Zips vs. WMU 3-11-15 (MAC Tourney Rnd 2)

Recommended Posts

Skip, I thought you would have commented on WMU having only 1 assist for the whole game. :) But you're right that it was a gem of a defensive performance. The start to the second half was crazy with Antino going wild and turning the ball over on the Zips' first 3 possessions and going to the bench, then the Zips scoring just 3 points in the first 7 minutes. The ice was finally broken with a string of 3s.

WOW!! Can't believe I didn't notice that. Their poor shooting certainly limits assists. But, that's an unbelievable number!

They just couldn't execute anything against us. They finally tried to utilize the Miami strategy and just started letting their quick lanky guard just go one-on-one to the basket.

Offensively, we did not look very smooth and our offense did not produce like it did at Can't and against Northern Illinois. Our defense was great. Kwan played an outstanding defensive game and had some key rebounds. He was holding the ball at the end of the game and the Western Michigan player kept reaching in attempting to get the ball. Clearly, a classless move. Kwan kept his cool until the guy would not stop. Bad ending to the game and the players did not shake hands.

Weird stat of the night. We only scored 5 two point baskets. Those four 3 point baskets in a row won the game.

Bad news is that KD did not use Arron Jackson and almost all of our guys played between 25 and 30 minutes. I hope they have something in the tank for Can't.

Looking forward to Can't but will need to play better offensively than tonight. Go Zips!!

Western blows.

I agree. Sitting so close made me realize how slow they play. David Brown is wrong, a (depleted) Zips team is better than his ex team.

BTW, I logged into ESPN3 at the arena last night with a TWC login and the game was NOT blacked out. A friend texted me during the the game that DirecTV login worked too. Stream away tonight if you "can't" make it.

Agree, crappy move by the WMU player. With the game over why are you trying to take the ball? Also a crappy move by Kwan to wave and mouth "bye bye" to the WMU players. Both players were in the wrong.

Did you get there early enough to watch the EMU/BGSU game? If you did, I feel bad for you. They both looked as bad as or worse than WMU, but since they played each other and not a better team, the score created the illusion of a good game.

Forgot to write about this: I sent a Tweet to ESPN and they actually responded and let me know that twc doesn't have the same exclusive rights on the tournament because of ESPN's sponsorship at the Q. ALL TOURNAMENT GAMES will be available via WatchESPN and ESPN3, none subject to blackout. :)

If by "a win tonight" you mean "a loss on Saturday," you would be correct.

I don't see any plausible way that the Zips make the NIT. Its all (NCAA) or nothing (CIT/CBI). If we win the next two and lose saturday, our RPI is still in the triple digit range.

That probably punched our ticket to a lesser tournament. A win tonight may cement an NIT bid (?)

The NIT may still be too much to ask. That committee is notorious for taking barely .500 power schools over very good mid-majors plus the at-large field shrinks every time a one bid league regular season conference champion loses in their conference tourney thus claiming an auto-bid in the 32 team field.

What I am not sure of is if there is a clear line between or prevailing thought of which would be preferred between the CBI and the CiT. I would think last night's win would go a long way toward an invite to one of those two events if the Zips just don't go ahead and win the NCAA berth.

The article below indicates that WMU (who also has 20 wins and Akron defeated three times) has been contacted by the CiT and that Bowling Green (who Akron defeated twice) has already accepted a CiT bid.

I thought the automatic bid for the NIT went to the regular season conference champion if they don't win the tournament. So wouldn't CMU go if they don't win the tourney regardless of who wins?

Bingo. Only route to the NIT is at-large, and that's not happening. Zips will play postseason, but its either the Big Dance or the tiny polka.

Kwan was right to be annoyed by the uncalled-for poking at the ball by the WMU player. It's OK to be annoyed, but you have to be able to manage your emotions in those circumstances. I love the level of emotion that helps drive both Kwan and Antino to perform at a high level, which reminds me of Q's game. But they both need to learn to avoid overreacting to provocations and taunts from opposing teams. Just focus on your game and don't get suckered into doing something that ends up hurting your team with a technical. It's all about winning the game, not winning peeing matches with opposing players.

Is a peeing match anything like a pissing contest?

Reminds me of the time I was taking a sociology class at UA. The prof was from abroad and obviously not completely fluent in American idioms because one day she referred to the "righteous buck" over and over again. Many of us were looking at each other puzzled and after about the 10th mention, a brave soul finally asked just what this righteous buck was. As she explained, we realized she meant

When that WMU player came over and slapped at the ball, I said "he's asking to get punched". That move was so meaningless in terms of the game's outcome. It was the reaction of a loser wanting to be a d*ck. In my opinion, Kwan showed GREAT restraint. But, waving goodbye after the incident was already over proved nothing either.
