RootforRoo44
I say wear them anyways. That would be too smart of a move for a group like UA athletics. I think some athletic departments forget who signs the NCAA's checks. No one is harmed and no quality of play is lessened by a twitter handle on a jersey. DO IT ANYWAY. bUAkronG
I disagree about wearing them anyway. What happens if the NCAA comes down harshly and bans us from the postseason? Then would it have been worth it? I think not. And with the NCAA as corrupt as it is, you never know.
Dr Z
A well placed leak to a national media outlet about the "block" to wear them would be my next move.

How did that work out for the Zips? Again, still the Zips fault. Shocking that people are still blaming the NCAA because the University can't run an athletics department properly. As far as the jerseys go, maybe you're right, but i'd take that chance. They definitely wouldn't do anything this year.
Dave in Green
@RootforRoo44, that's hilarious! I know you're too smart to advocate taking a chance on an NCAA penalty for the Zips, maybe not this year but maybe next year or the year after, for a freaking uniform design that the NCAA has ruled not acceptable. Seriously, I know that you and every other Zips fan reading this knows that when you weigh all the pros and cons of deliberately thumbing your nose at the NCAA over a trivial issue, there's only one rational conclusion. But it's entertaining on a sports forum to throw out irrational scenarios for chuckles.

But it's entertaining on a sports forum to throw out irrational scenarios for chuckles. We all know the NCAA would have done nothing over this if they just put the twitter handle down the leg or something. The idea to put it on the back of the jersey was kind of odd to begin with. Now "thumbing our nose" at the NCAA over a trivial issue is probably pointless and stupid, but it's about time someone started standing up to the crooked NCAA. I also think that the press that this is getting is great for pointing out the classless idiots in Indianapolis who didn't allow several teams to honor their deceased players with nice tributes. So if that's what comes of it to "fight the good fight", then sure i'm all for it....and that's not irrational at all.
wadszip
Looks like the marketing idea has worked, even without working.... http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaab-the-da...886--ncaab.html Props to whoever thought of this idea. It was easily a no-go from the start, but still got national attention. Actually, genius, the Zips won't wear a gimmick jersey for the game itself, but already got the point they were trying to make out there. Interesting to see if @zipsmbb will start to get more followers after this article.
wadszip
After reading some of the 150 comments on the yahoo article (as I type this), one sticks out to me: "Who's idea was this? Jackie Moon?" Too funny. Though Akron isn't at Jackie Moon's level. Won't get there until KD has the team wear eye-liner, or he wrestles a bear at halftime. ... Or he has an "incredibly dirty hippie" shoot a full-court shot for 10,000 dollars under a fake Busch ... Bavarian ... promo. (though that is a promo Can't should think about). Still, Saturday will be "the Akron, Ohio Mega Bowl," which will be even better than the discovery of fire or the invention of the submarine. mes102
I saw that Jay Bilas, Pat Forde, Zac Jackson, Michael DeCourcy, Fran Fraschilla, Mike and Mike in the Morning, Darren Rovell, Andy Katz, Seth Greenberg, Seth Davis, and others received or are receiving jerseys.... Quite remarkable actually. Don't get to say this often, so I'll say it when I can...GREAT JOB MARKETING DEPARTMENT!!!!!!! Seth Greenberg already tweeted about the jersey and talked a little Akron basketball as well: Seth Greenberg Akron Tweet #1 Seth Greenberg Akron Tweet #2 Seth Greenberg Akron Tweet #

Zac Jackson's article on social media night Gotta love the media attention a game with two undefeated teams will bring in the area. Can't (not k.e.n.t, although they did get blown out there) get caught looking past BG, especially on the road.
Blue & Gold
The Z is growing on me. I think the jerseys look kind of sharp. I love the Z logo. I wish we could buy official jerseys. I'd also want a grey. (I'd also like a pair of both the black & grey shorts - actually, going to the gym & whatnot, I'd probably end up wearing those more often than the tops. Lol.) And next year and thereafter... GOLD! These blacks w/ the Z are sweet.
Dave in Green
I do like the emphasis on the Z. It's an uncommon letter in college basketball team names. The only association that pops into my head is the Zona nickname adopted by the University of Arizona. Used in creative ways, Z could easily become a simple and unique identifier for the Zips in the same way that X is associated with Xavier. Gonzaga has "Zags" but there official nickname is Bulldogs, so that's similar to Zona. I think they even had a black "Zags" jersey a few seasons back. I believe the Zips are the only team with an actual team/nickname beginning with Z. That's the one part of our history that I'm most proud of. With all the bulldogs, tigers, cardinals, bobcats, wildcats, bears, etc in sports, it's refreshing to have something original.

I like the "Z" but it actually looks like it needs a little tweaking to my eyes. I actually like how the "Z" in the zips logo at the top of this board looks slightly more stylized and sleek when compared to the standalone Z logo. What is a zip anyway? Ignoring the story of it's origins, "zip" implies something quick. I think the "Z" should be lower and sleeker and leaning into it's long points more, like a bent bolt of power. I think with the right tweaks to be dashing and potent, and made prevalent, the Z symbol could indeed be turned into a recognizable brand like The X alluded to above, for the reasons mentioned above, because there really wouldn't be much competition for recognizably. I think there's a difference between the Z and X. Xavier is the school name, where as Zips is only our nickname. That's why I think the A-Zippy logo has to always be prominent, with Z only used as a secondary mark. I do think a metallic gold Z would look awesome on the side of a blue football helmet... Yep, its pretty unique, the only other reference I could find to a Z nickname is Zias of Eastern New Mexico which is used for their women's teams only. There are 41 Bulldogs and 25 Wildcats (no wonder Arizona and Gonzaga tried to use their Z). I always felt that UA should use that as a marketing slogan for the school - "We've got everything covered - from A to Z". TM And for OU - 16 Bobcats. The only unique names in the MAC are Zips, Golden Flashes and Chippewas. And there are three Redhawks but only Miami uses a capital H. I just added them to my meager twitter account to help boost the number since they announced it. With that and Seth Davis' tweeting about his custom made shirt and giving the Zips some more pub, I really like the move.

These blacks w/ the Z are sweet. I actually emailed them regarding this and was told to "talk to the bookstore". When i asked what that meant, they basically said i should call the bookstore and ask them to stock more basketball stuff, completely dodging my question on how i could get an official replica jersey. I don't understand why they don't sell replica and/or authentic jerseys at games? Plenty of people (like me) would buy both the shorts and the jersey. This has been a problem for years now. If only it could be as easy as it was to get a Zips hockey jersey: Oh yeah, and look, GOLD!
