Zips at Miami 3-3-15

A big game for the Zips:

Can we get a top 4 seed?

Can we maintain our string of 20 win seasons?

Can we get a road win?

KD indicated in his post game show that he has given the keys of this team to Antino Jackson. He liked the way he played in the Ohio game and really like how he has improved his defense. Antino has certainly improved greatly over the course of the season. If he gets really good, it improves the chances of the Zips winning immensely.

In the Ohio game we were successful because we finally shot the 3 ball well in the second half.

We also got 19 points from our wing players, Kretzer and McAdams

We had a 10 point or more lead in the final 5 minutes and the game did not come down to the final minutes.

It will be interesting to see if KD starts the twin towers again. They had difficulty handling the press last time we played Miami. We need to keep the turnovers down. Early in the season that was a problem with Antino but he seems to be playing much better under control. The best way to break a press is quick passing and quick transition points. Hopefully we have learned from our defeat at their hands and will play a better game. Go Zips!

I'd maybe consider shifting into a 1-3-1 zone at times against this team? Force Washington to pass the ball. Maybe trap him and force their offense to make some awkward passes? We have the size to defend the post. Try to just eliminate the dribble drive. That seemed to be the back breaker last game.

On offense I would just attempt to maul them with 34 and 23. Make them double and triple those guys. They are both very capable scorers. Force the issue. The problem was getting the ball inside last game. They trapped up top a ton. Make them collapse and double down on those guys. If not, we might just have to give them a dose of their own medicine. Go small, spread them out and drive them. We're gonna take our share of jumpers, at least that might help to open up some better looks.

Crucially important to keep up the 20 win streak and winning tradition. We got hit in the mouth... time to show them what getting hit back feels like.

Let's temper our excitement a bit... OU has lost 6 in a row, and 6 of their 9 wins are against Marietta College, Appalachian St, Ark Pine Bluff, Alcorn St, Ball St and of course Akron.... I am glad that Kretzer and Reggie showed something

An otherwise tepid Miami team had a brief, late-season, 4-game MAC win streak, beating OU, BGSU, Zips and Can't. Sweaters beat BGSU and the Zips back-to-back on the road, a pretty impressive feat. But the Zips should take heart from the fact that the Sweaters were just beaten at home by the same BGSU team MU had beaten on the road. At the JAR against MU, the Zips didn't handle the pressure defense well in regulation and then played even worse in OT after Noah left the game. The Zips now have some experience with Antino running the show as well as experience dealing with MU's pressure D. Expect different looks in this game, better execution and an underdog Zips team acting like junkyard dogs in pursuit of that elusive top 4 MAC tournament seed.

Zips favored by three.

The RedHawks are 9-7 at home, 4-4 against MAC opponents.

Three players are scoring in double figures, including Eric Washington (14.7 ppg), Geovonie McKnight (10.9 ppg) and Will Sullivan (10.5 ppg). Sullivan is the team's leading rebounder (4.6 rpg).

A victory would snap a two-game losing streak for the Zips against the RedHawks.

Akron is 17-0 this season when leading with 5:00 to go in a game.

An Akron win would keep the Zips in the running for one of the top four seeds in next week's MAC Tournament.

Hmm. That's interesting considering that there's a general thought out there that we aren't closing games.

Maybe that deserves a closer look. Is it possible that we are just not closing out victories in which we have already expended resources to come back from behind?

The stats on the GoZips.com can be misleading. During our 4 game losing streak we had leads with less than 5 minutes remaining in the Miami and Buffalo game. We were tied twice in the Toledo game under 5 minutes. We did not finish close games during our losing streak in 3 of our 4 losses.

Gozips. com also indicates that we are 2nd in the MAC and 11th nationally in made 3 pointers. Reading that stat would make you believe that we are a great 3 point shooting team.

However, we are 3rd in the nation taking 3 points shots but ranked 160th in the nation in 3 point made percentage. None of our guys are even close to being in the top 50 for 3 point percentage. We are at best "average" in shooting the 3 ball even though it seems to be the emphasis of our offense.

I am really hoping Kretzer and McAdams have permanently awakened from their slumber. I think that's a key to any success going forward this season.

As for the 1-3-1, it seems like it was used successfully a couple of times last year, but KD seems to hate zones. I like mixing in a zone occasionally to mix things up and give teams another look that they may not be familiar with or prepared to handle.

Miami offers stream for $10.95 (monthly access). Nothing on the "MAC digital network" and we're the only ones NOT on ESPN3. Wish it wasn't a TTuesday, I would've made the trip!

Just noticed that. I wonder what the deal is there. I'm sure not going to pay for what will probably be at best a mediocre at best feed from Oxford. I think they'd get more takers for $3-5.

I am starting to think we are snakebit.

First Tree, then Robo, now Pat could be out. And don't forget AA

This is NOT good.

I get that pessimism is your thing, but we've scored 30% more than our opponent that just beat us at the JAR. Could definitely be worse.
