No question that Ball is head and shoulders above anybody else the Zips have available at RB,IF HEALTHY! The little we saw of him last season indicated he was too big and too fast for most defenses to handle consistently. Now,Bowden/Milwee have to adjust their play calling to take advantage of that strength on offense. That might be the biggest question given what we have seen from this duo in the past. Its not a sin to be run happy when it works.

Agreed.  He's such an amazing physical specimen.

Btw, current East HS senior RB & Davanier Floyd was at the game today.  He's given a verbal commitment to the Zips.  Dude walked by me and man, he is just absolutely stacked.  He runs a 4.44 40 & is the current City Series 100 meter champ.  He'd be our #2 back today if he were on the team. (Well, maybe #3 when Deltron Sands gets healthy.)

If we are counting on Milwee to be creative and use what team can give we are in deep, deep trouble. There is little hope he can be the OC we need. I pray Bowden steps in and calls the plays and Milwee "tries" to develop QB's. If not we will be lucky to win 5 games.

I am hoping this is a breakout year for the OL. I actually think having a back who can be consistently successful and create a little of his own success could take pressure of tge OL and QB and give tgem a chance to develop. We have a lot if "if's", though. If Ball is healthy, if the OK continuea to progress, if Tommy is healthy and back to form, and if we have receivers who can step up. It was rare that Jerome and Jojo couldn't co.e up with a big play when we needed them to, we need a couple if guys who want the ball and catches as badly as Jojo did.

In addition to the "ifs" you mention there are many more such as if we find a QB, if the new LB's work out, if the DL can be rebuilt, if a legitimate TE shows, if Milwee can use what the O talent gives him effectively (my favorite which I thoroughly doubt), etc. A respected, experienced football coach once told me that when faced with a lot of "ifs" in the pre-season you can only count on 50% of them, at best, working out. The rest will be problem areas. This is realistic and I don't feel we can reasonably expect all our "ifs" to be solved. I wish it was otherwise. Every Fall hope springs eternal.

This is fair.  I just hope that Ball does something worthwhile for us this year, with all of the time that people have invested talking about him for the last few years.  In the 20 carries we saw last year, he runs hard.  If he can return and sustain his health this year, and beat up some MAC defenses for 10 carries or so a game, I think it could really help the wide open passing game that Terry loves so much.

If he's healthy and only getting ten carries a game we are in trouble

It's a passing-focused offense, and always will be as long as this coach is here :D

I guess I've just always stayed with those on the "wait and see" side of this issue as I've been hearing a few people declare this guy as the solution to our offensive woes, when he's touched the ball only a couple dozen times in the last 5 years since high school.

I'm not sure which issue you are commenting on here.  We can certainly debate about what to expect from Ball, but there isn't a debate about Terry's offensive philosophy.

Sure there is if you think his philosophy is to run 10 times a game. When we aren't down by 97, we run more. See the Marshall box score for reference.

Spot on. Contrast this pre-season to last. Last season there was a reasonable expectation that the QB situation had at least stabilized. They had two WR's who were reasonably expected to make plays. The O-line was at least acceptable. The running game appeared to be solid(until Ball got hurt). The defense looked solid in the front seven.

This pre-season there is no proven QB. The o-line 'might' be solid. The WR's at this point don't compare favorably with Natson and Lane. The run game might be solid if Ball is healthy. The d-line? The linebackers, possibly. The secondary might actually be a strength for what thats worth. Who knows how many 'ifs' will become positives.

We've finished something between 6-9th place in the MAC the past 4 years. There is nothing that I've seen so far that makes me feel this team is any different. It's a long summer and much can change between now and August, but we're going to need numerous players taking monumental strides between now and the start of MAC play if we hope to contend in the MAC.

Unfortunately I couldn't agree more. We have more "ifs" than the past three seasons and it is the height of folly to think they will all work themselves out before the season starts. The coaches know this. That is why they have been very low keyed and promised little. They know the team and staff, as currently constituted, can't deliver the season we want. The lack of hype for this team speaks volumes.
