Looks as if the worst case scenario is in effect with both Pat and BJ done for the season. How ironic that the last time the Zips were this depleted they were blown out of the NCAA tournament by VCU. This season Coach Smart will be better able to empathize with Coach Dambrot. Back on January 31 VCU was sailing along with a 17-3 record and a national ranking. That day their starting PG went down with a season-ending injury. Since then mighty VCU has gone 4-6, including an 82-55 blowout by Davidson tonight. I'll bet the two good coaching friends will be spending more time on the phone together than usual discussing what it feels like to deal with adversity.

I heard Dambrot picked up the phone, said "Karma is a bitch," and hung up.

Sticking to the opinion that I've held all season that Buffalo is the team to beat. I sure wouldn't bet on it though.

Any other opinions or predictions out there?

I think everyone is really overlooking how good Central Michigan is, the Zips were pretty lucky to hold on and beat them and they've beaten both Buffalo and Toledo twice. I would be OK with the Chipps winning it all since the odds are really long for the Zips.

Worst case scenario for the Zips is that neither Pat nor BJ play another game. That would leave the following rotation:

Big Dog

Kwan

Aaron

Jake

Reggie

Deji

Nyles

Antino

Malcolm

Those who wanted to see Kwan in the low post would likely get their chance if he becomes Big Dog's backup. And those who wanted to see Deji play more minutes would probably also get their chance to see how effective he can be playing longer minutes.

I really like watching Deji play but my concern with him has always been how he seems to pick up fouls quickly and in bunches. The Zips cannot afford that now at all. Deji needs to play as he is capable without the fouling.

I don't know why Coach Smart would be upset with the Davidson coach, who began taking all of his starters out with about 2 minutes left and a precarious 77-54 lead. ;)

You called it -- 5 personals in 17 minutes.

Meh, I'd rather get OU over with at our house than see them in the 2nd round at the Q

I agree that I'd rather play OU at home rather than a neutral court, but this assumes that both OU and Akron win on Monday. OU is 1-10 on the road and is a completely different team vs when they play at home.

I'm worried about NIU. NIU is just one of those teams that plays well against us and I doubt we'll be shooting the 3 at the high percentage we did against K.e.nt, which kept us in the game.

Well yeah, OU loses in a perfect world and we don't see them at all.

I worry about how many threes we will have to make to win. The Zips have become very one dimensional. Fouls + Three point attempts = 2015 Zips.

I'd love to see the Zips win Monday and then advance to face WMU in Cleveland. I see that as the most likely way to win 20 games.

GJGood gets his wish. But be careful what you wish for. WMU is a better team now than they were when the Zips beat them in Kalamazoo without their starting PG, and now it's the Zips who are short-handed. David Brown, who went off for 34 points tonight (8-14 3-pointers) to sink OU, will be a handful at the Q.

BGSU beat BSU and, in the battle of defensive specialists, EMU beat MU by 1 in OT to set up the other quarterfinal game.

Told you so.

I feel like WMU is the better matchup for us. I feel like the very athletic teams will cause us the most problem right now, and they aren't that kind of team. I also feel like I know what I'm getting with WMU. They should be easier to game-plan against. OU is far more unpredictable. And we can certainly count on far less fan support for WMU on a Wednesday night in Cleveland.
