Game #7 Ohio Bobcats

I think these are the keys to the game:

  1. Continue last week's trend of fewer penalties.
  2. Another solid special teams performance - thanks to Zach Paul for the punt that was downed on the 1 for the safety and Robert Stein's 46 yard field goal into the wind.
  3. Defense needs to continue to play well. OH hardly has a run game so the defense could be interesting to watch. IF the D comes out strong, it takes some of the pressure off of Woodson. We are due for a defensive score.
  4. Take what they give us offensively. I will not be surprised if they come ready to shut down the run, knowing Woodson is starting. That being said, there is enough film evidence showing that Woodson can be effective that they can't completely load up the line. Woodson might have to prove he can move the ball in the air before the run game is there for us, however.
  5. Protect the ball. Woodson has done a good job protecting the ball. He needs to continue to do that and the receivers, return guys, and running backs need to pay extra attention to taking care of the ball this week to help him out.

I believe Woodson can play a great game for us this week. Big games are not new to him, as the former Gateway HS QB. I agree that we should see better timing and execution form him this week after having more reps with the starters. He should have some opportunities for the long ball as I believe the Ohio secondary is pretty week. Neither Miami nor EMU had weak secondary units. This might be the easiest match up we have had since Howard in terms of the long ball. The receivers, however, have to make catches. Let's hope they come ready to play. I also think there is more of an opportunity for medium and short range passes as well as run plays to break for big plays due to their secondary.

I take it that the defense is going to score/be responsible for 21 points? Good Luck with that!

Well, it's prediction time. This week offers a unique prediction because one of the key elements for Zips failure in Athens will be in play this week. One could say it has become part of Zips tradition at this point. The jinxiness of ZipsWin! as it relates to losing IN Athens is well documented and will be in play this weekend. I see two scenarios in which this this jinxiness will impact the team. The second is how to lessen some of the jinxiness which will result in a Zips victory.

The documentation of ZipsWin!'s jinxiness is probably understood by the football team and basketball team at this point. I envision something like the Zips running out for the game all fired up. Upon arrival to the bench prior to start of the game, they notice ZipsWin! in the stands and all of their shoulders slump as the sense of doom washes over them. All confidence and momentum lost. If that happens this weekend, the score will be OU 20 - Akron 10.

How do we lessen the jinxiness? I only see one scenario where this could be the case and it involves a costume that will allow ZipsWin! to function in plain sight while shielding the team from his attendance. Specifically, a Mariachi costume complete with over sized mustache, large hat and very large acoustical bass guitar...or a violin, either will work. If ZipsWin! deploys the "Costume Shield", the Zips win 17-13. If not, prediction one will be accurate.

Before Frank Solich the Zips enjoyed a pretty decent stretch against OU in football. While I thoroughly enjoyed the “Zips Win!” jinxiness theory, I believe coaching has played a larger role J

Of course I would feel better with KP16 at the helm, but as long as the defense plays up to par and the running game is reasonably effective, I think TW13 will do enough to win the game. Obviously he needs to avoid turnovers (he hasn’t been picked off yet, but he has thrown a few that probably should have been). I’m a little concerned that OU moved the ball so well last week, primarily through the air. In the end, I like our chances mainly because the Zips have pretty well established a football identity this year and OU seems to be struggling with that (mostly due to injuries).

UA 24

OU 17

If you look at the MAC numbers, OU's running game is one of the league's worst. And the Zips are the league's best against the run.

OU's pass protection is among the league's worst, and we all know that the Zips D can bring the pressure.

I look for Woodson's start to force the Zips offense to do what they should have been doing all year long, and that's be "run-first." Enough with 5 wide-outs...our QB isn't that good, and out WR's aren't that good.

Woodson can't be throwing 30+ times. I think 25-29 throws is a good number.

If we pound the ball, I think we win going away. If we throw the ball 40 times, I think we lose.

Prediction: Run-oriented Zips win 26-15

Your Mariachi strategy is probably the best idea you have ever shared with us.

The only modification I suggest is that two friends in similar attire accompany him just in case they run into El Guapo.
