2015 Bowl Thread

My God. Leave it to some fans on here to find a way to bitch about going to a bowl game against a winnable opponent. Is the location preferable? No. Is the opponent preferable? No. Who gives a damn?! Go out there and win the thing. I'll see anyone else who goes there. It will probably be around a $500 round trip flight. Game tickets should be cheap and lodging shouldn't be bad. It's just money. More than worth the experience. Go Zips!

The last time OU played in this bowl there were 28k in attendance. The bowl has averaged well over 20k attendance since it's inception. And the capacity is only 37k, so barring a blizzard it will be a great environment. And a profitable bowl.

I think it will be the coolest. I don't think I will be able to attend, but so what. Congrats to the Zips on playing in a 2015 bowl!

Just a hop, skip, and connecting flight a little over 600 miles almost due north to Boise from Vegas ...

12/21 Las Vegas - Akron vs UCSB (South Point Classic; men's bball)

12/22 Boise - Akron vs Utah State (Potato Bowl)

12/23 Las Vegas - Akron vs Iona (South Point Classic)

Get lucky in Vegas and make it an All-Akron 3-day trip out west!

Congrats Zips! 7 wins, a bowl game, on ESPN, just before Christmas. I know all about complaining and this is nothing to complain about. The program is headed in the right direction and I can't wait to see the game, although probably on DVR. I think that the crowd will be large simply because Boise has become a good college football town and that'll be the only prime event happening within hundreds of miles that day. Boom! Go Zips!

We put up 47 points and earned a 'W' on crappy turf once this year. Wash, rinse, repeat.

Utah State is 2-9 all-time on Smurf Turf, 1-2 in the Potato Bowl.

This team needed to go bowling and we're doing just that. Congrats Zips!

Yeah, first winning season in 10 years and we should turn down the bowl because of location and payout. That's a great mentality.

THE AKRON ZIPS ARE GOING BOWLING.

Quit bitching and enjoy it.

I agree, I am getting in the mood right now :gun::gun::gun::gun:

I am not complaining about anything about where the Zips are going or who they are playing. I love the fact that they are going bowling.

My only beef is the payout. Doesn't it make sense that 5-7 teams that would normally be ineligible should be delegated to the lowest payout bowls by rule? I don't care about conference affiliations, these teams were NOT eligible. I don't know who makes the rules on such things but I do think there should be a writing campaign started to suggest that losing teams granted eligibility simply because of vacancies should go to the lowest payout bowls. It just makes sense.

I would hope that after this season the NCAA would build out some more fair rules for failure to get 6-6 teams, but I am not holding my breath. Ultimately, there is very little set up to protect or help group of 5 teams at the present.

I really hope my source is right, it would be the best possible scenario for the Zips.

Since Zips fans don't have much experience with bowl games, and how the selection process works, I would love to see an article written about it. The article should begin on Monday and continue through the week until the Zips know the official announcement on Sunday. It would have all the rumors and inner workings of how the offer came about in the piece. There were so many projections, I'm sure at the time it seemed possible, then something changed, and another scenario falls into place. This might require some research and work, but I think it could be informative, and create more interest for the bowl game. Oh well, maybe next year.

I am all for winning more games, but going to the very low end bowls seems like bad business for cash strapped programs.

....maybe they drop another sport?

"At the 2009 Humanitarian Bowl in Boise, Bowling Green received 4,000 tickets. It sold 77 — 76 for $40 and one for $15. The athletic department and university lost a combined $154,000 after adding up expenses for the team, band, and athletic department staffers.

Toledo, meanwhile, sold about 300 tickets for last December’s Potato Bowl. It received $225,000 for the 2011 Military Bowl in Washington and $475,000 last year, but spent $518,000 and $699,000, respectively, according to school records"

$154,000 to have your program marketed on a national scale for a couple weeks seems to be a nice deal.

How much did UA spend on t-shirts for a single Cavs game?

Doesn't the school get a payout from the league from all the other conference bowls too? Wouldn't we need to factor in all bowl-season money into the equation before we decide if it's good or not? I remember this article from earlier in the year pointing out that the MAC had a net gain of some $12-million over the previous season. HustleBelt mentioned it here.

If this is true, that roughly each MAC team is making almost $800,000 more because of the existence of the CFB Playoff; doesn't it make more sense to be one of the teams in the bowl, than not?
