Tressel news?

As much as I'd selfishly like to see Mr. Tressel more focused on raising funds for a new basketball arena, apparently that's been a much smaller part of his responsibilities than originally envisioned. Increasing freshman applications by 48% in one year is a good metric to help judge where his time has been spent and what his true value to UA has been. An overall stronger, healthier UA will eventually result in a new basketball arena.

Thanks for posting. Good interview..."It will be an interesting time in the next few weeks, I wouldn't count anything out" -James Patrick

He reminds me of a politician the way he answers questions. I hope he gets the job he desires, as long as it isn't in western PA.

Is this the first time you noticed that?? Seriously!

You beat me to it CK. I can almost envision the headline in the Columbus paper...Tressel to Michigan.

From the comments under CK's link, it doesn't seem like Lion fans are going to welcome this with open arms.

I wonder if the front office is waiting to see what initial fan reaction is before giving the approval.

Pending approval? CBSsports.com

Full ESPN insider article found here.

New Detroit Lions coach Jim Caldwell is in the process of putting together a staff that can take a talented team to a championship. One of the first names that popped up to have a significant role on Caldwell's staff was former Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel, a colleague of Caldwell's during the one year they were together in Indianapolis. There's even talk that a deal with Tressel is already in place, with only approval from the front office remaining, though that is unconfirmed. Tressel is currently in a leadership position at the University of Akron but one would think he'd jump without hesitation for a chance to coach in the NFL, especially because he is temporarily banned from coaching in the NCAA because of a show cause penalty. Tressel worked as a replay-review consultant under Caldwell with the Colts in 2011.

I never thought that a replay review consultant on your resume would pay off so big!?!

First, I don't see any way JT goes to work for Detroit unless his two main options fail. He likes being the head guy and for many, many years was the head guy at tosu and ysu. I think this rumor does two things.

First, it forces UofA to poop or get off of the pot with JT. He either gets the nod to become President or not. A guy who is accustomed to making millions a year is not going to sit around Akron forever if he gets passed over so he is going to have to move himself into the upper income bracket quickly. Speed if very important to Tressel right now as he is 61 and needs to make a quick move if he is going to make one.

Second, it places pressure on the Browns to make a decision if JT is interested in the job. Those who want the Browns job must be feeling jittery right about now. JT may be one of those people.

The conversation between Tressel and the Lions might be, "Ideally, I want either the Presidents position at Akron or head coach of the Browns. If both fall through, I'll start looking for a place in Auburn Hills. Let's keep this offer open for now and revisit it in a couple of weeks."

Not looking like James is going to get the green light.

Browns expected to offer their HC job to Bills DC Mike Pettine per Adam Schefter.

It looks like the Browns turned over every stone, researched the best candidates and conducted hard hitting interviews to find the only guy who would want that job.

EDIT: Looks like he got the job. His next step should be to rent an apartment on a month-to-month basis.

  • 4 weeks later...

The pressure mounts on the YSU Board of Trustees to hire Tressel. Pretty impressive list of signatures on the letter.

My thinking is that if he takes it, he wasn't going to be president here. He wouldn't choose YSU over us if he had an inkling he would become our president, right?

This has me thinking.....

OSWho just had a president resign, and hired a new president. I never remember his name coming up at all. And this is a place where many mindless honks have certainly ignored everything that has come out, and still blindly worship the ground he walks on.

So, do you wonder what YSU and Akron must be thinking? Is it possible that even the powers that be down in the capital of corruption in college athletics realize that it would have been a really ill-advised hire? Was this guy who some people are hoping to be our next president even remotely considered to be a candidate at all?
