let alone a tournament game. Let's face it, we're eight games into league play (halfway point) and this team, despite the 7-1 record, has not played a very good game for more than a half. The Hip Zip
One of my favorite games ever. So much fun. My recap of that game: http://macreportonline.com/index.php/20090...n-OT-93-92.html Thanks much JSF, I recalled the game winner but forgot about the Humpty 3 to send it to OT. He essentially won the game twice for us when it appeared that we were toast. Glad you had this one archived for us. We have certainly lived on the edge while playing in Cleveland. McNees saved our butts a couple of times as well with late heroics. I have been to macreportonline many times but never checked out the archives. Great stuff from you and your fellow writers. Captain Kangaroo
Let's face it, we're eight games into league play (halfway point) and this team, despite the 7-1 record, has not played a very good game for more than a half. I like this observation. It seems every game for the Zips is a struggle, followed by a good half. Sleep-walk, followed by a good half. Build a big lead over the course of 5 minutes...give it away over the course of 5 minutes. Abreu is maddening...one second he looks like the best PG in Zips history...then he commits multiple, crazy, unforced turnovers. Reducing the unforced turnovers is a big key to the Zips reaching their potential. Abreu and Cventinovic top the list of "those who have room for improvement." Conversely, Diggs has been fantastic over the past several weeks. And Gilliam is rounding into form as well. Is it wrong for Zeke to have 5 blocks...and for me to be disappointed he didn't have 10? Probably, but I'm sure he'll look at the game tape and see there were 5 big fat ones he could have swatted into the GA upper-deck. You never got the feeling we were going to lose last night's game. But you knew we'd never put the dagger in 'em either. Final note: Pearson is fun to watch. He's what I'd envision DJ Cooper would be like, if he were 6' 4". msopher
My Rockets weren't going to win this one but I'm glad they competed. What I like most about Akron is their outside shooting. Seems like you have a lot of options from out there. Plus, Zeke is a good player, just needs to not let opposing players get in his head. Him and Pearson jawed backed and forth all game. Both teams turned the ball over way too much.

He's what I'd envision DJ Cooper would be like, if he were 6' 4".KD made the comment after the game last night, "I told Zeke I haven't seen that many shots go over him since his freshman year." I saw Zeke jawing last night. I can't decide if that is good or bad for him. McClanahan made an interesting comment after the game. He said something to the fact that the team is not playing with a chip on their shoulder yet (not mad at anyone). Those weren't his words, but I can't remember how he phrased it. Rian is worth the price of admission for Toledo fans. He is smooooooth. I like how he attacks the rim. PS I thought Zeke played well in the zone defense last night. Good job of KD switching when he did. Treadwell needs to work on his zone D.
