Balsy
I was both unhappy and happy with last night's performance. My BIGGEST criticism was the overhyped "Renovations" they made to the JAR. When I heard "LED light displays" I expected more than a little fogger with blue lights...I was hoping for some ambient lighting where the fans are...but I suppose I'm expecting too much. "Think Bigger!...well...maybe not THAT big."

"Think Bigger!...well...maybe not THAT big." Agreed. I was, unfortunately, unable to attend last night's game, but saw a glimpse of pre game team intros @gozips.com & was pretty underwhelmed. I thought the excitement surrounding the new lighting system was in large part due to the fact we could now turn the lights off during pre game intros. Whatever. Looked like a great crowd for an opener & they got to see a Zips win. Go Zips!
LZIp
Thought Pat played well, better than usual, anyways. Tree's shots didn't seem to be falling for the most part, but besides that he did everything else great as always. Kretz and McAdams hit some nice shots off of the bench.Diggs is going to be key for us this season if we are going to do anything in the tourney. Thought he played great excluding the turnovers. I agree with the posters above about the intros. I'm glad that type of stuff is improving, but they still have a ways to go. Why not just shut all of the lights off instead of leaving the bleacher lights on for whatever reason during the player introductions? I like that the band is now up top, but if you are going to put all of the students on one side of the bleachers, please make it a true student section and make sure it is ONLY students who sit there. It is crowded enough without families sitting there. Think I need to see the chiropractor after last night. Also, what are the seats behind the hoop where the band used to be now? Looked half Rowdies/half regular fans. Pick one or the other, IMO. Bottom line: 1-0. beat the gaels

"Think Bigger!...well...maybe not THAT big." Obviously you were not at the game as in, in the arena. For if you were, you would have quickly noticed that the entire overheard lighting was completely replaced with fast acting blue-white LEDs. No more dull yellow under tone. The new lighting is far superior to the old incandescent bulb and bell shaped reflectors. I do not know how many lumens better this new system is, however, I can state that it is brighter and easier on your eyes. The little light displays used during player introductions are not the new lighting system. Also, the new lighting was a gift to the university. Zipmeister
I’ve been trying to find a line as well, but it’s no dice. I can only draw one conclusion from that: The houses don’t want any part of this game. Maybe they’re afraid that no matter how high they put the spread, there would be a good chance of the Zips covering? A better conclusion is nobody is interested in betting on the game. Bookies don't set point spreads to kill time; they set them so that they can make money.
Dave in Green
@GoZips, the new lighting replacing the old metal halide fixtures over the court looks to me like T5 fluorescent, not LED. There's no question that watching game play was easier on my eyes and improved my game experience. I also thought the ability to turn off the new lights for player intros added a lot to the show. It had more of a bigtime feel than with the previous always-on metal halide warehouse lighting. But I agree things could get even better by adding more special effects LED and/or laser lights in the darkness during the intros. Just keep improving one step at a time. zippy5
I think turning off all of the lights is needed. It was frankly a little lame with the lights on above the bleachers. Felt like a high school dance
Dave in Green
Safety regulations require some lighting in seating areas, where some fans are still walking to and from their seats during intros. Even movie theaters can't go pitch black when the movie starts.
LZIp
Cavs games are pitch black during player intros. I'd assume all NBA teams are.
tpsjugglerdude
Can we get Zippy to repel from the rafters again? That would be pretty cool for a new pre game tradition. I know insurance was high and they weren't allowed to let the normal Zippys be the ones to come down, but they can get that figured out. ZachTheZip
Cavs games are pitch black during player intros. I'd assume all NBA teams are. The Q has running lights on their stairways. The JAR, with wooden bleacher seating, obviously does not.
ZachTheZip
I guess I'll be the one to bring up the officiating. Horrible. Just horrible. New rules or no, inconsistency was the name of the game. Either call things a certain way all game or don't call it. They had as much to do with knocking the wind out of our sails as anything else last night. These Big South guys were right there with the worst of the MAC refs. LZIp
The Q has running lights on their stairways. The JAR, with wooden bleacher seating, obviously does not. Good point, but then why are we able to turn the lights out over the bleachers that run parallel with the court?
Dave in Green
@ZachTheZip, yep, most modern arenas are designed with running lights on all pathways to seating areas, like the aisle safety lights on airliners. All arenas, theaters, etc., are required by safety regulations to keep seating area pathways lighted when the main lights are out. The JAR is being patched up as much as possible with limited resources. It's never going to match a modern arena. I appreciate that they're doing the best they can with what they have to work with. Dave in Green
Are we allowed to talk about the officiating without the AOCL (Anti Officiating Criticism League) trying to stifle our free speech? For the benefit of AOCL members reading this, the following does not represent an "excuse" but just simple observations. I do believe the officials assisted CC's comeback by allowing them to play more aggressive defense without calling fouls on more physical contact than the Zips were allowed to use on defense. In a closer game against a better opponent, it could have cost the Zips the game. But it would take an analysis of the game film to verify that I saw Zips players literally being knocked off their feet with no calls while at the other end of the court light touch fouls were being called against the Zips. That does have a tendency to shift momentum.

That does have a tendency to shift momentum. I must agree. While limited to the TV angles, there were several plays where the was no call on Zips being literally knocked off their feet. And on one play, Tree got hit in the chops. No call. On another note, who do we contact at MAC Sports to get the on screen scoreboard fixed. It is way too big and the MAC log blocks out the basket on many plays. I think this was an issue last year too. In an era when I can call someone in Israel on their US cellphone number and be connected instantly, one would think they could do a score strip like on real TV that does not interfere with the view of the game. Or maybe the same company that did Obama Care did this web cast.

ZachTheZip
Nobody says anything about the attendance? 4,217 Zips fans. Biggest ever crowd for a game played before New Years, and the second largest student attendance in the Dambrot era.

Biggest ever crowd for a game played before New Years, and the second largest student attendance in the Dambrot era. Yeah that was awesome. Keep winning and we'll see a bunch of 5K crowds I think. They deserve it too. I was shocked to see the student section full - and it looked to be 95% actual students too, not just randoms sitting there. roopride
They need to figure out how to connect the students at courtside with the upper deck.

I did think the lights looked newer and nicer, but after all the hype it was rather underwhelming. EXTREMELY underwhelming actually. Like I was thinking something a (in addition to the LED lighting over the court) more flashy...but perhaps that's my expectations when I heard UA was improving the game-day experience. Perhaps it's my young eyes, but I only really noticed the yellow dull under-town while I watched on TV or from pictures. I don't want to come across as overly critical...but there's always room to improve. We've taken a couple of steps in the right direction. I will say the "Bsketball Holiday Pack" that's being advertised seems like an EXCELLENT deal, especially for those of us graduating in December.
