Breakout Season In 2014 for Pohl?

Gotta disagree with GP1 on this one. While Pohl may be the best we have, he has not shown he is a D1 QB. His play to date is under par. Sorry. Yes, he had several drops vs. PSU, but he also missed many receivers in the second half. I have zero confidence in the guy. I hope he proves me wrong.

what is your definition of "par"?

He will be magically better when the MAC season starts. He will look bad today though.

Balsy you were correct. Not a coincidence that on the greatest rushing day by the best Akron RB this season against a legit opponent that they pull the huge upset. Pohl is what he is. Thats not a playmaker or a game changer. Can't put the game on his back. Not capable. If Bowden tries to go back to the 'no run offense' he will blow what now could be a very promising MAC season. Keep the fire under Pohl's ass by inserting Woodson judiciously. And, keep the ball out of Pohl's hands by running the ball. If the D can continue to control games, look out.

Sorry folks had to finally chime in.

Like him or not, Pohl is the starter. Not sure what wasting plays with a back up does. Badly needed to get running game going. Great job Zips.

I guess TB is just as "ignorant" and "high school thinking" as I am. You're a fucking idiot. Non-conference games are the time to figure out your QB situation, and TB was clearly thinking the same as I was: your starter has sucked, so give the other guy meaningful snaps and see what he's got. Unfortunately for the Zips, that wasn't much, and we head into conference play without a viable QB. It was certainly worth finding out though. Hopefully we can continue to employ the same formula as we did today and win with the running game and solid defense.

I guess you and Bowden had to figure out what I already knew. Some people are just smarter than others. Looking forward to Pohl leading the team to a bowl. Looking forward to watching the entire team in fact. Lots of good players.

Bullshit, your entire argument was that it would "kill the confidence of the team" to give another QB snaps (which shows me right here you never played a damn down in your life). Those couple of series with Woodson today really put the team into the toilet confidence wise, huh? You said nothing about the relative skill levels of Pohl to Woodson. Quite frankly, this game didn't even show that Pohl was better, they both played like shit. It just showed that we don't have a QB. You argument against playing other guys at the position was complete BS and shown to be so.

well that escalated quickly. Pohl is just fine at QB. Woodson looked alright as well I thought. I did think putting him in was dumb though. Biggest issue is the WRs catching the ball. Pohl's interception? Never would have happened if Goodman lined up correctly. Not to mention it was a good play by the FS. Play before would have been more than likely been a TD pass to Smith.

No offense Lady Zip but I think you're smokin Pohl's pole. KP may be a serviceable (pun intended) option the rest of the season, but I'm really hoping a young guy steps up and takes his job for 2015.

I was at the USC vs. Missouri game last night and it got me thinking about this topic. (BTW, John Anderson from Sports Center and his college buddies were tailgating in the spot next to mine as he is a Missouri grad. Great guy.)

Where are all of the great back up QBs fans are always calling for? Half of the starters I see stink. Surely, Missouri has someone on their team better than Mauk and SC has someone on their team better than Thompson. Those guys were terrible last night in general. Mauk though found the ability to lead his team on a couple of scoring drives late in the game by hitting a couple of big play. (The game was the perfect example of Cowher's theory about confidence and momentum.) Isn't that what it is all about? So keep this in mind. With Pohl, Akron is now 6-3 in their last nine games with wins against against a bowl team (Toledo) and Pitt (BCS level). The next three games are winnable for the Zips and they could be 9-3 over a 12 game stretch, which is the length of a season. So, before you go reaching for your stat sheets and making assumptions about the mental state of people, the only stat that really matters is wins and the team has started to win around Pohl. Pohl is a good game manager and as long as the defense continues to play good and they can keep up with the running game the Zips should win the next three and be 9-3 over their last 12.

I was happy to see Bowden put Woodson in for a couple of series. Pohl needs to lead the offense and he was not doing so. The pass that was intercepted was a horrible decision by Pohl, given the coverage. Sometimes sitting the starter for a couple of series gives them the opportunity to need to prove themselves. It also gave Woodson some live snaps with the first team. He looked fine. Receivers seem to drop passes for him, too. It was nice that Woodson had the chance to play a few snaps in front of his family and friends in Pittsburgh.

Believe it or not, Coach Bowden knows what he is doing and knows the strengths, weaknesses, and what will motivate his QBs better than any of us.

Fair enough. I just thought you were sounding like a Browns fan and channeling that energy.

How is it like the Browns thinking to want better QB play? You cannot tell me with all seriousness that Kyle Pohl's play is the best that we can have? Tra'von Chapman looks better than Pohl in the limited play I've seen, but he cannot play this season.

There ABSOLUTELY should be a QB competition in the off season. Pohl assumed as the starter, and give all the QBs on the roster a shot to surpass him.

For a long time I though Hundley looked BETTER than Chisholm, yet Chisholm remained in the No. 1 position. Hundley was given the chance at No. 1 yesterday and thrived. If you don't give guys the chance to compete, you don't improve.

Go Fuckin ZIPS!!!!

GO ZIPS! :gun:

The problem is, Pohl shouldn't have thrown the ball to Goodman. As QB you should recognize the guys isn't open, and isn't going to get open. RedZone turnovers in a close game are absolutely unacceptable. I have no problem with putting other guys into the mix to send a message to the players that NO ONE is safe. You either RISE and dish-out or sit on the bench. (I'm looking at you Jawon Chisholm).

KP may be a serviceable (pun intended) option the rest of the season, but I'm really hoping a young guy steps up and takes his job for 2015.

I'm with you on that one. If anything, a legitimate competition for the No. 1 will make the team better. Chandler Kincade, Tommy Woodson, Tra'von Chapman....these guys have a higher potential ceiling than Pohl does.

But what needs to be said is: GO POHL GO! He's our QB for now, and everyone on our team needs to be supported because we're on track to having our best season in almost a decade.

Enjoy the season ZipsNation, stop the infighting, enjoy the ride and start a lot of friendly :CK_brew: because this is going to be a fun season! :gun:

So you've seen Chapman or Woodson play more than the coaches? They've gotten us to this point, they see these guys every day. If they think Pohl is our best, he's our best. We just handled Pitt and we're questioning this?

Takes me back to people calling for Hirschman after Pohl came within feet of beating Michigan last year. Pohl had an interception (which was still a great play by the FS, probably would have been caught if he didnt get there) and probably two bad throws. He isn't Ben Roethlisberger, but I'm not sure if I can name any starting QB in the conference that is noticeable better than him.

There are four problems with our team that I see:

1) FG kicking - good luck on that getting fixed.

2)Running game- looks to be improved, so long as we stick with Hundley.

3) WRs catching the ball- our little guys, Bickley and Williams need to catch better. Even D'Orazio seems prone to a drop a game. It is nice to see MTB coming along this season, not only with improved hands, but with also making plays after he catches the ball. We desperately need a WR to do be able to make plays.

4) Secondary. I am pleased with Givens and very pleased with Scott stepping up yesterday. I even credit a couple of our sacks as "coverage sacks". Good job secondary containing Boyd. Bre Ford is also a ball hawk.
