Well let me backup this confused conversation. We are not talking about clamoring for a replacement to a starting QB (per the NFL comparison), we are talking about what reserve QB would be best to take this team to wins the rest of the year should Pohl be injured. I'm not sure it's redshirt freshman Woodson based on what I've seen and I think senior ex-Colorado QB Nick Hirschman may be better based on his performance last year. One of the posters on this topic actually agreed with me on the Miami game thread when he said that Woodson might drag down our offense to below average if he has to replace Pohl yet decides to contradict himself here. The wildcard is Hirschman's knee. Now this may seem bizarre or expected from the unfortunate dimwits that follow shitsburgh, but I think it is worthy of discussion. Go Browns and Zips!

From what you've seen? How about let's trust what the coaches have seen. They seem to know what they're doing. If Hirschmann was better, he wouldn't be behind a Freshman on the depth chart.

ex-Colorado QB

There has been a lot of time between today and last year. Plenty of time for evaluation by the coaching staff. I trust Bowden to make a good decisions and he has made one as to the back-up. He has decided Woodson is the better and since I trust him, I'll go with that.

BTW, Colorado is one of the worst programs in the country. Basing any decision on a player by using his past at Colorado makes me want to run away.

zippy5 I believe this is a discussion forum to talk about coaches decisions, game play, etc...

Yes. I am discussing how you are wrong.

Sorry that was harsh. You stated Hirschmann is better, I disagreed based on the Coaches also obviously disagreeing. I see no reason to not trust them.

No probs zippy5 - we are all Akron fans - but just one more shot - What do Steelers fans and a bottle of beer have in common - they're both empty from the neck up. - kidding Go Zips!

Some have speculated it is a concussion. This is purely speculation at this point. IF it is, the link below shows what kind of treatment and evaluation he will be receiving.

The speculation is on target according to GT. TB will make a decision tomorrow.

“We will finalize that tomorrow,” Bowden said during his Tuesday news conference. “He got hit in the head. We don’t know. We held him out of practice today. I don’t want to go too soon because of the way those things are evaluated.”
“He banged his head on the turf, so we are very cautious on that just as all institutions are,” Bowden said. “We’re going to take two or three days of evaluation and at some point they usually say OK from here or not OK from here and we go from there.”

I was only speculating it might be a concussion based on all the circumstances I saw. It's good to be cautious whenever there's a blow to the head, even if there are no immediate signs of a concussion. It's also good how seriously they're taking this issue and not exposing a player to more potential head trauma by keeping them off the field for a few days until it's clear there are no symptoms of concussion.

Not the way I see it. Hirschman played very good in his limited time last year. I'm not sure about his knee or his desire to play, but as he filled in well for Pohl before I would have to think he may be be taking some snaps with the starters this week and we may see him in the Ohio game if Woodson falters and Pohl has to sit. I have to wonder about the decision of Woodson at #2. Is it because he is a red-shirt freshman and has an upside and could transfer out? From what I've seen, Hirschman may be our best option if Kyle is out (let's hope this discussion ends soon with some good news about Pohl's health).

I don't understand why there's a Hirschman-Woodson debate in the middle of the season. The two QBs battled each other all pre-season to see who would backup Pohl, and Woodson has been listed on the two-deep charts ever since the opening game against Howard. So far Woodson has rushed 11 times for 67 yards and passed 28-53 for 305 yards, 2 touchdowns and no interceptions or fumbles. These are all fine numbers for an inexperienced freshman backup QB. Coach Bowden selected Woodson over Hirschman for good reasons and Woodson has so far delivered.

Wasn't it supposed to be announced "tomorrow" yesterday?

Yep. I hope KP16 is fine. For the sake of game planning, I hope they don't "announce" until as late as possible. Like Bill Beli-cheat, I mean chick. Nobody works the system as good as he does...wink wink.

At first I thought they were ranked by team position, i.e. Mississippi State is #1, Eastern Michigan #128, etc. But it is by QB rating. They apparently had Pohl ranked #50 at the beginning of the season.

Perhaps the play of your QB is a strong indicator of the success of your team. Who knew?

2014 Miami (OH) fans, and maybe Dalton Williams' fan club, or Trent Dilfer's mom, would disagree.

You can go 1-11 with a really good QB. Or win a championship with a mediocre one.

But if you have a sucky one, you're screwed.

Woodson has been able to practice with the first team all week. I expect him to have better timing with the receivers and a game plan suited to his talents. I hope we run the ball more on first down and use the read option to use his running ability.

Can anyone explain to me why any team announces its starting lineup prior to any game? Wouldn't it be better to keep the opponent in the dark?

The age old "gentleman's agreement".
