Totally in for the Michigan game! I went to the Akron vs. OSU and Akron vs. Tennessee games. Tennessee game was lots of fun, supposed to be a blow out the entire game but we were in it till the end! Tenn fans all around me were extremely nervous! However, they were much nicer to me than the OSU fans...

I don't know who Chris Driver is but he is apparently advocating (I'm sure tongue in cheek) for a MAC-Sun Belt football challenge.

Michigan fans will treat you great(i'ts not ohio a&M). Once again park downtown in the garages and check out the campus. Law Library at night is quite a sight and the city has great adult establishments. Maize and Blue Delli is a must if you have the time.

If you visit the Law Library be sure to take your darts and visit the reading room. You can use the cork floor as your target.

2013 Strength of schedule--According to Phil Steele...

6th.

Ouch.

Link

Since this list is based entirely on last year's records, without taking into account things like relative conference strength for instance, it's not too surprising since we already knew the MAC did UA no favors with the conference scheduling and the MAC is coming off a banner year. I believe the schedule is daunting, but no way is it the 6th most difficult in the country. It is probably one of the toughest in the MAC, however.

Surely, you are not questioning Phil Steele's expert analysis!

Kickoff times announced

I like the 6:00 pm starts for JMU and Lousiana., but buried at the bottom of the story is UA's annual attempt to screw loyal Lot 9 tailgaters. Honestly, what is the deal with the athletic department on this issue?

• Those who purchase tickets in the Priority Reserved (starting at $250), Reserved ($120) and Family Plan (four tickets – including at least two youth – for $240) sections will receive a complimentary parking pass (one per every four season tickets purchased). Priority Reserved and Reserved season ticketholders also will receive $30 in concessions vouchers.

All parking that is provided to Priority Reserved and Reserved season ticketholders is in Lot 36, the deck on East Exchange Street. Ticketholders can upgrade parking to a tailgate lot closer to the stadium for $50 ($25 of which is a contribution to the Z-Fund). To be eligible to purchase a pass for Lot 9, the ticketholder must be a Z-Fund donor of at least $100 (includes premium seating donation portions) since August 2012, and that amount can apply to parking for only one football season.

So it looks like a $50 increase for some of us to tailgate in Lot 9 this year, although it's hard to draw any conclusions since the written policy and how it eventually plays out never seem to mesh from year to year. It also looks like non Z-Fund donors are getting the boot. We shall see.

That's a good point. As I stated, it's not the difficulty as much as the pointlessness of the way it's scheduled that i'm mad about. Why even have divisions if you aren't going to schedule their games correctly?

IMO, the MAC knows exactly what they're doing. They're giving the best teams easier schedules to help them get bowl eligible. Steve French has talked about this for a long time.

Everyone does it. As great as the SEC is, even their OOC schedules are mostly a joke. As a conference, you want as many bowls as possible. For the MAC in general, it's working. For our team, it stinks (right now).

I'm not a big fan of 6:00 starting times, but early in the year is a good time of the year to start later for a couple of reasons. First, the weather is still warm enough to not be cold after the sun goes down. I believe the sun is a good thing. Since moving to the south, my blood has gotten pretty thin and I don't like the cold. I may go to the LA game so I'll just have to bring a parka.

Secondly, the networks like to save the "premier" games for prime time now. Early season college football games are usually not very interesting so there isn't much to stay at home an watch that is of much interest.

Love the 6pm September starts!

Lots of kids are playing baseball, lacrosse, football, etc on fall Saturday mornings and afternoons. It gives parents in my age bracket a chance to attend their kid's events and also Zips football games.

All-day tailgating in great September weather is a bonus for quite a few people too.

RE: Unfair scheduling of crossover games-

Its important to look over multiple seasons to get a fair sample size, here are the 12 most recent crossover games scheduled against the 6 MAC West teams-

BSU- 2

CMU- 2

EMU- 1

NIU- 3

UT- 2

WMU- 2

1 game out of 12 was rotated from a bad team (EMU) to a good one (NIU), could have been intentional, or could be just the way the schedule worked out. Overall I think its a pretty fair distribution, given the challenges that come with creating a 13 team schedule.

Same here. I love the evening game time.

Agree. We had tons of conflicts with football last year because of kid's games.

I don't know why everyone (not just Akron) has such a resistance to later games. I love late starts.

Early games suck. No time for tailgating, no time for family stuff that usually occurs at the same time, I don't know why people prefer them.

People that prefer them do so for tradition's sake. Saturday afternoon is college football time.

But that's for the BCS programs. Akron needs to find a niche, away from the din of the BCS. Night football isn't a solution for automatic sell-outs, but it helps small-market teams like the Zips, where the game isn't some long-engrained fall tradition, but something fun to do on a Saturday once your honey-do list and kid's stuff is done.

Another scheduling quirk that could help turn around a program like Akron is happening in Buffalo right now - they are leading the East and probably gaining confidence despite the fact they have played absolutely no one of consequence in the MAC. They are 4-0 in conference and have played the murderers row of EMU, WMU, UMass and Can't State who are a combined 3-15 and the only game that group has won that was not against each other was Miami. My point is schedule matters a lot, I believe that the Zips could be in the exact same spot given that schedule. We better not get NIU, Ball St and Toledo again next year (and either kick UMass out or get another football only school, this unbalanced thing sucks, the East champion should be the best team in the East not just the one who drew the most favorable West teams) but I believe Buffalo is in for a hard fall soon. I know complaining about the schedule isn't viewed well in some circles but the Zips could have used a break this year. Zips to beat Can't State and UMass and end the season with 4 well deserved wins. I hope next year treats us a little better.

Last year I wrote down every conference game over the past ten years, and by trends that appeared ins scheduling, was able to predict our schedule with 100% accuracy. I was actually shocked how good my prediction was.

Going by that same method our opponents next year should be: OOC; Penn State, Marshall, Pitt, (?). Conference; Ohio, Can't, UMass, Buffalo, Miami, EMU, WMU, CMU. Which by all accounts this should be a 7-5 (or better) season.

We play Can't, Ohio, Miami every year, as well as Temple every year (UMass takes Temple's scheduling spot), Buffalo and BGSU alternate every couple of years on our schedule (usually 1v1 than two years off). And west teams are usually not faced 3x years in a row. Of course this is just based upon the trend I've seen.

Complaining without making salient discussion points may be frowned on. But you and @Balsy made some interesting points about the effects of scheduling. Good observations.

I'll go at this again.

While we have done nothing to deserve favorable treatment from the Conference and have only our AD to blame for the current condition of the program, I hope the MAC treats us a little better next year. I hope our AD goes into the Conference meetings and lobbies for a little more favorable schedule. We deserve it after, like you said, drawing NIU, BSU and Toledo. Scheduling is critical to gaining momentum in a program/season. We need the MAC to get off of our throats.

If you're right (and I hope you are) I will happily take the tougher schedule in a year when we're not as good and take a little easier schedule in a year where we should be better.
