zippy5
Hate this. Coaches spend months recruiting then bolt the day after the kids they recruit sign.
LZIp
Well shit. He'll be looking for a job next year after Hazell finally gets canned. I've harped on this before, but the MAC really needs to find a way to make coaching salaries at least competitive with other G5 conferences. In this case, the guy risks job security and stability for a paycheck when he will most likely looking for another job next season. Captain Kangaroo
I can't believe Bowden saw this one coming. About 26 hours ago he was in front of a crowd of fans extolling Funk's virtues. TB has enough connections that I'm sure he'll find a solid replacement soon. But it sucks. Dr Z
Good luck to coach Funk. Anxious to see who comes in to add energy to the offensive line group!

Captain Kangaroo
Here is the first guy I call for an interview His lines were always solid under Lee Owens. He's at a lower-division school right now, and I'm sure wouldn't mind a bump in pay.His son Clayton is walking on for the Zips this spring. Akron guy. Older - wouldn't use UA as a springboard. And he was a lot of fun to hang with at the old Zips Golf Outings. Interview a couple others. If someone's better, great. But give this guy a look. I'll disagree with the calculation. If your wife dies suddenly at 43 years old, you have years to find wife #2. When your OL Coach passes away unexpectedly, you have weeks to find your next Coach. Bowden found 2 guys that ascended to P5 schools. I wouldn't call thise strike outs. We'll see if he tweaks his strategy this time around. I guess it's great that there are 17 year olds stuck with a college and the coach that recruited them isn't there. I just think it's really sleazy how you see so many moves in the coaching world today and kids can't change their minds.

But hopefully the kids chose the Zips because of the academics, campus, facilities, Bowden, etc. rather than Funk. Bowden will soon acquire a solid line coach. I have no concern on that hire. LoyalZIP
This really sucks. The o line will now undergo a complete overhaul, not returning any its starters or the coach. Hopefully the line can gel more quickly in 2016 than it did in 2015 but it will be much harder without the same coach and any returning starters. The offensive line will decide whether we make an attempt to take the next step as a program or not. But really, Akron just won a dadgum bowl game. As far as I'm concerned, anything is possible right now.

Play improved dramatically throughout the season. Hopefully, we find a good catch and continue to improve.
kreed5120
Every program loses assistants to higher paying jobs. It's a small price to pay for on the field success.

I'd love to see what a coach could do with this line with more than a year. RIP Tank.
ZachTheZip
It makes sense for him to leave now, though. Most of the line graduated, which creates a natural transition period, and it also gives the new coach a fresh group of players to work with and implement his own coaching style and philosophy. If he was going to leave, now would be the time that hurts the program least (although keeping him would obviously be best for Akron).Thankfully, we have playmakers that can stretch the field, which takes some pressure off the line for passing plays. Hopefully our RBs and FBs are up to the task.
