Tree Treadwell Thread

So this happens everywhere then, we're the only ones to punish our players?

I just posted a link in OT to the most recent ESPN story about how transgressions by FSU football players are handled. Here's a link to the original New York Times story, which is even more detailed. Be sure to read the whole story, including the part about how the Tallahassee Police Department's public online database didn't show records of a hit-and-run by an FSU player because of a "technical glitch." Fortunately we don't see coverups like this at UA.

Im sorry but the whole disciplining are players more than other schools theory is a joke especially when our student athletes APR & GSR is abysmal. Bottom of the MAC.

You're talking academics when this discussion is based on off-court disciplinary issues and how the team/university handle them. Two entirely different topics.

Dre22Era, I've been known to misspell on occasion. :) But the important point here is that we read almost daily about college athletes committing all manner of mayhem and getting away with a slap on the wrist, yet we see Zips players consistently being hammered for similar or lesser offenses. I've seen no evidence that UA has low standards in that regard.

As frustrating as this situation is for Zips fans, it's something they've been through before. Actually, many times before. It's tough to say, but suspensions are becoming an issue in the men's basketball program.

Within the last three years, four players have been suspended either multiple times or for a long amount of time. Obviously everyone knows about Alex Abreu and what he did. Nick Harney was suspended more than once. Quincy Diggs lost a year to suspension for a reason nobody really knows. And finally Treadwell now, who has already been suspended once for beating up a DJ at a bar at two in the morning.

That's an alarming amount of players missing extended time.

Now, you could argue that Akron holds their players to a higher standard than most schools do. That's great, because no one player is more important than the team and legal dust-ups aren't swept under the rug.

But, when you look at what Akron players have been suspended for, it's a little bit of a different story. Obviously the Abreu situation is on another level, and we still aren't sure what happened with Diggs. Because this is now the second time that Treadwell has been in trouble, the first suspension didn't teach the lesson. It's something that needs to change, or the program will start to become known for these issues with the law.

The Abreu news went nationwide and was huge locally. Because of Treadwell's talent and Akron's standing within the college basketball world, this news will likely spread around the country too, especially when a reason comes out. You never want to become the school where all of the players get suspended (all is a relative term here). More suspensions create a stigma, and you don't want that on the recruiting trail.

This isn't just "violation of team rules" or "one game for missing class." To be suspended indefinitely, whatever it was had to be pretty bad. As an Akron alum and supporter of the team it's sad to see and I hope that Treadwell gets the help he needs for whatever he is going through. On the other hand, I worry about the Akron program and just how the buildup of suspensions and players leaving the team over the years makes the program look from the outside.

If this keeps happening, it's an issue that needs to seriously be dealt with.

I've seen plenty enough and when you combine that with the low academic standing. It does not look good from the outside in.

Before forming opinions about how strict we are vs other schools……why a player who was cleared from a concussion didn't play, etc, etc………….lets wait to hear the facts. I seriously doubt Coach Dambrot wants to lose his franchise player either. I would have to think there is a very good reason for this.

I love how the national people pick up these kinds of stories, and end up posting a bunch of incorrect information.

Diggs was suspended for reasons that we still don't know?

Tree "beat up" a guy in an Akron bar? Hitting someone isn't "beating them up".

I guess this is part of being AKRON. We beg to get good information about us to go national. Unfortunately, it's usually only the bad things that reach that point, and they seem very uninterested in exploring the correct details.

Of course everyone is concerned about the number of incidents over the last few years. How UA has dealt with the incidents is a separate issue. There have been no stories about how UA has covered up student-athlete incidents or let players off with a slap on the wrist because UA deals with these situations firmly and appropriately when they occur.

I defy the apologists to top this one.

Don't misunderstand me. Read my earlier post about how I feel about disciplining student/athletes. It's still wrong. Very wrong.

I just think this isn't the first time that information about the Akron Zips gets exaggerated or embellished, or simply reported incorrectly when there is a lack of information and/or no interest in gathering more information.

Like I said earlier, this is something to be proud of. And it is uncommon. Let others make whatever out of it that they want.

Maybe they arent mutually exclusive. Personally, I'm very disappointed by this particular player's actions. He is a team leader and should have been behaving as such. Need to focus blame on him where it belongs.

Sure, no one's arguing that. Isn't it alarming how many of these situations there have been though? Sadly usually from leaders of the team.

Nobody is stopping you from moving or rooting for other teams.

No kidding idiot, if I could, I would move. I do enjoy rooting for this garbage year in year out. So the drought since the 60's for a championship in major sports for anyone living here is fine? How about we just focus on soccer at UA. Hey, we were national champs and have been to the NCAA's where we actually win games there unlike basketball. All of you are lying if you haven't thought what it would have been like to grow up in lets say Alabama and have nice weather and a national sports team year over year. I choose to root for the teams I went to school at and where I live by birth, just happens to be one of the worst sports regions in recent history.
